  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of a direct-conversion UHF RFID reader with the range correlation effects of the phase noise. Since a UHF RFIB system uses the same oscillator to generate the transmitted carrier and the local oscillation, the periodic interference and phase noise reduction effects occur due to time delay between two signals. Through exact theory and simulation, we verify how to cancel the periodic interference phenomena using I/Q diversity combining technique. And, we analyze phase noise reduction effects due to range correlation as a function of the tag-reader distance and the offset frequency Using these results, we simulate the symbol-error-rate performance with respect to phase noise with and without range correation effects. We show that the phase noise of the local oscillator has little effect on the symbol-error-rate performance because of phase noise reduction by range correlation.

  • In speech signal processing, it is necessary to estimate exactly the pitch. We propose a new algorithm which uses the correlation coefficient between the original and the repeated segmental waveform in the frame as a parameter in the pitch extraction. The correlation coefficient in the frame reflects the periodic component and the transient ratio of the waveform.

  • In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) image correlator by use of computational integral imaging reconstruction based on the modified convolution property of periodic functions (CPPF) for recognition of partially occluded objects. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by a lenslet array, and subsequently are transformed to a sub-image array which contains different perspectives according to the viewing direction. The modified version of the CPPF is applied to the sub-images. This enables us to produce the plane sub-image arrays without the magnification and superimposition processes used in the conventional methods. With the modified CPPF and the sub-image arrays, we reconstruct the reference and target plane sub-image arrays according to the reconstruction plane. 3D object recognition is performed through cross-correlations between the reference and the target plane sub-image arrays. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments on the target objects are carried out and the results are presented. Experimental results reveal that the use of plane sub-image arrays enables us to improve the correlation performance, compared to the conventional method using the computational integral imaging reconstruction algorithm.

  • The periodic changes of testis and \ulcorner션 epididymidis in Korean hibernating bats, the oriental discoloured bats (Vesportilio superans Thomas) and the Korean greater horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum korak Kuroda) were studied in order to clarify the possibility of correlation between their histological findings and one of physiological facets, hibernation, and the results obtained were as follows: 1. The spermatogenic function of the oriental discoloured bats obtained in July and August was depressed although the spermatocytes showed a considerable cell proliferation. Few mature sperms were observed in the seminiferous tubules of the bat obtained in August. 2. The spermatogenic function of the Korean greater horeshoe bats obtained in September was not remalkable but a considerable number of sperms were stored in the excretory ducts which were characterized by existence of para-tubular spaces in the ductus epididymidis. 3. The spermatogenic epithelia of the Korean greater horseshoe bats obtained in December showed histologically atrophied figures. However, a vast number of sperm remained in extremely expaned luminae of the ductuc epididymidis which epithelial cells were maintained rectangular in shape. 4. These results suggest that there are periodic changes of the spermatogenic epithelia and the excretory ducts, and that those histological changes are closely related to their wintering.

  • In this paper, we propose a maximum-likelihood estimation(MLE) method to obtain the location and the amplitude of the pulses in MPE( multi-pulse excitation)-LPC speech synthesis using multi-pulses as excitation source. This MLE method computes the value maximizing the likelihood function with respect to unknown parameters(amplitude and position of the pulses) for the observed data sequence. Thus in the case of overlapped pulses, the method is equivalent to Ozawa's crosscorrelation method, resulting in equal amount of computation and sound quality with the cross-correlation method. We show by computer simulation: the multi-pulses obtained by MLE method are(1) pseudo-periodic in pitch in the case of voicde sound, (2) the pulses are random for unvoiced sound, (3) the pulses change from random to periodic in the interval where the original speech signal changes from unvoiced to voiced. Short time power specta of original speech and syunthesized speech obtained by using multi-pulses as excitation source are quite similar to each other at the formants.

  • In this paper, the implementation of MAI(multiple access interference)-cancelled SSMA(spread spectrum multiple access) system using orthogonal carriers was presented. Employing the pseudo periodic spreading codes and orthogonal carriers frequency offset, proposed system have the features no MAI during a certain local time-duration. Spreading signals designed by pseudo periodic method and repetition, have zero correlation duration(ZCD) by orthogonal frequency shift method. The SSMA modem has been designed and implemented using surface-acoustic-wave(SAW) device as the matched filter of receiver. The effects of frequency offset on stability have been evaluated using computer simulation.

  • This paper presents a novel collided tag signals's periodic characteristic based radio frequency identification (RFID) tag collision detection method for the ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID. The proposed method utilizes that periodicity of tag signals is maintained even under tag collision. In the proposed method, the correlation between received signal and reference edge signal is used. Simulation result shows that the detection performance using the proposed method is about 10 dB better than that of existing method. In addition, the detection performances with different magnitude difference, phase difference, delay, number of tags are analyzed.

  • Seasonal volume transport on the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf is investigated in terms of objectively fitted transport streamfunction fields based on the current meter data of the TexasLouisiana Shelf Circulation and Transport Processes Study. Adopted here for the objective mapping is a method employing a two-dimensional truncated Fourier representation of the streamfunction over a domain, with the amplitudes determined by least square fit of the observation. The fitting was done with depth-averaged flow rather than depth-integrated flow to reduce the root-mean-square error. The fitting process filters out $11\%$ of the kinetic energy in the monthly mean transport fields. The shelf-wide pattern of streamfunction fields is similar to that of near-surface velocity fields over the region. The nearshore transport, about 0.1 to 0.3 Sv $(1 Sv= 10^6\;m^3/sec)$, is well correlated with the seasonal signal of along-shelf wind stress. The spring transport is weak compared to other seasons in the inner shelf region. The transport along the shelf break is large and variable. In the southwestern shelf break, transport amounts up to 4.7 Sv, which is associated with the activities of the encroaching of energetic anticyclonic eddies originated in Loop Current of the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of streamfunction variability contains $67.3\%$ of the variance and shows a simple, shelf-wide, along-shelf pattern of transport. The amplitude evolution of the first EOF is highly correlated (correlation coefficient: 0.88) with the evolution of the along-shelf wind stress. This provides strong evidence that the large portion of seasonal variation of the shelf transport is wind-forced. The second EOF contains $23.7\%$ of the variance and shows eddy activities at the southwestern shelf break. The correlation coefficient between the amplitudes of the second EOF and wind stress is 0.42. We assume that this mode is coupled a periodic inner shelf process with a non-periodic eddy process on the shelf break. The third EOF (accounting for $7.2\% of the variance) shows several cell structures near the shelf break associated with the variability of the Loop Current Eddies. The amplitude time series of the third EOF show little correlation with the along-shelf wind.

  • The damage of tire by damage material classification method is researched as used ultrasonic wave signal to occur at a tire during vehicle driving. Auto-correlation function after having passed through an envelope detecting preprocess is used for detecting periodicity because of occurring periodic ultrasonic waves signal with tire revolution. One revolution cycle time of a damaged tire and period that calculated auto-correlation function appeared equally in experiment. The result that can classification whether or not there was a tire damage is established.
