  • This paper presents a reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) based on bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO). In design of a structure, uncertain conditions such as material property, operational load and dimensional variation should be considered. Deterministic topology optimization (DTO) is performed without considering the uncertainties related to the design variables. However, the RBTO can consider the uncertainty variables because it can deal with the probabilistic constraints. The reliability index approach (RIA) and the performance measure approach (PMA) are adopted to evaluate the probabilistic constraints in this study. In order to apply the BESO to the RBTO, sensitivity number for each element is defined as the change in the reliability index of the structure due to removal of each element. Smoothing scheme is also used to eliminate checkerboard patterns in topology optimization. The limit state indicates the margin of safety between the resistance (constraints) and the load of structures. The limit State function expresses to evaluate reliability index from finite element analysis. Numerical examples are presented to compare each optimal topology obtained from RBTO and DTO each other. It is verified that the RBTO based on BESO can be effectively performed from the results.

  • Electric-thermal-structural actuated compliant mechanisms are mechanisms onto which electric voltage drop is applied as input instead of force. This mechanism is based on thermal expansion of material while being heated. Compliant mechanisms are designed subjected to electric charge input using BESO(bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization) method. Reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) is applied to the topology design of actuators. performance measure approach (PMA), which has probabilistic constraints that are formulated in terms of the reliability index, is adopted to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. In this study, BESO method is used to obtain optimal topology of compliant mechanisms from initial design domain. PMA approach is used to evaluate reliability index. The procedure has been tested in numerical applications and compared with the results obtained by other methods to validate these approaches.

  • Engineering applications of global optimization techniques are recently abundant in the literature and it may be caused by both new methodologies arising and faster computers coming out. Many of the optimization techniques are based on natural or biological phenomena. This study put focus on enhancing the performace of Cuckoo Search (CS) among them since it has the least number of parameters to tune. The proposed enhancement can be achieved by applying surrogate-based optimization at every cycle of CS, which fortifies the exploitation capability of the original method. The enhanced algorithm has been applied several engineering design problems with constraints. The proposed method shows comparable or superior performance to the original method.

  • To obtain weight reduction and high performance, level set based topology optimization in magnetic fields is promising for the design of magnetic devices where the precise boundary shape and topological chanages are required. Level set function is introduced to represent ferromagnetic material boundaries and material properties of the magnetic reluctivity are determined. The optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the actuating force in a prescribed direction under limited usage of ferromagnetic material.

  • An aerodynamic optimization design process of multistage axial turbine is presented in this article: first, applying quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to conduct preliminary design and then adopting modern optimization design methods to implement multistage local optimization. Quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods, which mainly refer to S2 flow surface direct problem calculation, adopt the S2 flow surface direct problem calculation program of Harbin Institute of Technology. Multistage local optimization adopts the software of Numeca/Design3D, which jointly adopts genetic algorithm and artificial neural network. The major principle of the methodology is that the successive design evaluation is performed by using an artificial neural network instead of a flow solver and the genetic algorithms may be used in an efficient way. Flow computation applies three-dimensional viscosity Navier Stokes(N-S) equation solver. Such optimization process has three features: (i) local optimization based on aerodynamic performance of every cascade; (ii) several times of optimizations being performed to every cascade; and (iii) alternate use of coarse grid and fine grid. Such process was applied to optimize a three-stage axial turbine. During the optimization, blade shape and meridional channel were respectively optimized. Through optimization, the total efficiency increased 1.3% and total power increased 2.4% while total flow rate only slightly changed. Therefore, the total performance was improved and the design objective was achieved. The preliminary design makes use of quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to achieve most reasonable parameter distribution so as to preliminarily enhance total performance. Then total performance will be further improved by adopting multistage local optimization design. Thus the design objective will be successfully achieved without huge expenditure of manpower and calculation time. Therefore, such optimization design process may be efficiently applied to the aerodynamic design optimization of multistage axial turbine.

  • This paper deals with engine room layout design optimization of fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), which has been proposed as a potential alternative to fossil fuel depletion. Investing the great R&D efforts, the global vehicle manufacturers, especially Honda motor corporate, have shown not prototype vehicle but commercial vehicle using fuel cell in the market recently. In this paper, we analyze cooling performance and flow characteristic in the engine room of newly FCEV, in addition we suggest the optimization process for engine room layout design optimization. The two radiators in the vehicle for fuel cell stack and electronic components cooling have been analyzed and their performance are obtained in terms of cooling performance ratio (CPR). The value of CPR should always be less than one and based on criteria, we have achieved the optimum cooling performance of radiators for stack and electronic components. Aerodynamic performance is evaluated in terms of drag coefficient, improved through underbody modification using air devices.

  • Pressure relief valve (PRV) is one of the important control valves used in nuclear power plants, and its sealing performance is crucial to ensure the safety and function of the entire pressure system. For the sealing performance improving purpose, an explicit function that accounts for all design parameters and can accurately describe the relationship between the multi-design parameters and the seal performance is essential, which is also the challenge of the valve seal design and/or optimization work. On this basis, a surrogate model-based design optimization is carried out in this paper. To obtain the basic data required by the surrogate model, both the Finite Element Model (FEM) and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based numerical models were successively established, and thereby both the contact stresses of valve static sealing and dynamic impact (between valve disk and nozzle) could be predicted. With these basic data, the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) surrogate model which can not only be used for inputs-outputs relationship construction, but also produce the sensitivity of different design parameters were developed. Based on the PCE surrogate model, a new design scheme was obtained after optimization, in which the valve sealing stress is increased by 24.42% while keeping the maximum impact stress lower than 90% of the material allowable stress. The result confirms the ability and feasibility of the method proposed in this paper, and should also be suitable for performance design optimizations of control valves with similar structures.

  • Workflow scheduling is one of the challenging problems in cloud computing, especially when service reliability is considered. To improve cloud service reliability, fault tolerance techniques such as fault recovery can be employed. Practically, fault recovery has impact on the performance of workflow scheduling. Such impact deserves detailed research. Only few research works on workflow scheduling consider fault recovery and its impact. In this paper, we investigate the problem of workflow scheduling in clouds, considering the probability that cloud resources may fail during execution. We formulate this problem as a multi-objective optimization model. The first optimization objective is to minimize the overall completion time and the second one is to minimize the overall execution cost. Based on the proposed optimization model, we develop a heuristic-based algorithm called Min-min based time and cost tradeoff (MTCT). We perform extensive simulations with four different real world scientific workflows to verify the validity of the proposed model and evaluate the performance of our algorithm. The results show that, as expected, fault recovery has significant impact on the two performance criteria, and the proposed MTCT algorithm is useful for real life workflow scheduling when both of the two optimization objectives are considered.

  • This paper describes an application of centrifugal compressor optimization system, in which the blade profile of impeller is represented with NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) curve. A commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program named NUMECA fine/turbo was used to evaluate the performance of the whole centrifugal compressor flow passage including impeller and diffuser. The whole optimization design system was integrated based on iSIGHT, a commercial integration and optimization software, which provides a direct application of some optimization algorithms. To insure the practicability of optimization, the performance of centrifugal compressor under all condition was concerned during the optimizing process. That means a compositive object function considering the aerodynamic efficiency, pressure ratio and mass flow rate under different work condition was applied by using different weight number for different conditions. Using the optimization method described in this paper, an optimized design of the impeller blade of centrifugal compressor was obtained. Comparing to the original design, optimized design has a better performance not only under the design work condition, but also the off-design work condition including near stall and near choke condition.
