Fertilizer Concentration after Flowering Affects Growth and Fruit Setting of Ornamental Pepper (개화 후 비료의 농도가 Ornamental Pepper의 생장과 착과에 미치는 영향)

  • To evaluate the effect of the fertilizer concentration after flowering on growth a31d fruit setting of ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), plants were fertilized with $100\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N ($EC=0.8\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}) until flowering, and then with 0 (no fertilizer), 100, 200 or $300\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N (fertilizer solution EC of 0.15, 0.8, 1.45 or $2.10\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}, respectively) until harvest. Maximum leaf area and shoot dry mass at the end of the growing period were obtained when plants were fertilized with $200\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N. Total fruit number per plant at the end of the growing period was not different when plants were fertilized with 100,200 or 300 mg{\cdot}L^{-1}of N concentration. When plants were fertilized with $200\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N, the number of fruits per plant was decreased significantly as compared to 100, 200 or $300\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N, whereas the percentage of red fruits at the end of the growing period was maximized. Total fruit fresh weight per plant at the end of the growing period was highest with the concentration of $200\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N. The EC of the growing medium remained within 0.8 to $1.2\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}\;2.0\;to\;3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}, or 3.0 to 4.5 dS{\cdot}m^{-1}when fertilizer concentrations were 100, 200 or $300\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N, respectively. Throughout most of the experiment, the pH of the growing medium remained within 5.4 to 6.2, but dropped to 4.9 near the end of the experiment when fertilizer concentration was 200 or 300\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N. Content of most of the nutrients In the leaf was not affected by the different fertilizer concentration. Only aluminum was significantly affected and decreased linearly with increasing fertilizer concentration. The results from this study indicated that optimal fertilizer concentration after flowering for commercial production of ornamental pepper was 100 or $200\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1} of N. At these concentrations, the EC of the growing medium remained approximately within 0.8 to 1.2 and 2 to $3\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}, respectively. This appears to be the optimal range for vegetative growth or fruit setting of ornamental pepper plants, and indicates that ornamental pepper can be grown with a fairly wide range of fertilizer concentrations.

The Influence of Cover-crop (Vicia tetrasperma) Cultivation on the Occurrence of Major Insect Pests and their Natural Enemies in Pepper, Capsicum annum (얼치기완두 피복재배가 고추 주요 해충 및 천적 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: In organic agriculture, various cover crops have been used to control weeds. In this study, we investigated the suppressive effects of Vicia tetrasperma (L.) Schred (Eolchigi wandu) on the occurrence of major insect pests and their natural enemies in pepper. METHODS AND RESULTS: To estimate the effect of cover-crop on arthropod diversities and occurrences of insect pest in pepper. V. tetrasperma was sowed as cover-crop plot October, 2008 and 2009. Control plot was kept bare in winter season and mulched with black plastic-film before transplanting red pepper seedlings. Pepper seedlings, Capsicum annuum, were transplanted on the 19th of May, 2009 and on the 20th of May, 2010, respectively. Five Yellow sticky traps were set and changed at 7 days interval. Densities of aphids and thrips and damaged fruit rates by oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta, were counted. CONCLUSION(S): Populations of aphids, thrips and braconid wasps were maintained high on V. tatrasperma before transplanting pepper seedlings and in early season of pepper. However, the densities of aphids on pepper in the control plot were much higher than in the cover-crop plot in the early stage of pepper. Damaged fruit rates by both of thrips and oriental tobacco budworm were not significantly different between the two experimental plots.

Outbreak of Cucumber mosaic virus and Tomato spotted wilt virus on Bell Pepper Grown in Jeonnam Province in Korea

  • In August 2006, a severe disease incidence showing mosaic and/or necrotic symptoms on two bell pepper varieties including red-colored 'Special' and yellow-colored 'Fiesta' was observed in a greenhouse located in Gwangyang, Jeonnam province, Korea. To identify causal viruses, total RNAs were extracted from 11 fruit samples with and without symptoms. Specific oligonucleotide primers for Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) were designed based on the sequences available on GenBank. Database comparisons of the deduced amino acid sequences of each sequence produced 100% and 98% matches with nucleocapsid protein gene of TSWV (Acc. No. ABE11605) and coat protein gene of CMV (Acc. No. DQ018289), respectively, suggesting that the symptoms on bell pepper fruits might be caused by the infection of CMV and TSWV. To our knowledge this is the first report of necrotic as well as mosaic virus disease on bell pepper fruits by the infection of CMV and TSWV in Jeonnam province, Korea.

Newly Recorded Problematic Plant Diseases in Korea and Their Causal Pathogens

  • Since 1993, a total of 50 problematic plant diseases unrecorded in Korea were surveyed in Gyeongnam province. Totally 34 new host plants to corresponding pathogens investigated in this study were 5 fruit trees, 9 vegetables, 12 ornamental plants, 3 industrial crops, and 5 medicinal plants. Among the newly recorded fruit tree diseases, fruit rot of pomegranate caused by Coniella granati and Rhizopus soft rot of peach caused by Rhizopus nigricans damaged severely showing 65.5% and 82.4% infection rate. Among the vegetable diseases, corynespora leaf spot of pepper caused by Corynespora cassiicola and the crown gall of pepper caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, powdery mildew of tomato caused by Oidiopsis taurica were the most severe revealing 47.6%, 84.7%, and 54.5% infection rate in heavily infected fields, respectively. In ornamental plants, collar rot of lily caused by Sclerotium rolfsii, gray mold of primula caused by Botrytis cinerea, soot leaf blight of dendrobium caused by Pseudocercospora dendrobium, sclerotinia rot of obedient plant caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum showed 32.7 to 64.8% disease incidence. On three industrial plants such as sword bean, broad bean, and cowpea, eight diseases were firstly found in this study. Among the diseases occurring on broad bean, rust caused by Uromyces viciae-fabae and red spot caused by Botrytis fabae were the major limiting factor for the cultivation of the plant showing over 64% infection rate in fields. In medicinal plants, anthracnose of safflower caused by Collectotrichum acutatum was considered the most severe disease on the plant and followed by collar rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii.(중략)

Cytological and Morphological Characterization of Anther Derived Plants from Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Special'

  • Anthers of sweet pepper $F_1$ cultivar 'Special' were cultured on Dumas De Vaulx (C medium), supplemented with $0.1mgL^{-1}$ 2, 4-D and $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ kinetin with 3% sucrose, and 0.32% phytagel. The calluses obtained were further sub-cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium without growth regulators for regeneration. Regenerated plantlets were grown in plastic pots under plastic house and characterized their cytological and morphological characters in spring, 2008. Twenty percent plantlets were identified as haploid plants after chromosome and ploidy analysis. Haploid plants contained 12 chromosomes, high stomatal density with small stomatal length as compared to diploid plants. Stomatal length in haploids was 23.3% smaller than diploids. Haploid plants were characterized as small leaf and petiole size, poor vigor, thin stem and short plant height, short internodes and small flower buds, fruit size and fruit weight as compared to diploid plants and most of the haploid fruits were seedless. SP55, SP62, SP68, SP72 and SP77 are found high yielding double haploids with high total soluble content (8.6, 8.7, 9.2, 9.1 and $9.8^{\circ}Brix$, respectively) and desirable fruit shape, and recommended them to exploit as inbred lines for heterosis breeding.

Damage of Rice, Soybean, Potato, and Red Pepper as Affected by Simulated Acid Rain (인공산성비에 의한 벼, 콩, 감자, 고추의 피해양상)

  • In order to investigate the relationships between the responses of four crops (rice, soybeans, potatoes, and red pepper) to acid rain, the simulated acid rain(SAR) of pH 1.8, 2.3, and 2.8 and normal rain of pH 6.0 were applied from 30 days after emergence to harvest at the two-week interval for rice, soybeans and red pepper and at a week interval for potatoes. SAR of pH 1.8 and 2.3 caused brown spots in the leaves of rice, soybeans, and red pepper and the damages were severer as the pH of SAR lowered, while no visual damages were observed in potatoes. The SARs did not affect chlorophyll content of rice and potatoes, while chlorophyll content of soybeans and red pepper decreased as the pH of SAR lowered. Photosynthetic activity was not significantly different among the pHs of SAR in rice, while decreased as pHs of SAR lowered from pH 2.8 to 1.8 in soybeans, potatoes, and red pepper. Yield of rice, soybeans, and potatoes was not affected by the pHs of SAR, but in red pepper the length, diameter, and weight of a fruit, the number of fruits per plant, and total matured fruit yield decreased as the pHs of SAR lowered. In rice and potatoes visual damages caused by SAR did not correlated with other observed traits. However, visual damages were negatively correlated with chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity of soybeans and photosynthetic activity and yield of red pepper.

Resistance to Anthracnose Caused by Colletotrichum acutatum in Chili Pepper(Capsicum annuum L.)

  • Pepper fruit anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum acutatum, results in serious yield loss and affects crop quality in many Asian countries, making it a disease of economic consequence. A source resistant to C. acutatum was identified by the AVRDC within the line Capsicum chinense Jacq. PBC932. The resistant breeding line C. annuum AR is the $BC_3F_6$ generation derived from C. chinense Jacq. PBC932. The inheritance of resistance to C. acutatum was analyzed in segregating populations derived from the two crosses HN 11$\times$AR and Daepoong-cho$\times$AR. Detached mature green fruits were inoculated using microinjection method. The disease response was evaluated as the disease incidence at 7 DAI. The segregation ratios of resistance and susceptibility to C. acutatum in the $F_2$ and $BC_R$ populations derived from the two crosses fit significantly to a 1:3 Mendelian model. This indicates that the resistance of AR to C. acutatum is controlled by a single recessive gene.

Effects of Organic Liquid Fertilizer Fertigation on Growth and Fruit Quality of Hot Pepper (유기액비 관비가 고추 생육 및 과실 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of organic liquid fertilizer (OLFs) fertigation on the growth and fruit quality of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Nokkwang (Seminis Korea)'. Treatments were given with control (chemical feritilzer), OLF I(fowl dropping : fish meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF II(fowl dropping : bone meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF III(fowl dropping : bone meal, 1:1), and OLF IV(fowl dropping : rice bran : soybean meal, 2:1:1). The composition ratio of OLF based on weight to weight. The pH and EC of OLFs according to different material and compositions ranged from 6.5 to 6.8, and from 2.91 to $3.69dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. The C/N ratio was the highest as 5.75 in OLF Ⅳ, and there was no difference among the treatments in C/N ratio of the exception of OLF IV. In OLF IV total fruit weight was the highest as 1,558g per plant and total fruit number increased as 23.7% compared to control. The content of capsaicin in the ripened pepper increased with OLF I and II treatments, and decreased with OLF III and IV treatments compared to control of $662mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, but the soluble solid content was the highest with OLF IV treatment as $10.0^{\circ}Brix$.
