  • Perchlorate ($ClO_4^-$) is a contaminant found in surface water and soil/ground water. Microbial removal of perchlorate is the method of choice since microorganisms can reduce perchlorate into harmless end-products. Such microorganisms require an electron donor to reduce perchlorate. Conventional perchlorate-removal techniques employ heterotrophic perchlorate-reducing bacteria that use organic compounds as electron donors to reduce perchlorate. Since continuous removal of perchlorate requires a continuous supply of organic compounds, heterotrophic perchlorate removal is an expensive process. Feasibility of autotrophic perchlorate-removal using elemental sulfur granules and activated sludge was examined in this study. Granular sulfur is relatively inexpensive and activated sludge is easily available from wastewater treatment plants. Batch tests showed that activated sludge microorganisms could successfully degrade perchlorate in the presence of granular sulfur as an electron donor. Perchlorate biodegradation was confirmed by molar yield of $Cl^-$ as the perchlorate was degraded. Scanning electron microscope revealed that rod-shaped microorganisms on the surface of sulfur particles were used for the autotrophic perchlorate-removal, suggesting that sulfur particles could serve as supporting media for the formation of biofilm as well. DGGE analyses revealed that microbial profile of the inoculum (activated sludge) was different from that of the biofilm sample obtained from enrichment culture that used sulfur particles for $ClO_4^-$-degradation.

  • Perchlorate is an anionic pollutant that is very soluble and stable in water. It has been detected not only in soil/ground water but also in surface water, drinking water, food, fish, and crops. Perchlorate inhibits iodine uptake by the thyroid gland and reduces production of thyroid hormones that are primarily responsible for regulation of metabolism. Although various technologies have been developed to remove perchlorate from the environment, biodegradation is the method of choice since it is economical and environmentally friendly. However there is limited information on perchlorate biodegradation in salt environment such as salt water. Therefore this paper reviews biodegradation of perchlorate in salt water and related microorganisms. Most biodegradation research has employed heterotrophic perchlorate removal using organic compounds such as acetate as electron donors. Biodegradation research has focused on perchlorate removal from spent brine generated by ion exchange technology that is primarily employed to clean up perchlorate-contaminated ground water. Continuous removal of perchlorate at up to 10% NaCl was shown when bioreactors were inoculated with enriched salt-tolerant perchlorate-reducing bacteria. However the reactors did not show long-term stable removal of perchlorate. Microorganisms belonging to ${\beta}$- and ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria were dominant in bioreactors used to remove perchlorate from salt water. This review will help our understanding of perchlorate removal from salt water to develop a decent biotechnology for the process.

  • Perchlorate, which is still unregulated, is found in tap water, posing a threat to public health. In and out of Korea, there is no clear standard for drinking water quality or discharge. To make matters worse, Perchlorate study is in its infancy in Korea. This research tracked fresh water and purified water of water purification facility A and B located at the city of D, where Nak-dong River is being utilized as the purified water. And it was found that purified water shows no particular pattern in Perchlorate concentrations but represented a higher level of concentration compared to fresh water. With utilizing the research results, the study sought the impact of activated-carbon treatment process on Perchlorate elimination and found out that Perchlorate concentrations increased 38% after the process. The result proves that conventional water purification process can't eliminate Perchlorate. Therefore, it is reasonable that Perchlorate discharge from sources should be minimized.

  • This study was done to investigate perchlorate contamination in Nakdong river. The perchlorate was detected in Nakdong river and ranged from ND to $82.1{\mu}g/L$. The highest concentration was observed in Wheguan. The perchlorate concentration was decreased with the down stream of Nakdong river. Three different virgin activated carbons made of each coal(Calgon), coconut(Samchully) and wood(Picabiol) based activated carbon(AC) were tested for an adsorption performance of perchlorate in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of coal, coconut and wood based AC as 2,300 bed volumn(BV), 719 BV and 288 BV respectively. Adsorption capacity(X/M) of real, coconut and wood based AC was observed. The experimental results of adsorption capacity showed that coal based AC was highest$(768.2{\mu}g/g)$, coconut based AC was intermediate$(299{\mu}g/g)$ and wood based AC was lowest$(99.2{\mu}g/g)$. Moreover, carbon usage rates(CURs) for coal, coconut and wood based AC had been shown as 0.71 g/day, 2.16 g/day and 3.45 g/day respectively. The constant characteristic of the system, k of coal, coconut and wood based ACs were found to be 307.2, 102.5 and 94.2, respectively.

  • Reaction of thianthrene cation radical perchlorate (1) with cumene (4), p-chlorocumene (2), and p-nitrocumene (3) hydroperoxides in acetonitrile at room temperature afforded, inter alia, thianthrene as a common product and 5-(4'-hydroxyphenyl) thianthrenium perchlorate (5) for 4, 5-(5'-chloro-2'-hydroxyphenyl) thianthrenium perchlorate (7) and 5-acetonylthianthrenium perchlorate (6) for 2 and 6 for 3, respectively. Stoichiometry of these reactions showed that 2 moles of 1 gave rise to 1mole of thianthrene and 1 mole of thianthrenium salt (or salts). Nucleophilic reactivity to 1 was found to be in the order of phenol > > p-chlorophenol ${\sim}$ acetone > > p-nitrophenol. Apart from acid-catalyzed heterolytic decomposition of hydroperoxides, small amount of homolytic decomposition products were found from 3 and 4.

  • Perchlorate ($ClO{_4}^-$) is the material that is used as propellants of rockets and material of explosive as a form of ammonium perchlorate salts. Ammonium perchlorate solution of high concentration is recovered from expired rocket through demilitarization process by the water-jet method. If people take perchlorate in food and water, it interferes with adsorption of iodide which is the substance needed to synthesize thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. It has an bad influence upon disturbing pregnancy and synthesis of growth hormone. So the effective method is necessary to remove perchlorate anion in water. By considering economic aspect, we studied effective desorption (regeneration) of perchlorate anion from adsorbent with studies on removal and adsorption of perchlorate anion. Desorption experiment was conducted as batch type. Depending on various conditions (concentration, pH, cation anion form) elution, we evaluated amount, efficiency of desorption(amount of adsorption/desorption ${\times}$ 100). Also, research confirmed the efficiency of mixed resins between anion exchange resin and activated carbon and expected synergic effect from advantages of both adsorbents.

  • In this study, a chloride ion probe as a direct measurement for perchlorate reduction was used to determine whether biological perchlorate reduction was inhibited by other electron acceptors ($O_2$ and ${NO_3}^-$) and to investigate competition of electron acceptors for using electron donors. Profiles of chloride production (= perchlorate reduction) in flasks containing perchlorate reducing populations were monitored by a chloride ion probe. Biological reduction of 2 mM perchlorate was inhibited by 2 mM nitrate that chloride production rate was decreased by 30% compared to perchlorate used as the only electron acceptor and chloride production rate was decreased by 70% when acetate was limited. Reduction of 2mM perchlorate was completely inhibited by oxygen at 7~8 mg/L, regardless of acetate excess / limitation.

  • This research was done to evaluate the potential for destruction of perchlorate in municipal sewage. Laboratory experiments were conducted in flasks containing 3 liters of raw sewage. Sewage was mixed with defined amount of perchlorate and various additives. Perchlorate reduction in sewage did occur, but was quite variable, ranging from 0 to 72% over 72 hour. Addition of even a small amount of perchlorate acclimated biomass (167 mg/L SS) significantly reduced the lag and resulted in complete perchlorate removal. Perchlorate reduction in sewage-brine mixtures was inhibited when the dissolved oxygen level was greater than 2 mg/L, and when the mixture salinity was relatively high (conductivity = 14 mS with equivalent TDS = 8 g/L). When nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) was present with perchlorate in the laboratory flask tests of sewage-brine mixtures, nitrate reduction proceeded first. A significant amount of nitrite ($NO_2{^-}$) accumulated in the sewage-brine mixtures, accounting for about 66% of initial nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N).

  • Perchlorate is used in a number of applications as an oxidizer in solid propellants, munitions and fireworks and is one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals, which interferes with iodide uptake into the thyroid gland. The purpose of this study was to investigate perchlorate occurrence and distribution with a results of analysis of 94 samples collected from military facilities in Korea from October 11 to October 23, 2011. Overall, among all of the 94 samples analyzed, perchlorate was detected in 6.4% of the total number of samples above $4{\mu}g/L$ (minimum reported limit) and the average concentration was $26.1{\mu}g/L$ and the maximum concentration was $107.7{\mu}g/L$ which was observed in surface water near manufacturing site of ammunition. By site classification, perchlorate was detected at one site in 4 manufacturing sites of ammunition and the maximum concentration was $107.7{\mu}g/L$ which was six times higher than that in guideline for perchlorate in Nakdong River and resulted from point source discharge. Perchlorate was detected at 3 sites in 78 measurements for shooting area and the maximum concentration was $12.4{\mu}g/L$ which was collected in dringking water and perchlorate in another sample was detected above MRL in shooting area was collected right away after shooting. These results showed that long term monitoring was needed considering weather conditions and shooting schedules.
