A study on vibration characteristics and tuning of smart cantilevered beams featuring an electo-rheological fulid

  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electic field, and this phase-change typically manifests itself as a many-order-of-magnitude change in the rheological behavior. This phenomenon permits the global stiffness and energy- dissipation properties of the beam structures to be tuned in order to synthesize the desired vibration characteristics. This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focussed on evaluation the vibration properties of hollow cantilevered beams filled with an ER fluid. and consequently deriving an empirical model for predicting field-dependent vibration characteristics. A hydrous-based ER fluid consisting of corn starch and silicone oil is employed. The beams are considered to be uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Natural frequency, damping ratio and elastic modulus are evaluated with respect to the electric field and compared among three different beams: two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Transient and forced vibration responses are examined in time domain to demonstrate the validity of the proposed empirical model and to evaluate the feasibility of using the ERfluid as an actuator in a closed-loop control system.

The Proposed ER fluids used in the present study consists of starch particles and silicon oil. The ER fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electric filed.   • This paper shows a novel and simple IIR/FIR QMF(quadrature mirror filter) filter banks, mixed IIR and FIR structure. Here, FIR filters used for phase compensation. In this paper, we introduced analysis and synthesis filter banks, which used FIR linear phase filters and all pass filters. In result, phase response of analysis and synthesis filter banks become approximately linear characteristic. Simultaneously, a liasing distortion can be completely canceled.

가시광 다이오드 레이저의 스펙트럼 및 주입-잠금 특성분석 (Characteristics of Visible Laser Diode and Its Injection-Locking)

  • 가시광 디이오드 레이저의 온도와 주입 전류에 따른 발진 스펙트럼의 특성을 분석하고 주입-잠금 실험을 수행하여 잠금 특성을 분석하였다. 다이오드 레이저의 온도와 주입전류에 따른 스펙트럼 분석 결과 모드 도약이 일어나는 것을 관찰할 수 있었으며 모드 도약이 일어나지 않는 영역에서의 온도와 주입 전류의 변화에 대한 주파수 변화율이 각각 약 $33 GHz/^{\circ}C$, 6.6 GHz/mA로 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 일반적인 근적외선 AlGaAs 다이오드 레이저에서 순간적인 모드 도약이 일어나는 것과는 달리 가시광 다이오드 레이저는 모드 도약의 영역이 넓고 다중 모드로 동작하여 불량한 스펙트럼을 나타냈다. 이러한 특성을 갖는 다이오드 레이저를 이용한 주입-잠금 실험 결과 주입 강도가 $0~25\muW$에 대하여 잠금 대역폭은 0~5 GHz로 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 또한 주입 강도를 약 $25\muW$로 고정시키고, 편광 방향을 회전시키며 주입-잠금 대역폭을 측정한 결과 편광 방향에 의존함을 알 수 있었다. 주입-잠금된 광파의 위상 변화를 측정하기 위하여 주 레이저와 종 레이저를 간섭시켜 종 레이저의 주입 전류의 변화에 대한 간섭 무늬의 이동으로 위상의 변화를 조사하였다.

  • We have been investigated phase-change with temperature and electric field in chalcogenide $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ thin film. $T_c$(crystallization temperature) is confirmed by measuring the resistance and conductivity with the varying temperature on the hotplate. We have measured I-V characteristics with $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ chalcogenide thin film. It is compared with I-V characteristics after impress the variable pulse. The pulse has variable height and duration that used voltage and current source.

  • The freezing characteristics of two kinds of phase change materials (PCM) encapsulated in a spherical container were investigated with various cooling air temperatures and velocities. The super cooling and solidification time of PCM were highly affected by cooling air temperature and velocity. The experimental equations are derived to express total solidification time of the PCM in terms of Nusselt number and dimensionless temperature.

  • In thls study, the effects of the composltional change of cast Ni-Ti alloys on its characteristics including mechanical properties, phase transformation temperature, and ion releasing rate were investigated. brittle:behavior was shown in the stress-strain curve of the alloy containing low Ti content (Ni-44.0%Ti). By increasing the Ti content, the trend in stress-strain curves changed from that of superelasticity to that of shape memory effect(Ni-44.4%Ti, Ni-45.1%Ti, Ni-45, 5%Ti). Phase transformation temperature ($A_f, {\;}M_5$ point) increased with increasing the Ti content. lon releasing rate of four types of Mi-Ti alloys was very low compared to that of the dental commerical Ni-Cr alloy.

1선 지락사고에 대한 초전도한류기의 불평형 특성 (Unbalanced Characteristics of the Superconducting Fault Current Limiters with a Single Line-to-ground Fault)

  • We investigated the unbalanced characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased about 6 times of transport currents after the fault onset but was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unbalanced rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unbalanced rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault onset. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the balanced component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault onset but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase balanced state in about 60 ms after the fault onset at the three-phase system.

  • Characteristics of a phase change type micro actuator have been studied. The micro actuator has been designed for a micro-pump in an active direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC), consisting of an actuating chamber, a membrane, an electric heater, and a sensor of resistance temperature detector (RTD). In the present study, researches have been focused on the response of the actuator to control algorithm of the heater. The experiments demonstrated that the displacement of the membrane increase with temperature variation which is a function of applied voltage, duty ratio, and operating frequency of heating. The results also showed that operation of the actuator with high voltage at small duty of heating is more efficient than the same power consumption of heating with low voltage at large duty.

  • The simple construction and low cost, fault tolerant power electronic drive has made the switched reluctance drive a strong contender for many applications. But the switched reluctance drive does exhibit higher levels of vibration and acoustic noise than most competing drives. The main source of vibration in the switched reluctance drive is generated by rapid change of radial force when phase current is extinguished by commutation action. In this paper, a hybrid excitation method is proposed to reduce vibration and acoustic noise of the switched reluctance drive. The hybrid excitation has 2-phase excitation by long dwell angle as well as conventional 1-phase excitation. The vibration and acoustic noise are reduced because the scheme reduces abrupt change of excitation level by distributed and balanced excitation.
