Photopolymerization and phase separation behavior during the PDLC formation process were investigated by simultaneous resistivity and turbidity measurement. Using this experimental method, we investigated the effect of liquid crystal structure on photopolymerization and phase separation behavior.
Cell gap dependence on anisotropic phase separation was studied. The results showed that the morphology of phase separation depended on cell gap and material parameters. With numerical simulation and experiments, the optimal range of cell gap in the formation of polymer layer and liquid crystal was suggested for given material parameters.
To investigate an effect of phase separation on precipitation characteristics of CuCl nanocrystals in CuCl doped nonlinear optical glasses, borosilicate glass systems with 9 different compositions with ~2wt% of CuCl were selected and CuCl doped glasses were prepared by melting and precipitation method. Microstructural properties of the CuCl doped glasses were analyzed by optical absorption spectroscopy, acid elution test, TEM, and EDXS. While phase separation did not occur in Glass A~D, interconnected and droplet microstructures due to phase separation were found in Glass E, F and Glass G~I, respectively. In the particular composition of the matrix glasses in this study, the precipitation of the CuCl particles was observed in the phase separable glasses, not in phase non-separable glasses. The CuCl particles were precipitated in both silica-rich phase region and boronrich phase region of the glass matrix. In the case of 7.7Na2O-36.6B2O3-52.7SiO2(mole%) glass, the larger CuCl particles than those in the silica-rich phase region were observed in the boron-rich phase region.

The Characteristics of dividing the dispersed bubble, plug, and slug steam-water flow in the horizontal junctions with horizontal branches have been experimentally investigated. The experimental investigation of the separation phenomena in a $45^{\circ}$ horizontal wye with equal pipe inner diameter of 25 mm is presented to provide a data base for the development and verification of the analytical models. The phase separation and pressure distribution in the three legs of each test section are obtained through the set of measurements made in the present work. And the dependence of phase separation on different parameters, such as inlet quality and mass flux, is discussed.
To investigate an effect of phase separation on precipitation characteristics of ZnS microcrystals in ma-trix glass ZnS doped borosilicate glasses for nonlinear optical applications were prepared by melting and pre-cipitation process. ZnS dopant contributed to phase separation promotion which increased the phase separa-tion of the matrix glass within immiscibility region. It was also found that ZnS as phase separation promoter showed a similar contribution for some selected glass compositions in miscibility region. The precipitation of ZnS microcrystals occurred in thephase separable glass compoitions. The radius of ZnS microcrystals in-creased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and Na2O contents of matrix glass composition. The ZnS particle sizes estimated by effective mass approximation ranged from about 30 to 80${\AA}$ It was suf-ficiently small to show quantum confinement effect.

Porous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/glycerol mixtures. The liquid-liquid (L-L) phase boundaries are shifted to higher temperature when the ethylene contents in EVOH increase. Moreover, the kinetic study proved that the growth of droplets formed by the general liquid-liquid (L-L) phase separation obeyed a power-law scaling relationship in the later stage of spinodal decomposition (SD). A new phase separation mechanism was presented, in which the L-L phase separation could be resulted from the crystallization. The hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The membranes showed asymmetric structures with skin layer near the outer surface, the larger pores just below the skin layer and the smaller pores near the inner surface. The effect of ethylene content (EC) in EVOH, cooling water bath temperature and take-up speed on membrane performance was investigated.
Fluidic conditions for the separation of phases were surveyed in a microfluidic aqueous two-phase extraction system. The infusion ratio between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran solution defines the concentrations of each polymer in micro-channel, which determine the phase-separation. The appropriate ratio between PEG (M.W. 8000, 10%, w/v) and dextran T500 (M.W. 500000, 5%, w/v) in order to perform the separation of phases of both polymers was observed as changing the mixed ratio of both polymers. Based on the fluidic conditions, stable two-phase solutions were obtained within 4% to 8% and 3% to 1% of PEG and dextran, respectively. In addition, the characteristics of the two-phase were discussed. The separation technique studied in the paper can be applied for the implementation of a lab-on-a chip which can detect various biological entities such cells, bacterium, and virus in an integrated manner using built in a biosensor inside the chip.
The isothermal cure reactions of blends of epoxy (DGEBA, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/anhydride resin with polyamide copolymer (poly(dimmer acid-co-alkyl polyamine)) or PEI were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Rheological measurements have been made to investigate the viscosity and mechanical relaxation behavior of the blends. The reaction rate and the final cure conversion were decreased with increasing the amount of thermoplastics in the blends. Lower values of final cure conversions in the epoxy/thermoplastic blends indicate that thermoplastics hinder the cure reaction between the epoxy and the curing agent. Complete miscibility was observed in the uncured blends of epoxy/thermoplastics up to $120^{\circ}C$ but phase separations occurred in the early stages of the curing process at higher temperatures than $120^{\circ}C$. According to the rheological measurement results, a rise of G' and G" at the onset of phase separation is seen. A rise of G' and G" is not observed for neat epoxy system since no phase separation is seen during cure reaction. At the onset of phase separation the rheological behavior was influenced by the amount of thermoplastics in the epoxy/thermoplastic blends, and the onset of phase separation can be detected by rheological measurements.
Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.
Various amount of $P_2O_5$ were added to $PbO-B_2O_3$ binary glass system to investigate its effect on the phase separation and physical properties of the glass. Experiments such as infrared spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy thermal expansion softening point and microhardnesses were done. Phase separation with $B_2O_3$ rich phase matrix and PbO rich phase droplet was observed for the glasses con-taining less than 10m/o of PbO while the opposite morphology of phase separation for the glasses containing more than 11m/o of PbO. By adding increasing amount of $P_2O_5$ their phase separation region was extended to the glass containing more than 20m/o of PbO. These effects can be interpreted in terms of the inoic field strength difference of each ions in the glasses. The abrupt changes of physical properties such as softening point thermal expansion and microhardness were observed for the glass with around 10m/o of PbO in this system. These changes are by the matrix composition change from TEX>$B_2O_3$ rich phase to PbO rich phase depending on PbO concentration.
