  • Compressed natural gas has a high octane number and low particulate emission characteristics as compared with petroleum-based fuels, so it can respond to exhaust gas regulations positively. A natural gas engine has been introduced to improve the quality of the atmosphere, a diversity of fuel, a stable supply, and it has widely been used in city buses and garbage trucks. Recently, the natural gas engine has received attention by overcoming the disadvantage of the theoretical air-fuel ratio method through the development of EGR cooler and engine parts with the development of LP-EGR technology. In this study, we try to develop the cogeneration system that can simultaneously generate electric power and heat by remodeling the gasoline engine to the mixer type CNG engine. As a result, it was able to reduce the NOx (approximately 77%) compared to the diesel engines with same displacement.

  • Petroleum products are composed of various types of hydrocarbon compounds. Like other types of liquids, they presented the variation of density and volume according to temperature change. The method of measuring the density of petroleum products in a liquid phase is based on experimental data obtained mainly for each fractionally distilled petroleum product. In this study, the density and volume changes of kerosene and automotive diesel according to temperature change were measured and the property of change were analyzed. The conversion values were calculated using the density volume conversion table proposed by international standard ASTM. In addition, we analyzed the differences between the reference values and the measured values for the temperature changes specified in the domestic metering law.

  • Major countries have tighten their NOx regulation of diesel passenger cars. In the case of the EU, the regulation has been toughen up to 6.25 times since 2000. Despite the regulation the NOx concentration of the ambient has not been reduced proportionally. Futhermore, some manufacturers were disclosed using a defeat device for meeting the regulation illegally. As these issues, to reduce NOx emission practically, Korea and the EU introduced the real-world driving emission(RDE) regulation and the test method that will be applied after 2017. Also, the US has used the test equipment(PEMS) to detect a defeat device. In this paper, for the regulation to make a soft landing in Korea, 4 diesel passenger cars which met Euro 6a~6b regulation and were equipped with LNT/SCR were tested at a chassis dynamometer with environmental chamber applying the off-cycles(FTP, US06, SC03, HWFET and CADC) and several ambient condition(-7 and $14^{\circ}C$) as well as certification mode(NEDC, WLTC@ $23^{\circ}C$). The result of the test showed that the ambient temp. and the engine load as a test mode impacted the NOx emission of the cars while the vehicles with SCR emitted NOx lower than with LNT. Additionally, to propose an effective RDE test method, the above result was compared with the results of the other papers which tested RDE using the same cars.

  • GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel produced by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen ($H_2$) is expected to be one of the environmental friendly biomass based alternatives and blended to petrodiesel. In this study, the characteristic of the fuel was analyzed by its concentration differences after blending petrodiesel in domestic market with different amounts of GTL fuel which produced from Shell. Gas chromatography shows that GTL fuel consists of longer paraffin chain than common diesel. GTL fuel showed a high flash point, distillation, kinematic viscosity, and derived cetane number. In addition, GTL fuel showed lower lubricity due to low sulfur content.

  • Effect of electron accepters on anaerobic degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons by an anaerobic sludge taken from a sludge digestion tank in a soil artificially contaminated with 10,000 mg/kg soil of diesel fuel was tested. Treatments of soil with 30 mL of the digestion sludge (2,000 mg/L of vss (volatile suspended solids)) were incubated under several anaerobic conditions including nitrate reducing, sulfate reducing, methanogenic, and mixed electron accepters conditions for 120 days. Treatments with the digested sludge showed significant degradation of diesel fuel under all anaerobic conditions compare to control treatments with an autoclaved sludge and without the sludge. The amount of TPH degradation after 120days incubation was the largest in the treatment with the sludge and mixed electron accepters (75% removal of TPH) followed in order by sulfate reducing, nitrate reducing, methanegenic condition as 67%, 53%, 43%, respectively. However, the rate of TPH degradation in the nitrate- and sulfate reducing condition within 105 days were comparable with that of the mixed electron accepters condition. Microorganisms in each electron acceptor condition were plated on solid mediums containing nitrate or sulfate as sole electron acceptor and several nitrate- and sulfate reducing bacteria showed effective degradation of diesel fuel within 30 days incubations. These results suggest that anaerobic degradation of diesel fuel in soil with digested sludge is effective for practical remediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.

  • Biodiesel has very similar physical properties (density, kinematic viscosity) and has even higher cetane number compare with conventional diesel. There are no necessity to change or modify the infra-structure & engine system. It is known that fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) is oxygen-contained components increasing the combustibility, biodegradability and reduced the exhaust harmful gas. These things made the biodiesel more popular as an alternative diesel fuel. But biodiesel's sources are controversial issues about $CO_2$ reduction effect at this time because those mainly come from edible plants such as soy, palm, rapeseed already spent lot of $CO_2$ to cultivate. Whereas micro-algae is focused because they are inedible and has rapid growth rates & high carbon-dioxide adsorption rate per area. In this study, we analyze the each FAME components using $GC{\times}GC$-TOFMS in stead of GC-FID and verify the previous total FAME contents method's applicability through the micro algal biodiesel derived from Dunaliella tertiolecta.

  • Diesel, a kind of petroleum, which is used in vehicles, vessels, boilers etc causes great damage when a fire happens, because it has higher caloric value than gasoline or kerosene has at burning. Therefore, pool fire experiment was carried using diesel which is sold on the gas station and radiation heat flux that occurs from flame and inner temperature of flame at burning was estimated. The maximum instantaneous flame temperature of diesel was more than $900^{\circ}C$, and the average of maximum flame temperature was $800^{\circ}C$ which occurred at 0.5 H/D distance from the surface of inflammable liquid, the distance has more long that has the lower the temperature of flame. In case of radiation heat flux, it grew to vary according to the size and amount of sample. When the size of a container for experiment was 0.5 m and sample layer was 13 mm and 20 mm, the radiant heat was 92.29 kW and 117.43 kW each. When the container was 1.0 m, it was 364.35 kW and 405.88 kW each.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of compression ratio on engine performance in a LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine converted from a diesel engine. In ordor to determine the ideal compression ratio, a variable compression ratio 4-cylinder engine was developed. Retrofitting a diesel engine into a LPG engine is technically very complicated compared to a gasoline to LPG conversion. The cylinder head and the piston crown were modified to bum LPG in the engine. Compression ratios were increased from 8 to 10 in an increment of 0.5, the ignition timing was controlled to be at MBT(Minimum Spark Advance for Best Torque) for each case.

  • Dimethyl ether (DME) has a high cetane number that is suitable for diesel fuel. DME does not contain sulfur or nitrogen, and is an oxygenated fuel so it produces no particulate matter when combusted and is environmentally friendly. DME fuel for diesel engines show excellent material properties such as a lower volumetric heating value, lower boiling point, lower lubricity, and stronger solvent effect than light oil. This study experimentally examined a lubricity improver (LI) for dimethyl ether. A diesel LI based on biodiesel and fatty acid methyl ester was tested among DME LI candidates. The long-term storage stability and physical properties of the optimum LI for DME were determined.

  • Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of the most promising technologies for converting biomass to liquid fuels. The pyrolysis oil, also known as the bio crude oil (BCO), have been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of BCO in diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the BCO. One of the easiest way to adopt BCO to diesel engine without modifications is the use of BCO/diesel emulsions. In this study, a diesel engine operated with diesel, bio diesel (BD), and BCO/diesel emulsion was experimentally investigated. Performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled by BCO/diesel emulsion were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible with emulsion and engine output power was comparable to diesel and bio diesel operation. Long term validation of adopting BCO in diesel engine is still needed because the oil is acid, with consequent problems of corrosion especially in the injection system.
