Dermal Exposure Associated with Occupational End Use of Pesticides and the Role of Protective Measures

  • Background: Occupational end users of pesticides may experience bodily absorption of the pesticide products they use, risking possible health effects. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers working in the field of agricultural health or other areas where occupational end use of pesticides and exposure issues are of interest. Methods: This paper characterizes the health effects of pesticide exposure, jobs associated with pesticide use, pesticide-related tasks, absorption of pesticides through the skin, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for reducing exposure. Conclusions: Although international and national efforts to reduce pesticide exposure through regulatory means should continue, it is difficult in the agricultural sector to implement engineering or system controls. It is clear that use of PPE does reduce dermal pesticide exposure but compliance among the majority of occupationally exposed pesticide end users appears to be poor. More research is needed on higher-order controls to reduce pesticide exposure and to understand the reasons for poor compliance with PPE and identify effective training methods.

농촌 여성의 농약 사용에 따른 혈액성분과 영양소 섭취에 관한 연구 (The Monitoring for the Effects of Pesticide Exposure on Plasma Components and Nutrient Intakes in Female Agricultural Workers)

  • Since 1982, female agricultural workers are populous than male in Korea. Previous study was suggested that female workers are more sensitive to the agricultural medicine poisoning than male. This study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the impact on plasma components and nutrient intakes in female agricultural workers by the use of pesticides. Data were obtained from 44 females residing in Wonjoo, Kangwon-do area. Analysis for the general characteristics, nutrient intakes, and plasma components of the subjects were performed by physical examination, 24-hour recall method and venous blood sampling. They were divided into 3 groups according to the degree of the pesticide use: 8 in none(Non-expose group), 14 in low(<4/yr)(Low-expose group), and 22 in high$({\geq}4/yr)$(High-expose group). The results are summarized as follows. Serum glucose, SGOT, SGPT, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol did not correlated with pesticide use and were not different among the groups. But serum total cholesterol was higher in pesticide use group. With increasing the number of pesticide use times, leukocyte count was tended to increased. Eighty two percent of the subjects were hemoglobin less than or equal to 12g/dl. Hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, serum Fe, Serum ferritin belonged to normal range and did not correlated with pesticide use. Intake of energy, Fe, vitamin $B_2$ were lower than RDA. Fe, K, and vitamin A intake were higher in don't use group than the other groups. There are not many differences according to using the pesticide in anthropometric measurements, nutrient intakes, and blood components, except for serum total cholesterol level and some nutrients intake. But these results suggest the need the systemic researches about the effects the pesticide using on nutritional status in Korean agricultural workers.

Health Risk of Potato Farmers Exposed to Overuse of Chemical Pesticides in Iran

  • Background: Potato is the main crop of Ardabil Plain (accounting for one-fifth of potato production in Iran). Its health hazard risk to farmers is rising due to the increasing rate of pesticide use. The present study analyzes potato farmers' health hazard risk in the use of chemical pesticides. Methods: The rate of pesticide use by farmers (n = 370) was first compared with the recommended dosage (on pesticide label). Then, a composite index was employed to estimate the health hazard risk of farmers during pesticide use, and the variables accounting for pesticide overuse and nonoveruse were analyzed. Safety behavior was examined in four steps, namely of pesticide purchase and storage, preparation, application, and postapplication. Results: It was found that 74.6 percent of potato farmers used pesticides in higher concentrations than the recommended dosage. The higher average rate of pesticide use versus recommendation (label instruction) was related to Chlorpyrifos and Trifluralin, and the highest average health hazard risk among farmers was related to the use of Chlorpyrifos and Metribuzin. Farmers with a higher risk of health hazard displayed much lower safety behavior than the other farmers at all steps of pesticide use. Conclusion: The most important variables discriminating the health hazard risk of farmers' overuse included health behavior identity, attitude, knowledge and awareness, and cues to action. Therefore, using social media, holding local exhibitions, and engaging local leaders and skilled farmers in the region to improve farmers' attitudes and health behavior identity toward the dangers of chemical pesticides can play a significant role in motivating farmers' display of overuse preventive behaviors.

농약의 마이너 사용에 대한 국내외 관리 및 규제 현황 (Management and Regulation on the Minor Use of Pesticides in Korea and Foreign Countries)

  • 농약의 마이너 사용 이슈는 국내에서 뿐만 아니라 외국에서 그리고 국제적으로도 그 해결책이 요구되고 있다. 더 나아가 마이너 사용에 대한 정의가 나라마다 다르고, 또 주요 작물(major crop)과 마이너 작물(minor crop)이냐에 따라 농약 사용 등록 및 규제에 차이가 있게 되므로 농약 관리에서의 어려움이 가중된다. 여기에서는 마이너 사용에 대한 정의, 국내외 마이너 사용 프로그램, 마이너 사용 등록 장려 방안 등에 관한 정보를 제공함으로써 국내 마이너 사용 이슈를 해결하는 데 도움이 되고자 하였다. 그리고 결론적으로 다음의 두 가지 내용을 제안한다. 첫째로 국내에서 법적으로 마이너 사용을 정의하는 데 신중함이 필요하며 그 정의에는 소면적 재배 작물뿐만 아니라 그 외 마이너 사용에 대한 모든 상황들이 포함되도록 한다. 그리고 둘째로 현재 실시하는 소면적 재배작물의 직권시험을 기반으로 한 더 강력한 마이너 사용 프로그램이 구축될 필요가 있다. OECD 지침에서 제시한 바와 같이 미국의 IR-4 Project와 같은 협력 프로그램을 도입한다면 농약 마이너 사용 프로그램을 보다 더 효과적으로 운영할 수 있게 될 것이다.

Association between Pesticide Use and Cholangiocarcinoma

  • Background: Thailand remains a primarily agricultural country and Thai farmers are heavy users of pesticides. Coincidentally the incidence of cholangio carcinoma (CCA) is high in parts of the country, but no previous study has examined any association between the two. Materials and Methods: The present matched, case-control study covered patients admitted to Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. The case group comprised 210 cases diagnosed with CCA and the control group 840 diagnosed with other diseases. Cases and controls were matched for sex, age within five years, and date of admission within three months. Multiple conditional logistic regression was used for the analysis. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, pesticide use as compared with never used pesticide was not associated with CCA (ORadj=1.11, 95% CI: 0.77, 1.60) and neither was there any significant relationship between CCA and duration of pesticide use, type or number of types pesticide use. Conclusions: The current study thus found no association between pesticide use and CCA.

  • The registration of a pesticide for use in the gardens or a farmer's field requires assessment of the potential negative effects of that pesticide on human health. To anticipate how a pesticide might impact human health, laboratory animals such as mice and rats are exposed to varying dosages in their foods -from very minimal to extremely high levels. Toxicologists then evaluate the observable effect(s) of consuming known quantities of that specific pesticide on acute, subchronic, chronic, mutational, reproduction and neurological effects. Information gained from such test is evaluated by toxicologists and medical experts to determine potential human effects

  • Increasing Public Concern : Pesticide residue is probably one of the fastest growing problems in regard to environmental contamination. Pesticide use in agriculture in this century has produced certain benefits, including a decrease in crop waste and an increase in crop yields and food quality. However, pesticide use also creates problems of having effects on the environment and remaining in food chain. The presence of pesticide residue in food, water, and soil has aroused public concern over potential health hazards. Despite information provided by national and private level agencies suggesting that food is safe, consumer groups worldwide are demanding assurance as to the safely of agricultural products.

농약등록기준 준수 현황과 수도 및 엽채소류 사용량 조사 (Survey on Compliance of Pesticide Registration Standard and Pesticide Usage of Paddy Rice and Leaf Vegetables in Korea)

  • 농약 등록 후에 농업 생산 현장에서 사용되는 농약에 대한 사용실태 및 작물별 단위면적당 사용량을 조사하기 위하여 2003년부터 2004년까지 작물별 주산단지별, 재배면적을 감안하여 292명의 농가를 선정하여 조사하였다. 농약안전사용기준 준수사항은 벼, 엽채소류 재배농가 모두가 대체적으로 잘 지키고 있었다. 조사농민의 대부분은 농약의 선택정보와 구매결정은 시판상이나 농협판매담당자의 권고에 의하여 결정하고 있었다. 작물별 단위면적당 농약사용량은 벼 5.51 kg $ha^{-1}$, 노지배추 3.91 kg $ha^{-1}$, 시설배추 2.93 kg $ha^{-1}$, 상추 0.76 kg $ha^{-1}$, 시금치 0.55 kg $ha^{-1}$, 잎들깨 1.34 kg $ha^{-1}$, 부추 4.83 kg $ha^{-1}$, 열무 0.42 kg $ha^{-1}$로 조사되었다. 벼, 상추, 시금치, 잎들깨에서는 사용량이 4년 전에 비해 감소하였으나 배추는 농약사용량이 증가하였다.

강원도 인삼재배지 농약 사용 실태 (Survey on Pesticide Use by Ginseng Growers at Gangwon Farmland in Korea)

  • 본 연구는 강원도내의 4개시 8개군에 거주하는 271명의 인삼 재배자들을 대상으로 36문항의 설문지를 이용하여 강원도 인삼 재배지의 농약사용 실태를 조사하였으며, 얻어진 결과는 빈도 및 교차 통계분석을 하였다. 설문조사 대상자들은 강원도 인삼 재배지에 문제가 되는 식물병으로 점무늬병, 탄저병, 잿빛곰팡이병, 뿌리썩음병, 균핵병, 해충은 달팽이, 줄기 굴파리, 굼벵이, 선충, 거세미나방, 잡초는 망추 바랭이, 명아주, 피, 쑥 등을 선정하였다. 이를 방제하기 위하여 응답자의 35%는 농약에 의존한다고 하였으며, 31.5%는 농약사용뿐만 아니라 해충의 천적과 미생물 이용 및 친환경자재 등을 혼용하는 것으로 조사되었다. 전체 응답자의 78.8%가 본인의 경험, 농약상 및 이웃의 추천 등으로 농약을 선정하고 있었으며, 이의 결과로 강원도 인삼 재배지에서 미적용 약제를 사용하는 문제점을 안고 있었다. 농약 살포 시 기준량을 준수하는 것으로 조사되었으며(96.3%), 이것은 낮은 비율의 인삼약해(30.1%)와 살포자 중독 경험(38.8%)을 초래하는 것으로 판단되었다. 그러나 사용 농약을 2년에서 5년간 연용하고 있어(44.1%) 이 지역 병해충 및 잡초의 약제 저항성 유발가능성이 높아 이에 대한 연구가 요구되고 있으며, 올바른 농약 선정 및 사용법에 대한 교육프로그램이 개발되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.

소규모 농가에서의 농약의 사용 행태 및 방제복 착용현황에 대한 조사 (Current Attitudes of Pesticide Use and Protective Clothing in Smallholder Farmers of Korea)

  • This survey was carried out on 256 smallholder farmers of the Jeonbuk Province to analyze their current behavior in pesticide usage and the use of protective clothing during spray work. The interviewees were at the age of about 50's in both males and females: they performed spray work mainly for their own farms. Many of them were not very well aware of the danger of pesticides and the adequate methods of pesticide handling. Water drinking and smoking during break time were the endangering factors of pesticide intoxication, reaching to 30-60% sprayers. Most of sprayers had experienced the exposures to pesticides during spray work and appealed some subjective clinical symptoms to the exposure, but they seldom sought medical treatments. More than 70% of respondents had not been wearing protective equipments during spray work. The results will be used as basic information in designing the improved protective clothing more acceptable by pesticide sprayers.
