  • Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. Multi-view video coding exploits inter-view correlations among pictures of neighboring views and temporal correlations among pictures of the same view. Multi-view video coding which uses many cameras requires a method to reduce the computational complexity. In this paper, we proposed an efficient prediction structure to improve performance of multi-view video coding. The proposed prediction structure exploits an average distance between the current picture and its reference pictures. The proposed prediction structure divides every GOP into several small groups to decide the maximum index of hierarchical B layer and the number of pictures of each B layer. Experimental results show that the proposed prediction structure shows good performance in image quality and bit-rates. When compared to the performance of hierarchical B pictures of Fraunhofer-HHI, the proposed prediction structure achieved 0.07~0.13 (dB) of PSNR gain and was down by 6.5(Kbps) in bitrate.

  • This paper presents the SVC (Scalable Video Coding) scheme which enables the AT-DMB (Advanced Terrestrial - DMB) video service in enhancement layer, while keeping the current T-DMB video service in base layer. But, it is very complicate to implement the SVC encoder and so it is necessary to analyze the complexity and performance for SVC encoder's structures and coding parameters. In this paper, through computer simulations, SVC coding parameters are tested and then, based on these results, three types of SVC encoder models are compared from the viewpoint of the complexity and performance.

  • Since the resolutions of videos increase rapidly, there are continuing needs for effective video compression methods despite an increase in the transmission bandwidth. In order to satisfy such a demand, a reconstructive video coding (RVC) method by using a super resolution has been proposed. Since RVC reduces the resolution of the input video, when frames are compressed to the same size, the number of bits per pixel increases, thereby reducing coding artifacts caused by video coding. However, RVC method using super resolution is not effective in all target bitrates. Comparing the size of the loss generated while downsizing the resolution and the size of the loss caused by the video compression, only when the size of loss generated in the video compression is larger, RVC method can perform the improved compression performance compared to direct video coding. In particular, since HEVC has considerably higher compression performance than the previous standard video codec, it can be experimentally confirmed that the compression distortions become larger than the distortions of downsizing the resolution only in the very low-bitrate conditions. In this paper, we applied RVC based HEVC in various video types and measured the target bitrates that RVC method can be effectively applied.

  • Supporting video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks is particularly challenging due to the time-varying and error-prone characteristics of the wireless channel. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization scheme for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks. Our coding scheme, called Joint Source/Network Coding (JSNC), combines source coding and network coding to maximize the video quality under the limited wireless resources and coding constraints. JSNC segments the streaming data into generations at the source node and exploits the intra-session coding on both the source and the intermediate nodes. The size of the generation and the level of redundancy influence the streaming performance significantly and need to be determined carefully. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the end-to-end distortion by jointly considering the generation size and the coding redundancy. The simulation results demonstrate that, with the appropriate generation size and coding redundancy, the JSNC scheme can achieve an optimal performance for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of force feedback on video gamers' performance with two different types of game controllers, and to verify users' consistency on their perceptions of force feedback effect and their actual performances in video games. 42 qualified players' records on a driving video game were analyzed in this study. This study shows 1) the force feedback effect in video games depends on the type of game controllers, 2) there is inconsistency between gamers' perception on the force feedback effect and their actual performances with the force feedback effect, and 3) emotional pleasure (fun factor) plays a big role in gamers' performances.

  • In this paper, we develop a portable game device with uncompressed HD video and high quality sound output. Portable game devices support not only game function but also various complex functions recently. It especially supports TV-Out port to play realistic game, connecting a large screen display device. But the video and audio output signals of conventional TV-out port have the low performance and these signals are analog output. So, it is difficult that the users enjoy realistic game with benefit of high resolution digital TV. We propose the game device output with uncompressed digital signal, which has no delay of video/audio signal, also has strong immunity to external noise. Since it supports a high resolution video and high quality sound, users can playa realistic game. First, we implement the HDMI to the game device and we test reliability with the various resolutions video inputs and audio inputs. The proposed method can be applied multimedia devices requiring high performance output function as well as portable devices.

  • Video transcoding is a technique used to convert a compressed input video stream with an arbitrary format, size, and bitrate into a different attribute video stream different attributes to provide a efficient video streaming service for the customers is dispersed in the heterogeneous networks. Specifically, frames deletion occur in a transcoding scheme that exploits the adjustment of frame rate, and at this time, the loss in temporal relation among frames due to frame deletion is compensated for the prediction of motion estimation by reusing motion vectors in the would-be deleted frames. But the processing time for transcoding don't have an improvement as much as our expectation because transcoding is done only within the transcoder. So in this paper, we propose a new transcoding algorithm based on prediction period to improve transcoding-related processing time. For this, we also modify the existing encoder so as to adjust dynamically frame rate based on the prediction period and deletion period of frames. To check how the proposed algorithm works nicely, we implement a video streaming system with the new transcoder and encoder to which it is applied. The result of the performance test shows that the streaming system with proposed algorithm improve 60% above in processing time and also PSNR have a good performance while the quality of pictures is preserved.

  • In the H.264 video coding standard, the information for the macroblock is encoded by the independent syntax elements, called RUN and MB_type. Through the experimental observation for various test sequences, it is shown that the performance of the video coding is improved by using the combined RUN and MB_type as an entity. Based on this fact, we propose an unified new syntax element composed of the RUN and MB_type in order to improve the compression ratio of H.264 video coding. In the proposed syntax element, an EOF(End-Of-Frame) symbol indicating the end of picture is used for enhancing the performance of video coding. The simulation result shows that the proposed method outperforms maximally 15 % to the conventional method for the bitrate of the macroblock.

  • This paper presents an objective video quality evaluation method for digital mobile video. The proposed method is to objectify subjective quality by extracting edge region feature metric and blockiness effect. To evaluate performance of proposed algorithm, we carried out subjective video qualify test with the DSCQS method and obtained mean opinion score(MOS) values for CIF/QCIF 140 video clips. We compared error of proposed method with that of existing. The experiment results show that the proposed method has 25% higher performance.
