Detection of a Radar Signal Using the Periodicity of its Autocorrelation Function (자기 상관 함수의 주기성을 이용한 레이다 신호 검출)

  • A pulse radar signal exhibits periodic appearance of pulses in time. So it leads to a high correlation between two samples separated in time by multiples of its period. In this paper, we present a spectrum sensing technique for a radar signal which exploits the periodicity of its autocorrelation function and a radar pulse interval estimation scheme in order to address the case that the radar pulse interval is not known a priori. Finally, we evaluate the sensing performance of the proposed scheme through computer simulation and compare its performances with those of energy detection.

A planetary companion around K-giant ${\varepsilon}$ Corona Borealis

  • We present high-resolution radial velocity measurements of K2 giant ${\varepsilon}$ CrB from February 2005 to January 2012 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We find that the RV measurements for ${\varepsilon}$ CrB exhibit a periodic variation of 418 days with a semi-amplitude of 129 m/s. There is no correlation with RV measurements and inhomogeneous surface features by examining chromospheric activity indicator (Ca II H region), the Hipparcos photometry, and bisector velocity span. Thus, Keplerian motion is the most likely explanation, which suggests that the RV variations arise from an orbital motion. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 1.7 $M_{\odot}$, for ${\varepsilon}$ CrB, we obtain a minimum mass for the planetary companion of 6.7 $M_{Jup}$ with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.3 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.11. We support that more massive stars harbor more massive planetary companions in giant hosting planetary companions (Dollinger et al. 2009), as well as, we discuss the frequency of detected planetary companions with the metallicity distribution in giant (Pasquini et al. 2007; Quirrenbach et al. 2011).

Radial and azimuthal oscillations of 24 Halo Coronal Mass Ejections using multi spacecraft

  • We have made an investigation on the radial and azimuthal wave modes of full halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs). For this, we consider 24 HCMEs which are simultaneously observed by SOHO and STEREO A & B from August 2010 to August 2012 when they were roughly in quadrature. Using the SOHO/LASCO C3 and STEREO COR2 A & B running difference images, we estimate the instantaneous apparent speeds of the HCMEs at 24 different position angles. Major results from this study are as follows. First, there are quasi-periodic variations of the instantaneous radial velocity with the periods ranging from 24 to 48 mins. Second, the amplitudes of instant speed variations are about a third of the projected speeds. Third, the amplitudes are found to have a weak anti-correlation with period. Our preliminary identification from SOHO observations shows that there are several distinct radial and azimuthal wave modes: m=0 (radial) for five events, m=1 for eleven events, m=2 for three events, and unclear for the other events. In addition, we are making a statistical investigation on the oscillation of 733 CMEs to understand their physical origins.

Factors Influencing on Handwashing Performance among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 손씻기 실천에 영향을 미치는 요인: 건강신념, 자기효능감, 손씻기 태도를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to analyze factors affecting the handwashing performance of nursing students using the health belief model, self-efficacy, and handwashing attitudes. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires in 2018. 223 students enrolled in nursing college participated in the questionnaire, which consisted of four sections: health belief in hand washing, self-efficacy, hand washing attitude, and general handwahsing characteristics. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 21.0 statistical programs. Results: The significant predictors affecting proper hand cleansing were perceived benefits and motivation of health belief model, handwashing time and frequency, and handwashing attitude. Out of these significant variables, perceived benefits was shown to be the strongest predictor. Conclusion: The findings suggest that periodic and steady hand washing training programs need to be implemented in order to improve handwashing practices of nursing students. Such handwashing education programs should include content that sensitizes the benefits of hand washing and provides information on how to carry out hand washing in detail.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal model, using existing models, that is able to estimate the amount of spatter utilizing artificial neural network in the short circuit transfer mode of gas metal arc (GMA) welding. The amount of spatter generated during welding can become a barometer which represents the process stability of metal transfer in GMA welding, and it depends on some factors which constitute a periodic waveforms of welding current and arc voltage in short circuit GMA welding. So, the 12 factors, which could express the characteristics for the waveforms, and the amount of spatter are used as input and output variables of the neural network, respectively. Two neural network models to estimate the amount of spatter are proposed: A neural network model, where arc extinction is not considered, and a combined neural network model where it is considered. In order to reduce the calculation time it take to produce an output, the input vector and hidden layers for each model are optimized using the correlation coefficients between each factor and the amount of spattcr. The est~mation performance of each optimized model to the amount of spatter IS assessed and compared to the est~mation performance of the model proposed by Kang. Also, through the evaluation for the estimation performance of each optimized model, it is shown that the combined neural network model can almost perfectly predict the amount of spatter.

Temporal and spatial fluctuation characteristics of sea surface temperature in Yeosu Bay, Korea (여수해만 수온의 시공간적 변동특성)

  • Temporal and spatial fluctuations of surface water temperature in Yeosu Bay for the period from 2010 to 2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 32 stations in the south coast of Korea. Temperatures in the northern part of the bay are higher in summer and lower in winter than in the southern part of the bay. The lowest and highest temperature of the annual mean are found at the eastern coast of POSCO and at the west of Dae Island, respectively. Cold water masses appear at estuarine area when the discharge of Sumjin river is affluent. Amplitude of temperature fluctuation whose period is less than semi-diurnal is largest at Hadong coast and around Dae Island. Spectral analysis of surface water temperature shows a significant peak at a periodic fluctuation of 0.5 to 24 days and about 15-day period of predominant fluctuation is most frequent in Yeosu Bay. From the cross-correlation analysis of temperature fluctuations, Yeosu Bay can be classified into six areas; the south area affected by South Sea of Korea, the mixed area in the center of the bay, the estuarine area affected by river discharge at the north of the bay, the hot waste water area near Hadong coast, the area around Dae Island and the area near Noryang Channel affected by the water in Jinju Bay, respectively.

Search for extrasolar planets around K-giants: $\alpha$ Arietis - planet or surface features?

  • We report the detection of a low-amplitude 380.8-day radial velocity (RV) variations in oscillating K2 III star ${\alpha}$ Ari (HD 12929). We do not found the correlation between RV variations and equivalent widths of chromospheric activity indicators ($H{\alpha}$ and CaII 8662 ${\AA}line$). The bisector analysis shows that bisector velocity span (BVS) and RV variations are not strongly correlated with each other. These result suggest that the RV variations could have been produced either by planetary companion or by the surface spots. If this RV variation is indeed caused by a planetary companion, an orbital solution with a period of P = 381 days, a semi-amplitude of K = 41 m/s, and an eccentricity of e = 0.25 fits the data best. Assuming a possible stellar mass of $M_{\bigstar} = 1.4-5.6 M\odot$, we estimate the minimum mass for the companion of m sini = 1.8-4.5 $M_{Jup}$ with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.2-1.9 AU. If confirmed, our finding gives a support to search for exoplanets around giant stars with multi-periodic oscillations.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchanger with flat tubes and continuous plate fins having a symmetric and non-symm etric staggered arrangements. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous experimental results. In order to investigate the flow and heat transfer features by periodic boundary conditions, the three blocks were used. Predicted heat transfer coefficients between the three blocks are similar while there are relatively differences, compared with the experimental data. From the calculated results a correlation for Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system.

Detection of exoplanet around evolved K giant HD 66141

  • We present high-resolution radial velocity (RV) measurements of K2 giant HD 66141 from December 2003 to January 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). We find that the RV measurements for HD 66141 exhibit a periodic variation of 480 days with a semi-amplitude of 146 m/s. We do not find the correlation between RV variations and a chromospheric activity indicator (H line). The Hipparcos photometry as well as bisector velocity span (BVS) also do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. Thus, Keplerian motion is the most likely explanation, which suggests that the RV variations arise from an orbital motion. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 1.5 $M{\odot}$, for HD 66141, we obtain a minimum mass for the planetary companion of 7.4 MJup with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.4 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.07. We support that planet occurrence rate around evolved stars is more than 10 % (Dollinger et al. 2009) as well as more massive stars do form significantly more massive planetary companions (Johnson et al. 2007; Lovis & Mayor 2007; Dollinger et al. 2009).

Characteristics of mid-latitude field-aligned irregularities observed with VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar over Korea

  • The 40.8-MHz VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar, located in South Korea (Gyeryong, $36.18^{\circ}N$, $127.14^{\circ}E$), has been operating since December 2009 to investigate ionosphere E- and F-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) of mid-latitude. During the observation, we found E- and F-region FAIs appeared frequently: continuous echoes during the post-sunrise period and Quasi-Periodic (QP) echoes at nighttime for E region ; strong post-sunset and pre-sunrise FAIs for F region. The characteristics of E- and F-region FAIs are presented in terms of seasonal and local time variations of occurrence during December 2009 to August 2012. In addition, to investigate the correlation with geomagnetic activity to FAIs occurrence, we compared K-index variations to local time occurrence. It is worth to note our occurrence result since long term observation over several years in the mid-latitude has not yet been carried out.
