  • This study was performed to investigate the cultivation pattern and perception, such as safety awareness, of environmentally-friendly organic materials among Korean farmers. The main reason for participation of the environmentally-friendly agriculture was for the production of safe agricultural crops. Compared to small-acreage farmer were more aware about the safety of environmentally-friendly organic materials to the subjects. Accordingly, 23.6% among the respondents with environmentally-friendly agriculture certification experienced the adverse effect by using the environmentally-friendly organic materials, compared to 33.8% of among the respondent without the certification. The experienced type of adverse effects consisted mainly 'eyes itch', 'hands and feet itch' and 'fatigue'. Also, respondent experiencing the adverse effects by using the environmentally-friendly organic materials more comply with the usage standard as how to use marked in wrapping paper, compared to the respondent without experiencing the adverse effects, which indicate that the compliance with the usage standard as how to use marked in wrapping paper is closely related the experience the adverse effects. Further study should be needed for more precise investigation of comment for the farmers in order to suggest the effective improvement in terms of policy or education for their safety.

  • Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and portomesenteric venous gas are uncommon radiological findings, but are found commonly in cases of bowel ischemia, or as a result of various non-ischemic conditions. A 72-year-old man visited an emergency center with altered mental status 2 hours after ingestion of an unknown pesticide. On physical examination, he showed the characteristic hydrocarbon or garlic-like odor, miotic pupils with no response to light, rhinorrhea, shallow respiration, bronchorrhea, and sweating over his face, chest and abdomen. Laboratory results revealed decreased serum cholinesterase, as well as elevated amylase and lipase level. We made the clinical diagnosis of organophosphate poisoning in this patient based on the clinical features, duration of symptoms and signs, and level of serum cholinesterase. Activated charcoal, fluid, and antidotes were administered after gastric lavage. A computerized tomography scan of the abdomen with intravenous contrast showed acute pancreatitis, poor enhancement of the small bowel, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, portomesenteric venous gas and ascites. Emergent laparotomy could not be performed because of his poor physical condition and refusal of treatment by his family. The possible mechanisms were believed to be direct intestinal mucosal damage by pancreatic enzymes and secondary mucosal disruption due to bowel ischemia caused by shock and the use of inotropics. Physicians should be warned about the possibility of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and portomesenteric venous gas as a complication of pancreatitis following anticholinesterase poisoning.

  • Two experiments were carried out in greenhouse under hydrophilic culture facilities and simulation model to provide residual characteristics of ethoprophos treated in sweet pepper's growth. To identify the pattern of absorption-translocation through the plant roots, ethoph 5 % GR were diluted in hydrophilic culture solution and drenched at a time per day for three days. The residue in fruit came closed to 0.02 ppm of MRL at 10 days after treatment(DAT) and reached peaked 0.06 ppm at 30 DAT and remained excess MRL level until around 40 DAT. To confirm the pattern of contamination by volatilization of ethoprophos, ethoph 5%GR was scattered 2 g per cubic meter. At 72 hours after treatment, the residue in sweet pepper fruit was exceed the MRL and the maximum residual amount were 0.62 ppm by volatilization. Consequently the use of ethoprophos during the growth of sweet pepper would be strong possibility to exceed the MRL.

  • Some phenomena in which insects can demonstrate environmental changes by xenobiotics are easily and simply evaluated. On this regard, general guidelines for environmental studies using insects as biomarkers which determine the effects of such changes are suggested. Insects include three-quaters of all living animal species. This diversity comprises many closely related species which may respond sole to environmental changes by xenobiotics. Insects have been used for assessing adverse effects of environmental changes by xenobiotics, especially pesticides. Collembolan species are widely used as physiological and behavioral biomarkers for the assessment of adverse effects caused by pesticides on soil environment. This review aims to evaluate tile possible use of Korean Collembolan species based upon their response to environmental changes in Korean soil mainly caused by pesticides for crop protection.

  • Effects of 9 acaricides to the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus were evaluated. Seven of the acaricides tested, cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen exhibited low toxicity to adult females and nymphs of N. californicus and had little effect on the reproduction and eclosion of eggs deposited by treated predators. Moreover, hatch percentage of N. californicus eggs was unaffected by exposure to these seven acaricides. Etoxazole did not significantly affect the survival and reproduction of adult female predators but caused very low eclosion in eggs laid by treated females and high egg mortality. Pyraclofos was extremely toxic to adult female predators and caused 100% mortality. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites treated with cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen and their fecundity was not substantially affected. Based on the results, cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen are appeared to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management program where N. californicus is the major natural enemy.

  • Dissipation constants and half-lives of acaricides etoxazole and flufenoxuron in apples were calculated to establish their pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs). The acaricides were sprayed on apples with single and triple doses based on safe use guidelines, and their residual patterns in the apple were interpreted using first order kinetics equation. The residual amounts of acaricides during the experimental period were below their maximum residue limits (MRL) for apple. The dissipation constants of acaricides in the apples were calculated at 0.0788 for etoxazole and 0.0319 for flufenoxuron corresponding to their biological half-lives; 8.8~21.7 days for etoxazole and 21.7~23.1 days for flufenoxuron. The PHRLs of acaricides in the apple showed the residual amounts of etoxazole and flufenoxuron at the harvesting date would be below their MRLs if their residual amounts were less than 0.87 and 0.88 mg/kg, respectively, at 7 days prior to harvesting the apples.

  • The use of chemical products to enhance and improve life is a widespread worldwide practice. In spite of the benefits of these products, there is the potential of chemicals for adverse effects to people or the environment. The globally harmonized system (GHS) of classifying and labeling chemicals that was recommended by the United Nations in 2003, has been introduced globally since 2008. Compare to the classification criteria of agricultural formulations today, classification criteria of GHS is different partly. One pictogram is removed and 3 pictograms are introduced newly. The classification criteria of GHS will be changed preferentially and implemented gradationally to hazard products.

  • Sea water samples collected in August, 1994 from 20 stations in the Kwangyang Bay were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) to investigate persistence and distribution pattern of four organophosphorus pesticides (DDVP, Diazinon, IBP, EDDP). Except for IBP, the contamination by DDVP, Diazinon, and EDDP in marine aquatic environment in Korea has not been reported previously. In this study, however, all these four pesticides were detected in all stations (except DDVP) and their concentrations were in ng/L level. The concentrations ranged from detection limit to 15.3ng/L for DDVP, 1.8-27.7ng/L for Diazinon, 7.3-63.5ng/L for IBP, and 22.2-1100.1ng/L for EDDP. It is noteworthy that the measured concentrations of IBP and EDDP in this study would be much lower than usual, since the use of IBP and EDDP was less than 50% of average annual consumption due to unusually dry and hot weather condition in the summer of 1994. It was very surprising to find that the highest concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides were observed at stations near Daesa Streamlet instead of Seomjin River, which has more point source of the pesticides. This result suggests that the small river discharge during heavy ram period in summer can give harmful effect on marine biota (both wild and aqua-cultured) with its organophosphorus pesticide residue, despite of their short residence time in aquatic environment. In order to protect the marine life properly from acute toxicity of the organophosphorus pesticides, it needs to be emphasized that monitoring the level of agricultural pesticides in river run-off should be done during active consumption period rather at regular intervals.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate domestic pesticides on their mutagenecity through a literature review on mutagenecities of chemical compounds : and to report the results of experimental tests on the mutagenecity of other pesticides for which mutagenecity had not been previously demonstrated. For the experiments on mutagenecity, Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100 was performed. Subjects of this research were 167 kinds of pesticides utilized in Korea during the last 10 years from 1973 to 1982. The results were as follows : 1) The total amount of pesticide which was consumed in Korea during the past ten years(1973-1982) was 113,038tons. The average ingredient amount utilized per hectare of areble land in 1982 was 6.6kg. 2) Among mutagenic pesticides, it was found that there were 11 kinds of insecticides, 6 kinds of fungicides and 3 kinds of herbicides. The total amount of these mutagenic pesticide used during the past 10 years is as follows: 8,911 tons of insecticides; 2,708tons of fungicides; and 14,087 tons of herbicides. 3) For the regulation and restriction on the use of toxic pesticides, the mutagenecities of ingredient chemicals should be considered. 4) The three kinds of herbicides and two kinds of growth regulators whose mutagenecity was not mentioned in the literature review, were all found to be negative in the mutagenecity test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100.

  • Hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-leucine (Hip-L-His-L-Leu, HHL) is the known substrate of ACE, which used often in inhibition kinetic study to design new inhibitor. Here we use HHL molecule as a template to predict pharmacophore which can interact with residues in active site of AnCE, new potential insecticide target protein. To explain physicochemical properties related to molecular geometry and conformational change in reaction field as well as electron density of atoms associated to pharmacophores, geometry optimization, NMR chemical shifts and natural population analysis were performed by ab initio and DFT method. Calculated NMR chemical shifts showed good agreement with the experimental ones and obtained electron densities were used for analyzing pharmacophores of corresponding atoms. Finally, we could extract aye pharmacophores related to hydrophobic aliphatic and aromatic site, hydrogen bonding donor and acceptor site and Zn binding site from the HHL molecule.
