  • In this paper, Korean spoken continuous digits are ercognized using DHMM(Dynamic Hidden Markov Model) and lexical analysis to provide the base of developing voice dialing system. After segmentation by phoneme unit, it is recognized. This system can be divided into the segmentation section, the design of standard speech section, the recognition section, and the lexical analysis section. In the segmentation section, it is segmented using the ZCR, O order LPC cepstrum, and Ai, parameter of voice speech dectaction, which is changed according to time. In the standard speech design section, 19 phonemes or syllables are trained by DHMM and designed as a standard speech. In the recognition section, phomeme stream are recognized by the Viterbi algorithm. In the lexical decoder section, finally recognized continuous digits are outputed. This experiment shiwed the recognition rate of 85.1% using data spoken 7 times of 21 classes of 7 continuous digits which are combinated all of the occurence, spoken by 10 man.

  • This paper proposes a method of player event retrieval using combination of two functions: detection of player name in speech information and detection of sound event from audio information in golf videos. The system consists of indexing module and retrieval module. At the indexing time audio segmentation and noise reduction are applied to audio stream demultiplexed from the golf videos. The noise-reduced speech is then fed into speech recognizer, which outputs spoken descriptors. The player name and sound event are indexed by the spoken descriptors. At search time, text query is converted into phoneme sequences. The lists of each query term are retrieved through a description matcher to identify full and partial phrase hits. For the retrieval of the player name, this paper compares the results of word-based, phoneme-based, and hybrid approach.

  • This is the study on recognition units and segmentation of phonemes. In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use the segment than the syllable or the word as the recognition unit. In this paper, we study on the proper recognition units and segmentation of phonemes for Korean speech recognition. For experiments, we use the speech toolkit of OGI in U.S.A. The result shows that the recognition rate of the case in which the diphthong is established as a single unit is superior to that of the case in which the diphthong is established as two units, i.e. a glide plus a vowel. And recognizer using manually-aligned training data is a little superior to that using automatically-aligned training data. Also, the recognition rate of the case in which the bipbone is used as the recognition unit is better than that of the case in which the mono-Phoneme is used.

  • A method for the automatic segmentation of speech signals is described. The method is dedicated to the construction of a large database for a Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesis system. The main issue of the work involves the refinement of an initial estimation of phone boundaries which are provided by an alignment, based on a Hidden Market Model(HMM). Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) was used as a phone boundary detector. To increase the performance of segmentation, a technique which individually trains an MLP according to phonetic transition is proposed. The optimum partitioning of the entire phonetic transition space is constructed from the standpoint of minimizing the overall deviation from hand labelling positions. With single speaker stimuli, the experimental results showed that more than 95% of all phone boundaries have a boundary deviation from the reference position smaller than 20 ms, and the refinement of the boundaries reduces the root mean square error by about 25%.

  • This paper aims to analyze pronunciation variations of loanwords produced by Korean and improve the performance of pronunciation modeling of loanwords in Korean by using syllable-based segmentation and phonological knowledge. The loanword text corpus used for our experiment consists of 14.5k words extracted from the frequently used words in set-top box, music, and point-of-interest (POI) domains. At first, pronunciations of loanwords in Korean are obtained by manual transcriptions, which are used as target pronunciations. The target pronunciations are compared with the standard pronunciation using confusion matrices for analysis of pronunciation variation patterns of loanwords. Based on the confusion matrices, three salient pronunciation variations of loanwords are identified such as tensification of fricative [s] and derounding of rounded vowel [ɥi] and [$w{\varepsilon}$]. In addition, a syllable-based segmentation method considering phonological knowledge is proposed for loanword pronunciation modeling. Performance of the baseline and the proposed method is measured using phone error rate (PER)/word error rate (WER) and F-score at various context spans. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the baseline. We also observe that performance degrades when training and test sets come from different domains, which implies that loanword pronunciations are influenced by data domains. It is noteworthy that pronunciation modeling for loanwords is enhanced by reflecting phonological knowledge. The loanword pronunciation modeling in Korean proposed in this paper can be used for automatic speech recognition of application interface such as navigation systems and set-top boxes and for computer-assisted pronunciation training for Korean learners of English.

  • In order to produce a high quality (intelligibility and naturalness) synthesized speech, it is very important to get an accurate grapheme-to-phoneme conversion and prosody model. In this paper, we analyzed Chinese texts using a segmentation, POS tagging and unknown word recognition. We present a grapheme-to-phoneme conversion using a dictionary-based and rule-based method. We constructed a prosody model using a probabilistic method and a decision tree-based error correction method. According to the result from the above analysis, we can successfully select and concatenate exact synthesis unit of syllables from the Chinese Synthesis DB.

  • The accuracy rate of P2G (Phoneme-to-Grapheme) is one of the important factors determining the quality of unlimited voice recognition (VR) systems. Few studies were, however, conducted to reduce ambiguities of a phoneme string which can be segmented into a variety of different linguistic units (i.e. morphemes, words, eo-jeols), thus be transformed into more than one grapheme string. This paper is a preliminary research for building a large knowledge base of those homonymic & heterographic units(HHUs), which will provide unlimited Korean VR systems with more accurate P2G information. This paper analyzes 2 main factors generating HHUs: (1) boundary determination of the prosodic unit; (2) its segmentation into linguistic units. In this paper, linguistic characteristics determining variable boundaries of a prosodic unit are investigated, and the ambiguity types of HHUs are classified in accordance with their morphological and syntactic structures as well as with the phonological rules governing them.

  • In this paper, study and experiments are performed for finding recognition unit fit which can be used in large vocabulary recognition system. Specifically, a phoneme that is currently used as recognition unit and a syllable in which Korean is well characterized are selected. From comparisons of recognition experiments, the study is performed whether a syllable can be considered as recognition unit of Korean recognition system. For report of an objective result of the comparison experiment, we collected speech data of a male speaker and processed them by hand-segmentation for phoneme boundary and labeling to construct speech database. And for training and recognition based on HMM, we used HTK (HMM Tool Kit) 2.0 of commercial tool from Entropic Co. to experiment in same condition. We applied two HMM model topologies, 3 emitting state of 5 state and 6 emitting state of 8 state, in Continuous HMM on training of each recognition unit. We also used 3 sets of PBW (Phonetically Balanced Words) and 1 set of POW(Phonetically Optimized Words) for training and another 1 set of PBW for recognition, that is "Speaker Dependent Medium Vocabulary Size Recognition." Experiments result reports that recognition rate is 95.65% in phoneme unit, 94.41% in syllable unit and decoding time of recognition in syllable unit is faster by 25% than in phoneme.

  • In this paper, we have constructed phoneme discriminant filters [PDF] according to the linear discriminant function. These discriminant filters do not follow the heuristic rules by the experts but the mathematical methods in iterative learning. Proposed system. is based on the piecewise linear classifier and error correction learning method. The segmentation of speech and the classification of phoneme are carried out simutaneously by the PDF. Because each of them operates independently, some speech intervals may have multiple outputs. Therefore, we introduce the unified coefficients by the output unification process. But sometimes the output has a region which shows no response, or insensitive. So we propose time windows and median filters to remove such problems. We have trained this system with the 549 monosyllables uttered 3 times by 3 male speakers. After we detect the endpoint of speech signal using threshold value and zero crossing rate, the vowels and consonants are separated by the PDF, and then selected phoneme passes through the following PDF. Finally this system unifies the outputs for competitive region or insensitive area using time window and median filter.

  • This paper is a study on the word recognition using neural network. A limited vocabulary, speaker independent, isolated word recognition system has been built. This system recognizes isolated word without performing segmentation, phoneme identification, or dynamic time wrapping. It needs a static pattern approach to recognize a spatio-temporal pattern. The preprocessing only includes preceding and tailing silence removal, and word length determination. A LPC analysis is performed on each of 24 equally spaced frames. The PARCOR coefficients plus 3 other features from each frame is extracted. In order to simplify a structure of neural network, we composed binary code form to decrease output nodes.
