  • This paper presents a new generic Petri net model for design and performance evaluation of a flexible assembly system with dual kanban. The architectural design of the model is derived from a generic bill of materials and the combination of FMS and FAS concepts. Two approaches for analysis and performance evaluation of the new model base on the theory of invariant analysis and linear programming are also introduced. Finally, the effect of different processing times between FMS-FAS on the number of kanban cards is investigated.

  • A flexible robotic assembly cell is modeled using Petri net. A simulator is developed and used to predict the optimal status of the system. The assembly cell of flexible manufacturing system(FMS) pilot plant of Automation and Systems Research Institute(ASRI) in Seoul National University is modeled. The system consists of 3 robots, 4 conveyors, automatic guided vehicle(AGV) and auto-stacker. The simulator is programmed in Turbo C on IBM PC, supporting a simple graphic simulation with pull-down menu. The flexibility of the assembly cell in the FMS plant is guaranteed, since it is possible to predict the optimal status of the system using this simulator.

  • Since FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) such as semiconductor production systems have the characteristic that each device has to be commonly used in several stages, it is difficult to find an optimal solution. In this paper, we proposed the new algorithm which can get the optimal ratio of sharing resources. We will implement the proposed algorithm to semiconductor production systems. We introduce the optimal algorithm, which is modeled and analyzed by ExSpect, a petri net based simulation tool. When there exist conflicts of sharing resources, the scheduling method is adopted, which gives a priority to the most preceded process. The suggested algorithm can be used not only in semiconductor production systems but also in various FMS.

  • In this paper, we propose a hierarchical motion controller with stand-alone vision system to enhance the flexibility of the robot soccer system. In addition, we simplified the model of dynamic environments of the robot using petri-net and simple state diagram. Based on the proposed model, we designed the robot soccer system with velocity and position controller that includes 4-level hierarchically structured controller. Some experimental results using the stand-alone vision system from host system show improvement of the controller performance by reducing processing time of vision algorithm.

  • If a machine has some faults, we can detect them using vibration or noise signals. However some maintenance engineers who don\`t have export knowledge, need the help of vibration experts for diagnosing the machine. In this paper a case based reasoning (CBR) system is developed which is able to manipulate the past experiences of vibration diagnosis experts. In the CBR system, the maintenance engineers can retrieve the information form previous cases which are most similar to new problem s that they can solve new problem using solutions form the previous cases. In this paper, a new case retrieval method of CBR system using Petri net is proposed and also applied to diagnosis for electric motors as a practical problem.

  • We discuss scheduling analysis for a discrete event system with time windows of which firing or holding time delays are subject to random variation within some finite range. To do this, we propose a modified p-lime Petri net, named p+-time Petri net. We develop a condition for which a synchronized transition does not have a dead token, that is, the firing epochs do not violate the time window constraints. We propose a method of computing the feasible range of the token sojourn time at each place based on a time difference graph. We also discuss an application for analyzing wafer residency times within the process chambers for a dual-armed cluster tool for chemical vapor deposition.

  • The ladder diagram (LD) for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) ar responsible for much important roles in advance industrial automation. As automated systems become more complex the design procedures of the system become more difficult as well. Hence. the design automation issues based on discrete event models(DEMs) are receiving more attention. One of the popular ways of tackling these problems is employing Petri nets. In this paper, we use the modified automation Petri net(MAPN) to model the manufacturing system and the modified token passing logic (MTPL) method conversion (ECC) algorithm based on the MAPN and the MTPL Finally, an example of the manufacturing system is provided to illustrate the proposed ECC algorithm.

  • The modem production systems are required to produce many items. This is due to the fact that society has become more complex and the customers' demands have become more varied. The demand for complex production systems of various purposes, which can flexibly change the content of work, has increased. One of such production systems is FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System). Limited resources must be used in FMS when a number of working procedures are simultaneously being undertaken because the conditions of stand-by job processes cannot be changed. Researchers are currently being conducted to determine ways of preventing deadlocks. In this study, we proposes the algorithm for detection and recovery of a deadlock status using the DDAPN(Deadlock Detection Avoidance Petri Net). Also, we apply the proposed algorithm has a feature to the FMS.

  • Manufacturing companies must possess a new type of production system with characteristics of reconfigurability, reusability and scalability (Dove 1995), i.e. an agile manufacturing system. Such system will allow flexibility not only in producing a variety of part, but also in changing the system itself, which is a difference form flexible manufacturing systems. A fundamental early step in the reconfiguring process for agile manufacturing system is to develop a model that adequately describes the proposed systems, in order to be able to study and evaluate the impact of the reconfiguring decision on the system performance, before its construction. Therefore, in this paper, an Object & Knowledge-based Interval Timed Petri-Net (OKITPN) approach is proposed.
