The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of rubble support media coated perlite and non-coated media. As rubble was coated perlite, the porocity of reactor was increased 5.6%, whereas packing weight was decreased 17.6%. When rubble was coated perlite, microorganisms were attached on the surface of support media after 2 hours. TCOD removal efficiency of the reactor packed with rubble support media coated perlite was higher 4~9% than that of rubble. The end of experiment, MLVSS of rubble support media and rubble coated perlite was 1858.8mg/ι, 2785.9mg/ι, respectively.
This study was conducted to examine the possibility of producing poinsettia with various growing media containing used perlite and rockwool slabs as medium components. Pot plants of Euphorbia pulcherrima 'Freedom Red' were grown in 10 media containing used perlite and particles of rockwool slabs at various ratios including 1:1 and 1:3 (v/v). Medium containing used perlite and peatmoss at 1:3 (v/v) was employed as the control treatment. Height, root length, length of the longest branch, number of roots, leaf area, and width and length of the largest bract of plants grown in media containing used perlite were significantly greater than those in the control. Stem diameter and bract count were not affected by the medium composition. From the results, used perlite and rockwool slabs were proved to be a practically useful materials as medium components for pot production of poinsettia plants.
This study investigated the applicability of horticultural media with recycled coir substrates the growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. Pekinensis) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) crop. The six different types of coir based substrates were A, Coir 45: Perlite 35: Vermiculite 12: Zeolite 8 (%), B, Coir 55: Perlite 25: Vermiculite 12: Zeolite 8 (%), C, Coir 65: Perlite 15: Vermiculite 12: Zeolite 8 (%), D, Coir 75: Perlite 5: Vermiculite 12: Zeolite 8 (%), E, Coir 85: Perlite 5: Vermiculite 5: Zeolite 5 (%) and F, nursery media (control). The pH and Electric conductivity of the horticultural nursery media were 6.06-7.00 and $0.45-1.10dS/m^{-1}$, respectively. The nursery media containing coir substrates had higher level of Total N, Ca, K, Mg and P than those without coir. Additionally, it was observed that the growth of Chinese cabbage was the best on D (containing 75% coir) while that of lettuce was the best on E (containing 85% coir). In general, when substrates containg a higher percentage of coir were used, the growth of Chinese cabbage and lettuce was ideal. Additionally, the P, Ca, and Mg content in both plants was not significantly altered by the amount of coir present in the media. However, with an increase in the amount of coir substrate, the chlorophyll, N, and K content was increased. After harvesting, there was no significant difference in the chemical properties of the horticultural nursery media of both plants. Thus, it can be suggested that, coir substrate after a single use could be recycled as horticulture nursery media.
The purpose of this research was to develop ideal substrates for the production of good quality tomatoes in bag culture system and also to improve media with low or no environmental pollution by blending and mixing artificial substrate including peatmoss, perlite, vermiculite, granular rockwool, polyphenol resin foam, bark, and smoked rice hull. The highly efficient media proved by experiments were vermiculite, smoked rice hull, polyphenol resin foam, granular rockwool, and perlite, which showed good results in the early growth as well as the marketable yield of tomato in the bag culture. Tomato plants grown in the media mixed with peatmoss, vermiculite and granular rockwool at the ratio of 3 : 1 : 1(by volume) showed the highest marketable yield, and the next at the ratio of 2 : 1 : 1. The perlite-granular rockwool mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 1 : 4, and the peatmoss vermiculite mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 3 : 2, seemed to be promising media for bag culture.

Growing plant in potting media without soil is known as Soilless cultivation. This method is used mostly in greenhouse cultivation to increase horticultural commodities production. Peat moss is commonly utilized as potting media substrate because of its characteristic. However, peat moss price is high because of the quantity of peat moss in nature has been decreased. Recently, most of the research is conducted to find the alternative growing medium to cultivate horticulture plant in potting media. Perlite and rice husk ash were mentioned that had a potent as alternative growing media for seasonal plants to increase agriculture production due to the lack of production area. This study aimed to determine the effect of using different substrate and growth performance of chili. The method used was the soilless cultivation. The chili was planted in the pot with perlite media, rice husk ash media, and peat moss media. The chili was measured after 65 days after planting. The result showed that rice husk ash and perlite were more potentials in chili growth performance than peat moss. Rice husk ash had the significant result of plant height. While, Perlite effect on root length, plant weight, leaf length, and stem diameter. The best alternative for cultivation chili without substrate based on this research was perlite then rice husk ash and peat moss.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of plug tray cell size and growth media on good seedling production of Gerbera hybrida Hort. Seedlings were grown for 60 days in 50, 72, 128, 162 cell trays contanning perlite, cocopeat and perlite+cocopeat(1:1, v/v). Perlite showed higher bulk density than cocopeat and perlite+cocopeat. Total porosity was greater in perlite, cocopeat and perlite+cocopeat in order. Cocopeat showed the highest water holding capacity. Number of leaves were greatest in 128 cell tray containing cocopeat. Leaf area was greatest in 50 cell tray containing cocopeat. Seedling growth was also better in plug tray of bigger cell size. Seedling growth of fresh and dry weight of shoot and root was much better in the growth media of perlite+cocopeat.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of solution culture systems on growth and mini-tuber yields of hydroponlcally grown potato (Solanum tuberosun L. cv. Dejima). The growth of stem and foliage at 40 and 60 days after planting were better in aeroponics system than the other systems, and stem length and number of stems per plant at 90 days after planting were the greatest as of 65.4 cm, 7.3 in aeroponics and the lowest as of 49.5 cm, 3.2 in scoria media system. Stolon length was the longest as of 30.4 cm in aeroponics at 90 days after planting, and number of stolons was the greatest as of 10.5 in NFT. Number of mini-tubers per plant at 90 days after planting was 67.1, 62. 5, 20.1 and 18.0 in aeroponics, NFT, perlite and scoria media, respectively. The perlite media system made the fewest enlargement of lenticels of mini-tubers. The results indicate that aeroponic system can be used effectively for mini-tuber potato production.
This study compared the effects of cocopeat and perlite growth media on the storability and quality of sweet pepper fruit stored using modified atmosphere packages (MAP) and carton boxes. The fruits were stored at 8℃ for 35 and 30 days, respectively. Perlite-grown fruits had a significantly lower size at harvest due to the medium's inability to hold plenty of water during the growing stage. Contrary to what is expected for small fruits, the result shows box-stored perlite-grown fruits to have lower weight loss and a longer shelf life than cocopeat-grown fruits, while MAP fruits have indifference. Perlite fruits also had a higher quality in terms of dry matter, soluble solids, and vitamin C, while box-stored fruits had a better visual quality. As expected, respiration and ethylene production rates were high, and fruits had similar after-storage firmness values. Based on the findings, perlite-grown sweet pepper fruits may have a better quality and give preference in a box storage condition.
Eight vermiculite-based root media prepared with addition of complete fertilizer (2 g/L; N-$P_2$$O_5$-$K_2$O, 10-10-14) for potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) and a commercial root medium were evaluated in 2000 to develop the root media suitable for potato plug seedling production. The eight media consisted of various ratios of vermiculite, perlite, peatmoss, and compost. In addition, four rates (0, 1, 2, or 4 g/L) of the complex fertilizer for potato were added to a root medium (70% vermiculite, 10% perlite, 10% peat moss, and 10% compost by volume) to determine the optimum addition rate of the complex fertilizer for plug seedlings. Compost addition to the media increased plant height, the number of leaves per plant, and top and root fresh weight of 15-day old plug seedlings. The seedlings raised in root media containing compost produced significantly higher total tuber yield. Addition of the complex fertilizer to root media enhanced seedling growth and increased the number of tubers per plant and tuber yields. The results suggest that root media containing 50% vermiculite, 0 to 20% peat moss, 10% perlite, 20 to 40% compost, and 2 g/L complex fertilizer for potato appear suitable for potato plug seedling production.
