  • Fire fighters rely on fire fighter protective clothing (FFPC) to provide adequate protection in the various hazardous environments. To enhance its protection performance, the FFPC material must be thick and thus it is difficult to achieve weight reduction. One of the methods of overcoming this problem, the addition of phase change material (PCM) to FFPC, is a new technology. In previous studies, the researches was mostly related to the temperature characteristics of the fibers incorporating PCM, but little information is available about its effect on burn injuries. Thus, in this study, the inhibitory effects of adding PCM to FFPC on second degree burns were investigated through numerical calculations. Thermal analyses of biological tissues and FFPC with embedded PCM exposed to several fire conditions causing severe tissue damage were studied by using a finite difference method based on the Pennes bio-heat equation. FFPC with embedded PCM was found to provide significantly greater protection than conventional fire fighting clothing, because the heat of absorption due to the phase change within the material is used to limit the heat conduction of the material.

  • This paper is an experimental study on the freezing protection valve used for solar water heating, air-conditioning systems, and plumbing systems. When the phase change occurs from liquid to solid, most of the substances except water volumetrically shrink. And referred to as PCM(Phase Change Material) a substance with such properties, the phase change temperature varies depending on the material. To prevent the freezing of the plumbing system, such as air-conditioning system in the winter season, we developed a several types of freezing protection valve using PCM whose freezing temperature are $2-4^{\circ}C$. The working principle of the freezing protection valve is that the fluid inside the pipe is released to prevent the system-collapse when fluid temperature reaches the freezing temperature of the PCM. And then the valve is closed and returned to the original position automatically when the temperature of the operating fluid rises. In this paper, the operating temperatures, discharge flow rate and the response characteristics of the valve during the operation are tested and investigated. From the results of this research the freezing protection valves employing PCM are expected to be commercialized in the near future.

  • An ideal semiconductor memory technology would combine or unify the attractive features of these technologies without acquiring any of the unattractive features. Such a memory technology, Phase Change RAM is now being developed using the class of elements known as chalcogenides. It is expected that this technology will eventually allow chips that have SRAM speed, DRAM cost, and Flash power characteristics and non-volatility.

  • A simple construction and low cost, fault tolerant power electronic drive has made the switched reluctance drive a strong contender for many applications. But, switched reluctance drive does exhibit higher levels of vibration and acoustic noise than that of most competing drives. The main source of vibration in the switched reluctance drive is generated by rapid change of radial magnetic force when phase current is extinguished during commutation action. In this paper,2 excitation method is proposed and compared to reduce vibration and acoustic noise of the switched reluctance drive. The excitation strategies considered this research are 1-phase, 2-phase and hybrid excitation method. 1-phase method is a conventional and 2-phase method is excited 2 phases simultaneously. The hybrid excitation has 2-phase excitation by long dwell angle as well as conventional 1-phase excitation. The vibration and acoustic noise are compared and tested. Suggested 2-phase and hybrid strategies reduce acoustic noise because the scheme reduces abrupt change of excitation level by distributed and balanced excitation.

  • In this study, $Ge_8Se_{(2+x)}Te_{(6-x)}$ thin film amorphous-to-crystalline phase-change rate was evaluated in using a nano-pulse scanner. The focused laser beam with a diameter <10 ${\mu}m$ was illuminated in the power (P) and pulse duration (t) ranges of 1-31 mW and 10-460 ns, respectively, with subsequent detection of the responsive signals reflected from the film surface. We also evaluated the material characteristics, such as optical absorption and energy gap, crystalline phases, and sheet resistance of as-deposited and annealed films. The result of experiments showed that the thermal stability of the Ge-Se-Te film is largely improved by adding Se.

  • In this paper, heat transfer characteristics of pulsating heat pipes are investigated with the diameter and the number of tubes through the computational analysis of thermal flow. The numerical simulation includes the phase change precess with VOF model using OpenFOAM software. The numerical code is modified for the phase change to occur with saturation temperature. The numerical results are compared with the previous ones to validate the present code. The resonable results have been obtained based on the mass transfer time relaxation parameter considering the density ratio. When the ratio of length to diameter and the number of tubes are on the decrease, the thermal resistances also tends to decrease in the pulsating heat pipes. These numerical results will supply the base line data to design and to manufacture the pulsating heat pipe.

  • This study was aimed at developing a low cost cold storage system for agricultural products. Three kinds of slurries: $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries were developed using phase change materials (PCMs) such as tetradecane, octadecane, and sodium polyacrylate to maintain the desired temperature ranges. The slurries were manufactured by in-situ polymerization. Tetradecane and octadecane were capsulated in a core with melamine at the surface. The thermodynamic characteristics of the slurries were measured and analyzed. The latent heats of the $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries at the melting points were 206.41, 186.88, and 147.91 kJ/kg, respectively. A transportable cold storage container was built to investigate the performance of the slurries as thermal storage media. The temperatures at the insides of the container could be maintained in the ranges of 0-5, 5-10, and $10-15^{\circ}C$ for more than 23, 27, and 60 hr with the $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ slurries, respectively.

  • In this study, we conducted analysis of bubble dynamics and flow of liquid phase change material(PCM) using shadowgraphy and particle image velocimetry(PIV). Characteristics of internal flow varied depending on locations of injection when solid PCM was liquefied from heated vertical wall. When bubbles rose immediately, they exhibited elliptical shape and zigzag trajectory. In contrast, when bubbles rose after merging at the bottom of solid PCM, with equivalent diameter for the inter-wall distance of 0.64 or greater, they showed a jellyfish shape and strong rocking behavior. It was observed by the PIV that the small ellipse bubbles made most strong flow inside the liquid PCM. Furthermore, the flow velocity was highest in the case of front injection, as the directions of temperature gradients and bubble-driven flow were aligned. The results underscore the significant influence of injection location on various characteristics, including bubble size, shape, rising path of bubbles, and internal flow.

  • A new micro actuation concept is introduced and studied in this paper. This idea is based on the thermo-pneumatic actuation principle. In order to improve the performance of a conventional thermo-pneumatic actuator, the idea of bistable buckling is added. By using a membrane which has the bistable buckling characteristics, the working pressure difference can be increased and as a result the work output can be increased. The analysis model for each phenomenon, bistable buckling and phase change, are suggested and the each model is verified with experimental data. From the comparison of the theoretical prediction with the experimental results, it can be concluded that these models are useful for such micro actuator analysis.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of supercooling repression on the clathrate compound by adding additives. For this purpose, phase change temperature and supercooling were measured when additives added to TMA30wt% clathrate for heat source temperature of $-6^{\circ}C$. The experimental results show that the phase change temperature with the chloroform of 0.1wt% is higher by $0.3^{\circ}C$ than TMA30wt% and the supercooling with the surfactant 0.1wt% is reduced by $9.2^{\circ}C$.
