The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of an early childhood environmental education program developed on the basis of relationships among preschoolers' knowledge, emotional attitude, and perceived behavior control of environmental pollution on their knowledge, emotional attitude, perceived behavior control, and behavioral intention. A total of 146 five-year-old preschoolers from eight child-care centers in Seoul and Kyoungki Province participated in this study. The following are the main results of this study. first, the higher the level of knowledge the preschoolers had, the more negative emotional attitude they displayed. Furthermore, the more negative emotional attitude they displayed, the higher the level of perceived behavior control they had. On the contrary, the relationships between knowledge and perceived behavior control varied with exposure situation to environmental pollution. Second, after the environmental education program was administered to the experimental group, the preschoolers from experimental group exhibited more knowledge, more negative emotional attitude, higher perceived behavior control and more active behavioral intention towards environmental pollution than those in the control group.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors affecting health promotion behaviors of upper grade elementary students. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out with 282 fifth or sixth elementary school students from two cities, Korea. Data were collected using self-administrative questionnaires containing items on health knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavior control and health promotion behavior, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Pearson Correlation Coefficients, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: There were significant positive correlations between health promotion behavior and health knowledge (r=.36, p<.001), attitudes (r=.41, p<.001), subjective norms (r=.36, p<.001), perceived behavior control (r=.49, p<.001). Perceived behavior control (${\beta}=.38$, p<.001), health knowledge (${\beta}=.26$, p<.001), perceived health status - good (${\beta}=.15$, p=.005) were significant factors affecting health promotion behavior and explained 31%(F=43.29, p<.001) of variance. Conclusion: Results indicate that level of health promotion behavior is appropriate and perceived behavior control is the most important factor for health promotion behavior among the predictors. These findings also suggest that it is necessary to promote perceived behavior control and health knowledge in developing health promotion intervention programs for these students, as well as a need to strengthen education on sex behavior and health, accident prevention and first aid.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors influencing nurses' intention to care for COVID-19 patients based on the theory of planned behavior, and to test the moderating effect of perceived behavior control between attitude, subjective norms, and nurses' intention to care. Methods: The participants were 167 nurses working at two designated hospitals for infectious diseases located in J and C city, South Korea. Data were collected from October 10th to 25th, 2020, and analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The moderating effect was analyzed using the Process Macro model 1 (95% confidence interval, 10,000 bootstrapping), and a simple slope analysis was performed to identify the moderating effect of perceived behavior control. Results: The factors affecting nurses' intention to care for patients with COVID-19 were attitude toward the behavior (β=.32, p<.001) and perceived behavior control (β=.37, p<.001) in model 1, attitude toward the behavior (β=.28, p<.001) and perceived behavior control (β=.36, p<.001), and perspective taking (β=.26, p<.001) in model 2. The explanation power of this model was 65.0% (F=18.41, p<.001). The moderating effect of perceived behavioral control was statistically significant in the relationship between subjective norms and intention to care for patients with COVID-19 (F=16.37, p<.001). In the simple slope analysis, the reinforcement effect was greatest when the level of perceived behavioral control was at the mean (95% CI=0.46~0.67) and high (95% CI=0.70~1.08). Conclusion: Developing and applying a training program that enhances confidence and improves empathy is necessary to increase nurses' intention to care for COVID-19 patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting health promotion behavior among workers with high risk of metabolic syndrome. This study was based on the planned behavior theory. Methods: The participants were 167 workers at high risk of metabolic syndrome. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Surveyed variables were attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, intention, and health promotion behavior. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: Perceived behavioral control affected the intention of health promotion behavior among the workers with high risk of metabolic syndrome. It explained 62% of variance in the intention of health promotion behavior (F=40.09, p<.001). Perceived behavioral control and occupation affected health promotion behavior among the risk workers with high risk of metabolic syndrome. The two factors explained 16% of variance in health promotion behavior (F=4.95, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that perceived behavioral control is the only factor affecting health promotion behavior when the theory of planned behavior was applied. Therefore, intervention programs for improving health promotion behavior should be focused on strengthening perceived behavioral control.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among the internal locus of control, perceived family support, family cohesion, family adaptability, and children's social behaviors. The subjects were 285 6th and 8th grade students and their homeroom teachers. A questionnaire was used as survey method. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post test. and multiple regression. The results are as follows: First, internal locus of control was positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Perceived family support, family cohesion and adaptability were positively related to social competence and negatively related to antisocial behavior. Second, girls were higher internal locus of control, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and lower in antisocial behavior than boys. The 8th graders had lower scores than 6th graders in perceived family support, family cohesion, family adaptability and social competence and higher level of antisocial behavior. Third, perceived family support and family adaptability impacted social competence in girls, and grade impacted social competence in boys. Grade, perceived family support and locus of control had significant effects on the antisocial behavior in boys, and perceived family support impacted antisocial behavior in girls.
The author tried to verify the mediating effect of the variable, perceived behavioral control, in the relationship between the independent variables(cosmetics-related variables, consumer's preference, advice & inducement), and the dependent variable(purchasing behavior), through AMOS structural equation modeling. As a result of analyzing the mediating effect in the impact relationship between latent variables, it was found that PBC(perceived behavior control) plays a mediating role in the impact relationship between CQ(cosmetics quality) and PB(purchasing behavior). Author found that the higher the quality of cosmetics and the greater the perceived behavior control in domestic cosmetics purchasing behavior, the more likely it will lead to purchasing behavior. In this context, while efforts are being made to improve cosmetic quality, measures to increase perceived behavior control, which can be said to be autonomy in purchasing behavior, should be sought.
The purpose of this study was to test the Theory of Planned Behavior in the prediction of contraceptive behavior among married women. This study used a descriptive correlational design to examine the relationships among the study variables. Eighty married women in Seoul and Kyungki-do participated in this study, Research instruments used were the tool for measuring TPB variables search as attitude toward contraception, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention ; and the tool for measuring contraceptive behavior. The former was modified by the researcher according to Ajzen & Fishbein(1980)'s guidelines for tool development and Jee (1993)'s tool. The latter was developed by the researcher Data was collected from July 20, 1996 to October 25, 1996. The results are as follows ; The three factors, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control of contraception can explain 30% of the variance in contraceptive intention. Inspection of path coefficient for each of the three predictor variables revealed that subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were the predictor variables on intention, while attitude was not. ; and intention and percevied behavioral control factors can explain 42% of the variance in contraceptive behavior. Inspection of path coefficient for each of the two predictor variables revealed that intention and perceived behavioral control were the predictor variables on behavior. In conclusion, this study identified that Theory of Planned Behavior was a useful model in the prediction of contraceptive behavior, and the contraceptive service program based on the TPB variables would be an effective nursing intervention for the change in contraceptive behavior.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in the prediction of smoking cessation intention and smoking cessation behavior among adolescent smokers, in order to provide basic data to develop a future smoking cessation program as a nursing intervention. Method: The study subjects were 80 adolescent smokers who had smoked one cigarette and attended a five-day school smoking cessation program. The data were collected from October 24 to December 21, 1999. The instruments used in this study were the tools developed by Jee (1994) to measure TPB variables such as attitude toward smoking cessation behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, smoking cessation intention, and smoking cessation behavior. The data were analyzed with the SAS/PC program using descriptive statistics, hierarchical multiple regression, and logistic multiple regression. Results: 1. Attitude toward smoking cessation behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were partially significant in predicting smoking cessation intention. 2. Smoking cessation intention and perceived behavioral control toward smoking cessation behavior did not significantly predict smoking cessation behavior. 3. There were partial interaction effects among the attitude toward smoking cessation behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control in the prediction of smoking cessation intention. 4. There were partial interaction effects between smoking cessation intention and perceiver behavioral control toward smoking cessation behavior in the prediction of smoking cessation behavior. Conclusion: This study partially demonstrated support for the TPB model that was partially useful in predicting smoking cessation intention and smoking cessation behavior among adolescent smokers. Therefore, it is recommended that attitude toward smoking cessation behavior and perceived behavioral control should be considered in developing smoking cessation programs and implementing nursing interventions to change the smoking behavior of adolescent smokers.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate hand washing practice and proper hand cleansing among first and second year nursing students who are prone to be exposed to nosocomial infections, and to identify the influence of perceived behavior control and self-efficacy on hand washing practices and proper hand cleansing. Method: Data for 91 students were collected from a nursing college in a metropolitan city in Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 19.0. Result: The mean score for hand washing practice was 38.35 out of a possible score of 48, and the mean sore for proper hand cleansing was 18.63 out of a possible score of 28. The significant factors affecting student hand washing practice were 'residential type' (p=.016), 'perceived behavior control' (p=.021), and 'self-efficacy' (p=.033) which explained 19.9% of the variance. The significant factors affecting proper hand cleansing by the students were 'perceived behavior control' (p<.001) and 'regular exercise' (p=.026) which explained 29.8% of the variance. Conclusion: These results indicate a need for education programs on hand washing including strategies to improve perceived behavior control and self-efficacy to promote more effective hand washing practices.
The majority of studies on breastfeeding consists of descriptive correlational studies identifying the incidence and correlates of breastfeeding. The theory of planned behavior has been shown to yield great predictive power for behavioral goals over which individuals have only limited control such as improving school grades and weight loss. The purpose of this study was to test the "theory of planned behavior" in the prediction of breastfeeding of mothers who delivered vaginally, One hundred mothers who delivered vaginally in one general hospital in Seoul and one general hospital and three private hospitals in Taejeon participated in this study. The instruments used for data collection in this study were developed by the researchers following the guidelines suggested by Ajzen & Fishbein(1980) and Ajzen & Madden(1986). The instruments included measurement of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and intention. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation, hierachical multiple regression and logistic regression. The results are as follows ; 1. Intention to breastfeed correlated significantly with attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. Both attitude and subjective norm did not make a significant contribution to the prediction of intention, but the addition of perceived behavioral control to the regression equation greatly improved the model's predictive power, increasing the R²from .05 to .52. 2. Intention to breastfeed alone had a significant predictive effect on actual breastfeeding, resulting in a regression coefficient of .16(X²=8 60, p<.01), but when perceived behavioral control was added to the equation, intention was not a significant predictive variable and only perceived behavioral control showed significant predictive power on actual breastfeeding, resulting in a regression coefficient of .12(X²=4.69, p<.05). In sum, breastfeeding behavior lent only partial support to the second version of the theory of planned behavior, and because perceived behavioral control had a strong effect on intention to breastfeed and actual breastfeeding, It would be desirable to develop nursing intervention programs which focus on strengthening the perceived behavioral control for the promotion of breastfeeding.
