The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cleavages on indirect tensile strength (ITS) of the granite. Brazilian disc tests and ring tests with three different hole sizes were performed. 2D DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulation was employed to further understand the failure process during the tests and the mechanism behind. Results show that ITS decreases across hardway, grain and rift cleavage. Measured average ITS from ring tests is about 2.5 ~ 6.4 times of those measured from Brazilian disc tests, and it decreases with increasing ratio of diameters of inner hole and specimen. Failure pattern in ring tests is influenced by both hole size and relative positions of cleavages parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.

Two kind of $\beta$-SiC powders of different particle sizes (${\sim}1.7\;{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}30\;nm$), containing 7 wt% $Y_2O_3$, 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 1 wt% MgO as sintering additives, were prepared by hot pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under applied pressures, and then were hot-forged at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 6 h under 40 MPa in argon. All the hot-pressed specimens consisted of equiaxed grains and were developed grain growth after hot-forging. The smaller starting powder was developed the finer microstructure. The microstructures on the surfaces parallel and perpendicular to the pressing direction of the hot-forged SiC were similar to each other, and no texture development was observed because of the lack of massive $\beta$ to $\sigma$ phase transformation of SiC. The fracture toughness (${\sim}3.9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$), hardness (~ 25.2 GPa) and flexural strength (480 MPa) of hot-forged SiC using larger starting powder were higher than those of the other.

The objective of this study is to analyze the mechanical properties of plywood used as a thermal insulating material for LNG CCS (Liquefied Natural Gas, Cargo Containment System). It is created by bonding an odd number of parallel and perpendicular direction for preventing contraction and expansion of wood. Also plywood is widely used as LNG CCS insulating material because of its durability, light weight and high stiffness. Since LNG CCS is loaded with liquid cargo, the impact load by sloshing during operation and the wide temperature range (room temperature, low temperature, cryogenic temperature) exposed during loading, unloading should be considered. The thickness of the plywood which is used for the membrane type MARKIII was selected as the thickness of the test specimen. In this present study, plywood is analyzed by the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of plywood by temperature and grain direction. In addition, it is necessary to analyze the fracture shape and predict the fracture strain by using regression model because the critical load may cause cracks inside the tank, which may affect the leakage of cryogenic liquid.
The rotation of uniaxial anisotropy field of 700 ${\AA}$ thick sputtered NiFe thin film due to magnetic annealing was investigated. NiFe film was annealed in a magnetic field which is perpendicular to the initial induced uniaxial anisotropy field. The NiFe film becomes nearly isotropic after 1 hour annealing at 160 $^{\circ}C$. With increase of annealing temperature over 160 $^{\circ}C$, the film gets uniaxial anisotropy field again. An abrupt increase of H$\sub$c/ was observed with annealing temperature over 400 $^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction analysis and Auger electron spectroscopy with Ar ion etching showed extensive grain growth in NiFe film with (111) texturing and interdiffusion with adjacent Au electrode layer by 400 $^{\circ}C$ magnetic annealing.
Co-Zn ferrite thin films grown on thermally oxidized silicon wafers were fabricated by a sol-gel method. Magnetic and structural properties of Co-Zn thin films were investigated by using x-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Co-Zn ferrite thin films annealed at 400 $^{\circ}C$ presented have only a single phase spinel structure without any preferred crystallite orientation. Their surface roughness of Co-Zn ferrite thin films was shown as less than 3 nm and the grain size was about 40 nm for annealing temperatures over 600 $^{\circ}C$. A moderate saturation magnetization of Co-Zn ferrite thin films for recording media was obtained in this study and there is no significant difference of their magnetic property with those external fields of parallel and perpendicular to planes of the films. The maximum value of the coercivity was obtained as 1,900 Oe for Co-Zn ferrite thin film annealed at 600 $^{\circ}C$.
This study was carried out to investigate the physical and mechanical properties. durability of adhesive bond and paint film for the basic data which were required to determine the suitability as a raw material for furniture the laminated veneer lumber (LVL) with pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill). The results obtained were as follows; 1) The proper pressing time for making the LVL was over 45 second per milimeter of LVL thickness. 2) The bending strength of the LVL was lower than that of the solid wood but the compressive strength of the LVL was similar to that of the solid wood. The strength increased with the decrease of veneer thickness. 3) The impact bending absorbed energy of the LVL was 0 to 0.3 kg.m/$cm^2$ in the direction of parallel to the grain. The energy of the LVL was lower than that of the solid wood (0.68 kg.m/$cm^2$). 4) In warm water soaking and cold-dry tests, delamination of adhered layers surface crack, swelling, and color change were not found when the hot pressing time was over 45 second per milimeter of LVL thickness. As a result of soak under vacuum test shrinkage in the direction of parallel to the grain was about -1.0 percent and. was about 3.0 percent in the direction of the perpendicular to the grain. 6) The film cacks on the LVL's surface after the wet and cold-dry test were not found at all. 7) In the use of the LVL for interior decoration it was considered that the surface of the LVL be overlaid crossly with fancy veneers of birch and paulownia, etc. This cross overlayirg methods have resulted in few cracks on the fancy veneer.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of shelling ratio and resin content on the properties of bamboo oriented strand board (BOSB) from betung (Dendrocalamus asper) and to determine the correlation between the results of dynamic and static bending tests. Strands were steam-treated at $126^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under 0.14 MPa pressure and followed by washing with 1% NaOH solution. Three-layer BOSB with the core layer perpendicular to the surface was formed with shelling ratios (face:core ratio) of 30:70; 40:60; 50:50; 60:40 and binded with 7% and 8% of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin with the addition of 1% of wax. The evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of BOSB was conducted in accordance with the JIS A 5908:2003 standard and the results were compared with CSA 0437.0 standard for commercial OSB (Grade O-1). Non-destructive testing was conducted using Metriguard Model 239A Stress Wave Timer which has a wave propagation time from 1 to $9,999{\mu}s$ and a resolution of $1{\mu}s$. BOSB with 8% resin content showed better physical and mechanical properties than those with 7% resin content. The increase of the face layer ratio improved the strength of BOSB in parallel direction to the grain. The results suggested that shelling ratio of 50:50 could be used as a simple way to reduce PF resin requirements from 8% to 7% and to meet the requirements of CSA 0437.0 standard. The results of non-destructive and destructive tests showed a strong correlation, suggesting that non-destructive test can be used to estimate the bending properties of BOSB.
Recent progress in Martian exploration identified hematite as the major candidate for the strong magnetic anomalies observed in Martian lithosphere. In the present study, grain-size dependence of thermoremanent magnetization and low-temperature stability of room-temperature saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (RTSIRM) were monitored using synthetic hematites. For hematite, the antiferromagnetic spin configuration is re-arranged from being perpendicular to the c-axis to be parallel to the c-axis below the Morin transition ($=T_M$). A large fraction of RTSIRM is demagnetized at $T_M$ (= 260 K) during zero-field cooling from 300 K to 10 K. About 37% of the initial RTSIRM is recovered on warming from 10 K to 300 K. Shallow Martian subsurface at 1~2 km depth would experience low-temperature cooling-warming of $T_M$ because average Martian surficial temperature is about 220 K. However in most Martian lithosphere whose temperatures are higher than 260 K, the very stable magnetic memory of hematite could be a contributor to Martian magnetic anomalies.
The present study is aimed to investigate the relationship between the distribution of benthic macro fauna and environments in the Mangyung-dongjin tidal flat developed on the west coast of central korea. Samples were taken from 69 sites established on 8 transect lines running perpendicular to the coast. The 69 sites located in the range of -250 to 230 cm height from the mean sea level were categorized into 4 levels of exposure duration. The mean grain sizes of the surface sediments varied from 1.5 to $7.9{\varphi}$. Silty sands and sands were dominant sediment facies on the tidal flat. A total of 64 species of invertebrates was collected and the mean density was $1,335{\;}indiv{\cdot}\textrm{m}^2$. The dominant species was Laternula cf. limicola of Bivalvia (71% of total counts), followed by Umbonium thomasi of Gastropoda (22%), and Lingula anatina of Brachiopoda (2.6%). These 3 species comprised 95.5% of total individual number. The distribution of benthic animals was closely related with the duration of tidal exposure. Perinereis association was the characteristic for the most exposed area, and followed by Macrophthalmus and Bullacta-Mactra-Umbonium association along the degree of exposure duration.
This study was carried out to evaluate the structural property of double shear bolted connections in Korean Larch. For the main member, sawn lumber and Glulam were used in which thickness of lumber is 39 mm, 89 mm, 139 mm, 189 mm and Glulam 80 mm, 140 mm, 170 mm. For the side member, sawn lumber and steel plate were used in which thickness of lumber is the same of the main member and steel plate is 6mm. And connections were jointed by M12, M16, M20 bolts which were usually used for wood constructions in Korea. Directions of loading to connections were perpendicular and parallel to grain of main and side member. First, through the dowel bearing test, the dowel bearing strength was evaluated and through the bolt bending tests, the bolt bending strength was evaluated. And then experiments for the connection were performed. Obtained results from experiments were compared with calculated values by EYM and analyzed. Strength of double shear bolted connections in Korean Larch was similar or higher than calculated value by EYM. Especially when the side member was made by the sawn lumber, it was similar to the calculated value. In failure mode, the mode was effected by the knot and the dry defect. In the thin main member, it was shown mode I and as the thickness of the main member was thicker, it was changed into mode III.
