The vir genes expression of Ti plasmid is induced by a family of related phenolic compounds. We investigated the effects of various phenolic compounds, Ti plasmids and hosts on the expression of the vir genes in the same type of octopine Ti plasmids, pTiKU12, pTiAch5 and pTiA6. The vir gene induction of pTiKU12 was remarkably stimulated by p-coumaric acid in relation to acetosyringone, but those of pTiAch5 and pTiA6 were more stimulated by acetosyringone than by p-coumaric acid. The effect of phenolic compound on the vir gene induction was different according to the kind of Ti plasmids. Also, the vir gene expression of A. tumefaciens KU913, which has pTiKU12 was about 6.2 times as much as that of A. tumefaciens KU915, which has pTiKU12 in KU12 host, in the presence of ferulic acid. But no difference was shown in the presence of p-coumaric acid. The vir gene induction abilities of phenolic compounds are different according to the kinds of phenolic compounds, Ti plasmids and hosts.
ln our continued search for biologically active compounds from traditional medicine, we found that ethyl acetate fraction from Inonotus obliquus showed potent antioxidant activities on three different cell-free bioassay systems. Bioassay-directed chromatographic fractionation of the ethyl acetate fraction from Inonotus obliquus afforded four phenolic compounds, 4-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-(E)-3-buten-2-one (1) , 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (2), protocatechuic acid (3) and caffeic acid (4) along with three sterols such as lanosterol (5), ergosterol peroxide (6) and 9,11-dehydroergosterol peroxide (7). Among isolates, phenolic compounds (1-4) were assessed for antioxidant activities. Almost phenolic compounds showed potent DPPH and superoxide anion radicals scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities indicating that these phenolic compounds contribute to the antioxidative activities of I. obliquus. Compounds 2-3 and 7 were isolated for the first time from this plant.
Antioxidative compounds contained in roasted safflower seeds were investigated. Six phenolic compounds, N-feruloylserotonin, N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin, matairesinol, 8'-hydroxyarctigenin, acacetin 7-Ο-β-D-glucoside(tilianine) and acacetin were isolated and identified from the extract of seeds. The inhibitory effects of six phenolic compounds on 1,1-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical and lipid peroxidation induced by H₂O₂/FeSO₄in rat liver microsomes were determined. Two serotonins showed more potent DPPH radical scavenging activity, and a stronger inhibitory effect on the lipid peroxidation than that of α-tocopherol. In addition, acacetin and matairesinol also considerably inhibited lipid peroxidation, while 2-hydroxy-arctigenin and tilianine were inactive. These results suggest that phenolic compounds, including serotonins, lignans and flavonoids in the roasted safflower seeds can be used as potential dietary natural antioxidants.
Transglycosylation from sucrose to phenolic compounds by the recombinant sucrose phosphorylase from Bifidobacterium longum was studied. HPLC analysis revealed that the enzyme transferred glucosyl residue of sucrose to 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, 1,4-dihydroxybenzene, 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene, and 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. The enzyme could transfer the glucosyl moiety of sucrose to phenolic compounds which have phenolic OH or alcoholic (hydroxymethyl) OH group.
Background: The study of phenolic compounds profiles and antioxidative activity in ginseng fruit, leaves, and roots with respect to cultivation years, and has been little reported to date. Hence, this study examined the phenolic compounds profiles and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical-scavenging activities in the fruit, leaves, and roots of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) as a function of cultivation year. Methods: Profiling of 23 phenolic compounds in ginseng fruit, leaves, and roots was investigated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with the external calibration method. Antioxidative activity of ginseng fruit, leaves, and roots were evaluated using the method of DPPH free-radical-scavenging activity. Results: The total phenol content in ginseng fruit and leaves was higher than in ginseng roots (p < 0.05), and the phenol content in the ginseng samples was significantly correlated to the DPPH free-radical-scavenging activity ($r=0.928^{****}$). In particular, p-coumaric acid ($r=0.847^{****}$) and ferulic acid ($r=0.742^{****}$) greatly affected the DPPH activity. Among the 23 phenolic compounds studied, phenolic acids were more abundant in ginseng fruit, leaves, and roots than the flavonoids and other compounds (p < 0.05). In particular, chlorogenic acid, gentisic acid, p- and m-coumaric acid, and rutin were the major phenolic compounds in 3e6-yr-old ginseng fruit, leaves, and roots. Conclusion: This study provides basic information about the antioxidative activity and phenolic compounds profiles in fruit, leaves, and roots of Korean ginseng with cultivation years. This information is potentially useful to ginseng growers and industries involved in the production of high-quality and nutritional ginseng products.
Land application of treated palm oil mill effluent (TPOME) could be used as an alternative tertiary wastewater treatment process. However, phenolic compounds in TPOME might be leached to the environment. This study investigated the ability of grasses on reducing phenolic compounds in the leachate after TPOME application. Several pasture grasses in soil pots were compared after irrigating with TPOME from stabilization ponds, which contained 360-630 mg/L phenolic compounds. The number of soil bacteria in planted pots increased over time with the average of $10^8CFU/g$ for mature grasses, while only $10^4-10^6CFU/g$ were found in the unplanted control pots. The leachates from TPOME irrigated grass pots contained lower amounts of phenolic compounds and had lower phytotoxicity than that of control pots. The phenol removal efficiency of grass pots was ranged 67-93% and depended on grass cultivars, initial concentration of phenolic compounds and frequency of irrigations. When compared to water irrigation, TPOME led to an increased phenolic compounds accumulation in grass tissues and decreased biomass of Brachiaria hybrid and Brachiaria humidicola but not Panicum maximum. Consequently, the application of TPOME could be conducted on grassland and the grass species should be selected based on the utilization of grass biomass afterward.
The phenolic compounds were isolated from the cigarette smoke condensate using two immiscible organic solvents by a partition coefficient. Of them, 20 phenolic compounds were identified by GC and GC/MS. The amount of the phenolic compounds was phenol, p-crestol, hydroxybensoic acid in order. And there was no difference in composition of these compound dependent on leaf tobacco . About 70% amount of these compounds were absorbed to cellulose acetate filter used. The contents and composition of these compounds were various in the commercial cigarette.

Phenolic compounds in air are toxic even at their low concentrations. We had evaluated a total of five phenolic compounds (Phenol, o-Cresol, m-Cresol, 2-Nitrophenol and 4-Chloro-3-methylphenol) in artificial air using a combination of ATD/GC/MS. To compare the adsorption efficiency of these phenolic compounds, three adsorbents (Tenax TA, Carbotrap and Carbopack B) were tested. Tenax TA adsorbent was most effective of all the adsorbents used for the efficiency test. Five phenolic compounds were found to be very stable on adsorbent tubes for 4 days at room temperature. Detection limit of five phenolic compounds ranged from 0.05 to 0.08 ppb (when assumed to collect 10 L air). The calibration curve was linear over the range of 22∼ 164 ng. The reproducibility was less than 4%. Sampling of duplicate pairs (DPs) was made to demonstrate duplicate precision and sampling efficiency.
In order to investigate the phenolic compounds inducing the expression of Ti-plasmid vir genes of Agrobacterium tumefaciens KU12, we tested whether the eighteen phenolic compounds known as vir gene inducer have the activity to induce vir operon of the Ti-plasmid in A. tumefaciens KU12 transformed with pSM358cd. Also, the phenolic compounds in some tumor-uninduced dicotyledons and the attachment ability of a. tumefaciens KU12 on such dicotyledonous plants were investigated in an effort to analyze the reason why no tumor is formed on the plants. As results, fifteen among eighteen phenolic compounds known as vir gene inducer induced the expression of the Ti-plasmid vir genes. Some dicotyledonous plants which do not form the tumor have the phenolic compounds inducing the vir genes, but have less ability of the attachment than the dicotyledonous plants forming tumor.

Phenolic compounds are manufacturing by-products commonly found in industrial wastewater. The toxicity of high level phenolic compounds in wastewater threatens not only the aquatic organisms, but also many components of the adjacent ecosystem. One of the major light harvesting pigments in cyanobacteria is phycocyanin which can be rapidly and specifically degraded by external stimuli such as nutritional depletion or environmental stress. We employed the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 as an indicator organism in estimating the pollution level by phenolic compounds. The phycocyanin content of the cyanobacterium decreased without significantly altering the total chlorophyll as the phenol concentration in a medium increased. We examined the phenol contamination level using the correlation of the phycocyanin content and the phenol concentration. Our results indicated that no significant pollution by phenolic compounds was found in several waterbodies in the vicinity of Daegu, South Korea.
