Attractiveness of Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Aggregation Pheromone Produced in Korea (국산 갈색날개노린재 집합페로몬의 유인력)

  • Methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate is the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Attractiveness of the pheromone synthesized in Korea was compared with that of synthesized in Japan in the field. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. Catches in trap baited with Korean pheromone was significantly higher than that baited with Japanese one only in one orchard out of three sweet persimmon orchards in 2008. However there was no difference in trap catches between Korean and Japanese pheromones at three sites in 2009. Gas chromatography analysis showed that the components of both pheromones were not different each other. Monitoring of P. stali seasonal fluctuation using Korean pheromone showed that the bugs were most captured in August, 2008 and in September, 2009.

  • Sex pheromone composition was analyzed for Dichocrocis punctiferalis, which attacksapple, peach, chestnut fruits, etc., and its behavioral and field trapping studies were conducted to developa monitoring system with its sex pheromone. Virgin females showed maximum mating behavior andhairpencil extrusion behavior between 4-5 hrs after lights-off under 16L18D photoperiod and 26rf 1 "C.During this period, two sex pheromone components, ElO-hexadecenal and ZlO-hexadecenal, weredetected by GC analysis in the hexane extract of abdominal tips of virgin females. The best attraction ofmales to various synthetic sex pheromone blends was obtained at the 70 : 30 ratio of ElO-hexadecenal andZ10-hexadecenal for hair pencil extrusion and at the 80 : 20 ratio for flying upwind response. The highestattractiveness in fields was obtained between 70 : 30 and 80 : 20 from several tests in apple, peach andchestnut orchards.and chestnut orchards.

  • Effects of pheromone and GMP on the protein synthesis during development of Stigmatella aurantiaca under the starved condition were examined and compared with that of light on the same process. Light, pheromone, and GMP induced at least three, five, and two kinds of new proteins, respectively; one of them having molecular weight 30,0000 was the only protein present in all cases. It was also observed that there are an increase or decrease in the expression and disappearance or reappearance of several vegetative proteins during development under the each condition. It may be deduced from all these results that the mechanism of development in Stigmatella aurantiaca is a complex on which may be affected not only by a class of development-specific proteines but also by other classes of new proteins as well as several classes of proteins present in the vegetative cells.

  • Behavior of Matsucoccus thunbergianae Miller and Park males immediately after emergence from their cocooning site, and meteorological factors affecting the responsiveness of the flying males to synthetic pheromone were studied. On Pinus thunbergii saplings, newly emerged males walked around to locate females. The males lanuched themselves into flight after up to three times of copulation. Without the presence of females, the males took off within five minutes whereas when the females were placed nearby but copulation was artifically prohibited the males did not take off. In a wind tunnel, the presence of female pheromone discouraged male take off. More males were flying in sunny area than in shade, but light intensity had no effect on the responsiveness of males toward the pheromone source. Wind speed was the main meteorological factor that affected the male responsiveness. Most males, after hitting the substrate near pheromone source with various posture, stood on their feet and approached the source.

  • Neuropeptides produced in neurosecretory cells are the largest group of insect hormones. They regulate various physiological functions, such as fat body homeostasis, feeding, digestion, excretion, circulation, reproduction, metamorphosis, and behavior throughout all life stages. The PRXamide peptide family (X, a variable amino acid) is a well-characterized neuropeptide component with a common amino acid sequence, PRXamide (NH2), at the C-terminal end conserved across Insecta. The PRXamide peptides are classified into three subfamilies, each having diverse biological roles in insects: (1) pyrokinin (PK) includes the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) and the diapause hormone (DH), (2) the capability (CAPA) peptides, and (3) the ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH). PBAN as a member of PK subfamily was first identified to stimulate pheromone biosynthesis in moths three decades ago. Since then, PBAN peptides have been extensively studied by various research groups from a broad spectrum of arthropods. In this paper, we briefly review insect PBAN molecules with emphasis on gene structure and expression, signal transduction, physiological mechanism in sex pheromone biosynthesis, and application for pest management.

Enhancement of Species-specific Attraction by Addition of a Minor Component of Sex Pheromone Gland of Grapholita dimorpha (복숭아순나방붙이 성페로몬샘의 미량성분 첨가에 따른 종특이적 유인력 증가 효과)

  • Two congener species of Grapholita molesta and G. dimorpha have similar host ranges and adult occurrence patterns. In addition, the two species commonly use cis-8-dodecenyl acetate (Z8-12:Ac) and trans-8-dodecenyl acetate (E8-12:Ac) as their major sex pheromone components. The commercial lures made of the two components, therefore, suffer a mixed attraction of these two species. This study was conducted to assess any effect of their known minor sex pheromone components to reduce the mixed attraction. When cis-8-tetradecenyl acetate (Z8-14:Ac) was added to the commercial sex pheromone consisting of Z8-12:Ac/E8-12:Ac = 85/15, the attraction to G. dimorpha was not affected, but its attraction to G. molesta was significantly reduced. However, the addition of either dodecanyl acetate (12:Ac) or tetradedecanyl acetate (14:Ac) did not influence on the attraction of both species to the commercial lure. The addition of E8-14:Ac to 3-component sex pheromone, Z8-12:Ac/E8-12:Ac/Z8-14:Ac = 85/15/10, the attraction to G. dimorpha was rather significantly suppressed. From these results, the 3-component sex pheromone, Z8-12:Ac/E8-12:Ac/Z8-14:Ac = 85/15/10 was suggested as an improved composition of sex pheromone lure for G. dimorpha.

Utilization of Sticky Traps to Increase the Efficiency of Pheromone Traps Against Riptortus clavatus (Hemiptera: Alydidae) (톱다리개미허리노린재 방제용 페로몬트랩의 효율증대를 위한 끈끈이트랩 활용)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the attraction distance range of pheromone traps used in the control of stink bugs, which are a problem in persimmon orchards, and the effects of sticky traps in increasing the efficiency of pheromone traps. Labeled individuals were released and then recaptured on pheromone and sticky traps. Riptortus clavatus was attracted to pheromone traps up to 60 m away. The capture rates of R. clavatus on sticky traps were 35%, 27%, 34%, 2.9%, and 0.6% after 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks To improve clarity, II have added this information from the details shown in the figures. Besides, when both pheromone and sticky traps were used at the same time following the release-recapture method, the capture rate of R. clavatus was 12 times higher than that by using pheromone traps only.

Disruption of Chemical Communication of Synanthedon tenuis (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) by Sex Pheromone Dispensers in Sweet Persimmon Orchards (단감원에서 성페로몬 방출기에 의한 애기유리나방의 화학통신 교란 효과)

  • Pheromone-based techniques are becoming a viable strategy of insect pest management as facilitated by the exponential increase in numbers of pheromone identifications from many insect pests. This is the report on the efficacy of pheromone-mediated chemical communication disruption (PCD) technique against the Korean population of smaller clearwing moths, Synanthedon tenuis (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) using its female sex pheromone component, (Z, Z)-3, 13-octadecadien-1-ol. The PCD trials were carried out four times during 2016 and 2017 in persimmon orchards located at Suncheon and Jinju Cities in Korea, and the PCD efficacy was expressed as the mean differences in the seasonal catches of S. tenuis males in the PCD and control plots. The seasonal male moth catches in monitoring traps installed in the PCD plots were significantly lower as compared with those installed in the control plots. Consequently, the PCD efficacy in the experimental orchards ranged from 95.2-100% with an average efficacy of 98.8 ± 1.2%, revealing a future possibility of pheromone-based management of S. tenuis.
