  • Widespread commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is expected to be realized in various application fields with the advent of cost-effective fabrication of cells and stacks in high volumes. Cost-reduction efforts have focused on production yield, power density, operation temperature, and continuous manufacturing. In this article, we examine several issues associated with processing for SOFCs from the standpoint of the bimodal packing model, considering the external constraints imposed by rigid substrates. Optimum compositions of composite cathode materials with high volume fractions of the second phase (particles dispersed in matrix) have been analyzed using the bimodal packing model. Constrained sintering of thin electrolyte layers is also discussed in terms of bimodal packing, with emphasis on the clustering of dispersed particles during anisotropic shrinkage. Finally, the structural transition of dispersed particle clusters during constrained sintering has been correlated with the structural stability of thin-film electrolyte layers deposited on porous solid substrates.

  • In this study, the $\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) thin films were fabricated by physical vapor deposition method. Also, the properties of dielectric relaxation were studied to understand carrier's behavior of PVDF thin films, to be regarded as the excellent piezo and pyroelectricity. In the process of vapor deposition, the $\beta$-PVDF thin films have been fabricated under the condition of the substrate temperature at 3$0^{\circ}C$, the applied electric field at 142.8kV/cm and the pressure at 2.0${\times}10^{-5}$torr. The dielectric properties of PVDF have been studied in the frequency range 10Hz to 1MHz at temperature from 30 to $100^{\circ}C$. The relative dielectric constant of $\alpha$ and $\beta$-PVDF were 6.8 and 9.8, respectively, under a frequency of 1kHz. Such a phenomenon was caused by the decrease in intermolecular forces originated by the phase-transition from the TGTG' molecular conformation to the TT planar zig-zag conformation. And the relative dielectric constant is increased as a measuring temperature increases, because of the reduction of relaxation time caused by the decrease of intermolecular force.

  • Metachromatic behavior of methylene blue (MB) in solutions of aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), chondroitin sulfate and L-${\alpha}$-lecithin vesicle at $18~52^{\circ}$C has been studied by absorption spectroscopy. MB was clustered in the matrix of the vesicle with high concentration of L-${\alpha}$-lecithin. The metachromasy of MB was found to be independent of phase transition temperature of vesicles. These results suggest that the dyes were aggregated on the hydrophilic surfaces of vesicle. In the vesicular system, the metachromatic effect of MB was dramatically decreased in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) than SDS. It is estimated that the intercalation site of these surfactants on vesicle surfaces was different, that is, the intercalation of CTAB was more effective than that of SDS.

  • Hertzian cyclic fatigue properties of the alumina-glass dental ceramics were evaluated in exact in vitro environment at contact loads from 200 N to 1000 N and up to 10$\^$6/ cycles to investigate the indentation damage and strength degradation. At 200 N, no strength degradation and crack generation was observed up to 10$\^$6/ contact cycles. As load increased from 200 N to 1000 N, the drastic reduction in strength was found when the damage transition from ring to radial crack occurred. The extent of strength degradation was more pronounced in vitro environments probably due to chemical reaction of artificial saliva with glass phase through radial cracks introduced during large numbers of contacts.

  • Dispersions are prepared from poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEAA) ionomer with two different counter-ions, ammonium and sodium. The diffusional characteristic of urea aqueous solution are measured for the films prepared from the above mentioned dispersions. It is attempted to find the relationship between diffusional behavior and various chemical and physical characteristics of films. DSC is employed to characterize glass transition temperature and degree of crystallinity and the structural features of crystal phase and ionic clusters are examined by WAXD and FTIR. The diffusional characteristics of ionomer is found to be dependent on various parameters such as the size of initial dispersion as well as the kind of counter ion and the degree of neutralization.

  • The structural changes viewed from the molecular level have been investigated for the isothermal crystallization phenomena of polyethylene (PE) and the solvent-induced crystallization phenomenon of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) glassy sample. The data, which were collected by the time-resolved measurements of Fourier-transform infrared spectra, Raman spectra, synchrotron-sourced small-angle X-ray scattering, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and so on, were combined together to extract the detailed structural information in these phase transition phenomena. In the case of PE, the isothermal crystallization from the melt to the orthorhombic form was found to occur via the conformationally-disordered trans chain form, followed by the formation of the lamellar stacking structure of regular orthorhombic-type crystals. In the case of sPS, the amorphous chains in the glassy sample were found to enhance the mobility through the interaction with the injected solvent molecules, which act as a trigger to cause the conformational ordering from the random coil to the regular T$_2$G$_2$-type helical form. The thus created short helical segments were found to grow into longer helices, which gathered together to form the crystallites, as revealed by the organized coupling of the infrared, Raman and X-ray scattering data.

  • Pyromorphite($Pb_{4.85}(P_{1.02}O_4)_3Cl_{1.04}$) which belongs to the apatite group was compressed up to 33.4 GPa for its equation of state at ambient temperature. High pressure experiment was performed with symmetrical diamond anvil cell employing the angle dispersive X-ray diffraction method. Pressure was determined by ruby fluorescence calibration method. No phase transition were observed and bulk modulus was determined to be 80(7) GPa when $K{_0}^{\prime}=13(2)$. Employing the normalized pressure-normalized strain analysis, reliability check of the compressible behavior was conducted.

  • A thermoresponsive poly(NIPAM-co-dye) labeled with benzopyran-based D-$\pi$-A type dye was prepared by typical radical copolymerization. It can be also constructed a acid/base-induced molecular switch by modulation of intramolecular charge transfer with protonation/deprotonation. The lower critical solution temperature behavior was investigated by means of UV-vis spectroscopy which allows the measurement of the phase transition from $25^{\circ}C$ to $45^{\circ}C$ in aqueous DMSO solution. The morphology of the internal microstructure of the poly(NIPAM-co-dye) hydrogel was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The reversible switch could be obtained by thermal and acid/base stimuli.

  • Syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) presents a very complex polymorphic behavior depending on the sample preparation history and exhibits a solid-solid phase transition. Each different polymorphic structures of the s-PS sample were prepared by annealing the samples from room temperature to 220 $^{\circ}C$. The structural changes induced by annealing were investigated using FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Although the crystallization kinetics of s-PS are difficult to investigate with DSC due to its fast crystallization rate, it was possible to determine crystallinity changes in the s-PS sample using infrared characteristic peaks with Beer-Lambert's law.

  • This paper presents a soft switching DC/DC converter for high voltage application. The interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme is used to reduce the ripple current at the output capacitor and the size of output inductors. Two converter cells are connected in series at the high voltage side to reduce the voltage stresses of the active switches. Thus, the voltage stress of each switch is clamped at one half of the input voltage. On the other hand, the output sides of two converter cells are connected in parallel to achieve the load current sharing and reduce the current stress of output inductors. In each converter cell, a half-bridge converter with the asymmetrical PWM scheme is adopted to control power switches and to regulate the output voltage at a desired voltage level. Based on the resonant behavior by the output capacitance of power switches and the transformer leakage inductance, active switches can be turned on at zero voltage switching (ZVS) during the transition interval. Thus, the switching losses of power MOSFETs are reduced. The current doubler rectifier is used at the secondary side to partially cancel ripple current. Therefore, the root-mean-square (rms) current at output capacitor is reduced. The proposed converter can be applied for high input voltage applications such as a three-phase 380V utility system. Finally, experiments based on a laboratory prototype with 960W (24V/40A) rated power are provided to demonstrate the performance of proposed converter.
