  • Cost-effective functional phosphor nanoparticles are prepared by introducing low-cost $SiO_2$ spheres to rare-earth phosphor ($YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$, $YVO_4:Er^{3+}$, and $YVO_4:Nd^{3+}$) shells using a sol-gel synthetic method. These functional nanoparticles are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and general photoluminescence spectra. The $SiO_2$ sphere occupying the interior of the conventional phosphor is advantageous in significantly reducing the cost of expensive rare-earth phosphor nanoparticles. The sol-gel process facilitates the core-shell structure formation; the rare-earth shell phosphor has strong interactions with chelating agents on the surfaces of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles and thus forms layers of several nanometers in thickness. The photoluminescence wavelength is simply tuned by replacing the active materials of $Eu^{3+}$, $Er^{3+}$, and $Nd^{3+}$. Moreover, the photoluminescent properties of the core-shell nanoparticles can be optimized by manipulating the specific contents of active materials in the phosphors. Our simple approach substitutes low-cost $SiO_2$ for expensive rare-earth-based phosphor materials to realize cost-effective phosphor nanoparticles for various applications.

  • The transition of europium-doped gadolinium oxide phosphor to gadolinium borate phosphor with the concentration of boron in the spray pyrolysis was investigated. The particles prepared from spray solution below 10 wt% boric acid of prepared phosphor had crystal structure of $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor, in which the crystallinity of the particles decreased with increasing the boron concentration. A single phase $GdBO_3:Eu$ phosphor particles were prepared from spray solution above 50 wt% boric acid of prepared phosphor. The phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with 20 wt% boric acid of prepared phosphor had no XRD peaks of $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ and $GdBO_3:Eu$ Therefore the phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with 20 wt% boric acid of prepared phosphor had the lowest photoluminescence intensity under ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet. $GdBO_3:Eu$ and $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles prepared from spray solutions with proper concentrations of boric acid had good photoluminescence intensity under vacuum ultraviolet. The morphology of the phosphor particles were strongly affected by the concentrations of boric acid added into spray solution.

  • [ $Y_{2}O_{2}S:Eu$ ], a red phosphor, coated with silica nanoparticles or nanocomposites composed of silica nanoparticles and polymeric materials such as PMMA and PVP was prepared via sol-gel process. Samples were prepared from four different methods coded P1, P2, P3, and P4. P1 includes a conventional sol-gel process and a dip-coating method while P2 has the same procedure with P1 except that nanocomposites containing both silica nanoparticles and polymer prepared by sol-gel process were used as coating materials. In P3 method, phosphors were dispersed in a solution containing silica precursor, i.e., TEOS and then polymerization was performed to coat onto the phosphors surface while P4 followed the same procedure with P3 except that a solution containing both TEOS and organic monomer were used in preparing coating materials. Among various coating methods examined in this study, uniform coating of phosphor could be achieved by using method P4, i.e., phosphor surface coating in a solution containing hydrophobic monomer and TEOS. Furthermore, $Y_{2}O_{2}S:Eu$ red phosphor coated with nanocomposite composed of PMMA matrix and silica nanoparticles exhibited enhanced PL intensity and long-term stability.

  • A novel blue emitting $Ca_{1-x}Mg_2Si_3O_9:Eu_x$ phosphor was synthesized by the solid state reaction and its photoluminescence properties were optimized by controlling concentration of the activator contents and substituting concentration of Ca ion by Sr ion. The photoluminescence (PL) showed that this phosphor is efficiently excited by ultraviolet (UV)-visible light in the wavelength range from 200 to 410 nm. Also this phosphor emits intensely blue light with a broad peak at around 450 nm.

  • [ $BaMgAl_{10}O_{19}:Mn^{2+}$ ](BAM:Mn) phosphor particles with spherical shape were prepared by spray pyrolysis from colloidal solution with silica. The phosphor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous solution had irregular morphology after high temperature post-treatment. On the other hand, the phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with colloidal silica had spherical shape after post-treatment. Colloidal silica used as additive improved the spherical shape and filled morphology of the precursor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis. The precursor particles with filled structure produced the BAM:Mn phosphor particles with spherical shape and non-aggregation characteristics after post-treatment at $1400^{\circ}C$ under reducing atmosphere. The phosphor particles prepared from colloidal solutions formed the crystal structure of BAM:Mn phosphor irrespective of the silica contents. The BAM:Mn phosphor particles prepared from aqueous and colloidal solutions had similar photoluminescence intensities under vacuum ultraviolet.

  • We report the techniques to obtain the high uniformity of the phosphor film thickness in the cold cathode fluorescent lamps, which are widely used as a back-light for the liquid crystal display. The thickness variation of the phosphor layer was sensitive to blowing conditions. The optimum conditions were obtained at flow rate of 15 sccm for 30 min at 40 $^{\circ}C$. The optimum and uniform thickness of a phosphor layer gives good luminous output.

  • $Tb^{3+}-activated$ green-emitting $(Y,Gd)Ga_3(BO_3)_4$ phosphor has been investigated. The main absorption was in the $120{\sim}238$ nm and exhibited a green emission with the 545 nm and several peaks due to inner shell transition of $Tb^{3+}$ ion. With the optimized $Tb^{3+}$ concentrations, the maximum emission brightness was 90% of the $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor.

  • The thiogallate phosphors which are well known for a long time as phosphor materials for CRT or EL device were reported. Those have high luminescent properties at long-wavelength region. Among those phosphors, the samples with divalent europium doped CaGa2S4 were prepared by a simple process under the reduction atmosphere $(5%\;H_2/\;95%\;N_2)$ without toxic gas such as H2S or CS2. The prepared phosphor shows a higher luminescent efficiency (about 120%) than that of $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor. Consequently, this phosphor is possible to be applicable to white LED lamp because of the high luminescent efficiency.

  • A magnesium thiogallate phosphor doped with europium was prepared by solid-state method. This phosphor has green emission near 535 nm due to the allowed transition from $4f^65d$ at an excitation state $(T_{2g})$ to $4f^7 (^8S_{7/2}) at a ground state of $Eu^{2+}$ ion. This phosphor shows a wide excitation spectrum from ultra violet (300 nm) to bluish green (515 nm).
