  • Shape memory alloy (SMA) helical springs have found a large number of different applications in industries including biomedical devices and actuators. According to the application of SMA springs in different actuators, they are usually under tension and torsion loadings. The ability of SMAs in recovering inelastic strains is due to martensitic phase transformation between austenite and martensite phases. Stress or temperature induced martensite transformation induced of SMAs is a remarkable property which makes SMA springs more superior in comparison with traditional springs. The present paper deals with the simulation of SMA helical spring at room temperature. Three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model is used to describe superelastic behavior of helical spring. This constitutive model is implemented as a user subroutine through ABAQUS STANDARD (UMAT), and the process of the implementation is presented. Numerical results show that the developed constitutive model provides an appropriate approach to captures the general behavior of SMA helical springs.

  • The Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers were fabricated by the sol-gel method. The added $Al_2O_3$ amounts were varied from 5 to 20 mol%. The phase transformation studies of a drawn Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers were investigated by use of X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructure and tensile strength of fibers were subjected to scanning electron microscopy and tensile strength tester. When $Al_2O_3$ was added to the Mg-PSZ fibers, it was found out from the analysis of XRD patterns and Raman spectra that a small amount of crystalline spinel($MgAl_2O_4$) started to form due to the reaction between $Al_2O_3$ and MgO, at $1000^{\circ}C$, and the phase transformation temperature of $ZrO_2$ crystal phase at different sintering temperatures increased. Also, the rapid grain growth with average size of 2.0 ${\mu}m$ shown in Mg-PSZ fiber at $1500^{\circ}C$ was considerably suppressed to 0.39 ${\mu}m$ by adding $Al_2O_3$ at the same temperature. When the Mg-PSZ/$Al_2O_3$ fibers containing 5 mol% $Al_2O_3$ were sintered $800^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, average tensile strength of fibers was 0.9 GPs at diameters of 20 to 30 ${\mu}m$, but as the sintering temperatures was increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, average tensile strength of fibers increased to 1.2 GPa in the same diameter range.

  • The effect of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ phase on the mechanical behavior in 7 mole% calcia partially stabilized zirconia has been studied. The $ZrO_2$ powder containg 7 mole% CaO prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method calcined at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was nearly 100% tetragonal but as the calcining temperature increased certain amount of monoclinic phase appeared. The sintered specimen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was aged at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 0, 24, 48, 72 hours. X-ray diffraction data showed that in the aged specimen monoclinic tetragonal and cubic phase coexisted. The Kc value of aged specimen for 48 hr was about 4.5MN/m3/2 much greater than unaged sample. But aged for 72 hr the KiC value was decreased. The increasing of toughness in PSZ is based on the Stress-Induced Phase Transformation that is metastable tetra-gonal $ZrO_2$ changes t stable monoclinic phase within the stress field of crack and the mechanical fracture energy absorption is occured But in this case due to certain amount of tetragonal phase transformed to monoclinic phase during cooling the microcrack effect by transformation also considered. Trerefore both Stress-Induced Phase Transformation and inclusion induced microcracking effect contrbute to the increase of fracture toughness of 7 mole% CaO-$ZrO_2$ containing monoclinic and tetragnola phase simulataneously.

  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.

  • Size and crystalline phase changes of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ nanoparticles formed in a $H_{2}/O_{2}$ flame have been investigated. At flame temperatures below $1350^{\circ}C$, the mean particle size increased monotonously with the distance from the burner edge; but in high-temperature flames above $1650^{\circ}C$, it suddenly decreased from 20 nm to ${\sim}3$ nm with the distance from the burner edge. The results of X-ray diffraction and HRTEM showed that this sudden reduction of the size of nanoparticles was accompanied by a partial phase transformation from ${\gamma}$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$ into ${\alpha}$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$. We suggest the structural instability due to ${\gamma}-$ to ${\alpha}-phase$ transformation as a mechanism for a rapid fragmentation of 20 nm particles into 3 nm ones.

  • Well-shaped NaA zeolite cubic crystals of a large size of $5-7{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a mother solution having a $3.55Na_2O:Al_2O_3:1.6SiO_2:593\~2000H_2O$ composition. Thermal treatment of NaA zeolite crystals resulted in the formation of a crystalline phase of $NaAlSiO_4-Camegeite$ between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. Even at $1000^{\circ}C,\;NaAlSiO_4$ phase was found as a major product. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and DTA/TGA and BET analyses were used to characterize the initial materials and the obtained products after various heat treatments.

  • Carbide dissolution during heating processes can change chemical composition of martensitic stainless steel in its austenitic phase. Although the austenitizing treatments were carried out at a homogeneous austenite region, the amount of carbon atom in the matrix differs. Increase in the amount of carbon contents in the matrix resulted in decreasing MS temperature, which consequently causes the volume fraction of the retained austenite to increase. This study reveals the effects of the austenitizing treatment on the properties of Fe - 0.3C - 14Cr - 3Mo martensitic stainless steel change with different austenitizing temperatures.

  • A chemically stabilized $\beta$-cristobalite, which is stabilized by stuffing cations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}$, was prepared by a solution-polymerization route employing Pechini resin or PVA solution as a polymeric carrier. The polymeric carrier affected the crystallization temperature, morphology of calicined powder, and particle size distribution. In case of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution process, a fine $\beta$-cristobalite powder with a narrow particle size distribution (average particle size : 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$) and a BET specific surface area of 72 $\m^2$/g was prepared by an attrition-milling for 1 h after calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Wider particle size distribution and higher specific surface area were observed for the $\beta$-cristobalite powder derived from Pechini resin. The cubie(P1-to-tetraganalb) phase transformation in polynystalline $\beta$-cristobalite was induced at approximately 18$0^{\circ}C$. Like other materials showing transformation toughening, a critical size effect controlled the $\beta$-to-$\alpha$ transformation. Densifed cristobalite sample had some cracks in its internal texture after annealing. The cracks, occurred spontaneoulsy on cooling, were observed in the sample with an average grain sizes of 4.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ or above. In case of the sintered cristobalite having a composition of CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$, small amount of amorphous phase and slow grain growth during annealing were observed. Shear stress-induced transformation was also observed in ground specimen. Cristobalite having a composition of CaO.2Al2O3.80SiO2 showed a more sensitive response to shear stress than the CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$ type cristobalite. Shear-induced transformation resulted in an increase of volume about 13% in $\alpha$-cristobalite phase on annealing for above 10 h in the case of the former composition.

  • The thermal behavior of transformation and characteristics of seeded sample powders prepared by simultaneous $\alpha$-Al2O3 seed addition with water on the Al-sec-butoxide hydrolysis were studied. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seed particles are shown to act as nuclei for transformation of $\theta$-to $\alpha$-Al2O3 and to result in an increase in thetransformation kinetics and lowering of the transformation temperature by as much as 143$^{\circ}C$. Simultaneous seed addition on the hydrolysis resulted in uniform dispersin and creation of nucleation site on seed surface and only 0.1wt% seeding lowered the transformation temperature by as much as 115$^{\circ}C$. For 3wt% seed addition, $\alpha$-Al2O3 single phase was obtained at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 100 minutes and the specific surface area of products were lowered to 11.9$m^2$/g as compared with that of $\alpha$-Al2O3 powder prepared without seed at 115$0^{\circ}C$ ; 15.1$m^2$/g due to depression of vermicular structure growth.

  • In other to progress better crystallization transition and long phase-transformation data of phase-change memory (PRAM), we investigated about the effect of Sb doping and Ag ions percolating into Ge-Se-Te phase-change material. Doped Sb concentrations was determined each of 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt%. As the Sb-doping concentration was increased, the resistivity decreased and the crystallization temperature increased. Ionization of Ag was progressed by DPSS laser (532 nm) for 1 hour. The resistivity was more decreased and the crystallization temperature was more increased in case of adding Ag layer under Sb-(Ge-Se-Te) thin film. At the every condition of thin films included Ag layer more stable states were indicated compare with just Sb-doped Ge-Se-Te thin films.
