  • Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo (IE) and impulse response (IR) was performed to detect the rear cavity of concrete for a test-bed which was made with the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. The test-bed was designed to be capable of observing various response reflecting the existence of iron reinforcing bar and cavity. GPR survey did not clearly resolve the existence of the cavity, although distinguishable responses were observed in the presence of the cavity. In contrast, IE and IR method showed distinct responses, indicating the existence of the cavity. Finally, integrated application of the three methods makes it possible to exactly identify the location of the cavity, although the iron reinforcing bar made a little variation of response.

  • Introduction: Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is essential before surgery under general anesthesia in maxillofacial trauma patients. MMF is used basically to reconstruct the occlusion and occlusal stability to recover the facial shape and oral functions. The arch bar and wire is a traditional method for MMF, but it can not only bring pressure to the periodontal ligaments and teeth but also cause a penetrating injury to the surgeons. Materials and Methods: In this study, 198 patients with an open reduction using a manual reduction without MMF from September 2005 to May 2010 in Dankook University Dental Hospital were subjected to a follow-up evaluation during the postoperative 4 months periods. This study evaluated the incidence of complications according to the condition of the patient (gender, age), the state of bony union of the fracture sites and a numeric rating scale evaluation for postoperative pain scoring. Results: 1. The complications were classified into major and minor according to the seriousness, and the major complication rate was as low as 2.02%. Only 2 cases of re-operations (1.01%) were encountered. In the classification according to the fracture line, plate fracture was observed in both cases of mandibular symphysis fracture, and angle fractures and loosening of two screws were noted in the case of mandibular angle fracture. 2. The complication rate was similar regardless of gender and age. 3. The degree of bony union was satisfactory, and the complication rate was reduced as the bony union improved. 4. More patients complained of pain as the operation time was increased. Conclusion: The use of MMF is not always necessary if a skilled assistant is provided to help manually reduce the fracture site. Compared to other studies of mandibular fracture surgery using MMF, the complication rate was similar using only manual reduction and the patients' discomfort was reduced without MMF.

  • PVD (Prefabricated Vertical drain) consists of filter and core. An effective PVD has two basic filtration functions ; first to retain soil particle ; and second, to allow water to pass from the soil into the PVD core without clogging or blinding. Clogging which reduces the permeability of the geotextile filter jacket is caused by fine particles penetrating into the geotextile filter jacket in relatively low permeability soil conditions. As clogging performance increases gradually, excess pore water flow from soil is resisted and finally consolidation delays. Current soil-geotextile filter system criteria are generally based on relationships between a representative pore size of the geotextile and particle size of the soil. In Korea, PVD geotextile filter system criteria have been applied by only testing AOS (Apparent Opening Size) of filters without evaluating the filtration and clogging performance on soil-geotexile filter systems. Therefore, the filtration tests on soil-geotexile filter systems were conducted in order to evaluate the filtration and clogging performance with 3 kinds of geotextile filters. On these tests, we have applied geotextile filter system criteria on PVD in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ sites.

  • The development of new concepts of liners is required in order to effectively neutralize the enemy's attack power concealed in the armored vehicles. A multiple-layer liner is one of possibilities and has a mechanism for explosion after penetrating the target which is known as "Behind Armor Effect." The multiple-layer explosive liner should have sufficient kinetic energy to penetrate the protective structure and explosive material react after target penetration. With this in mind, double-layer liner materials were obtained by cold spray coating methods and these material properties were experimentally characterized and used in this simulation for double-layer liners. In this study, numerical simulations in the three different layer types, i.e., single, A/B, A/B/A in terms of the layer location were verified in terms of finite element mesh sizes and numerical results for the jet tip velocity, kinetic energy, and the corresponding jet deformation characteristics were analysed in detail depending on the structure of layer types.

  • Lots of various utilities are buried under the surface. The effective management of underground utilities is becoming the very important subject for the harmonious administration of the city. Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) survey including other various underground survey methods, is mainly used to detect the position and depth of buried underground utilities. However, GPR is not applicable, under the circumstances of shallow depth and places, where subsurface materials are inhomogeneous and are composed of clay, salt and gravels. The aim of this study is to overcome these limitations of GPR and other underground surveys. High-frequency electromagnetic (HFEM) method is developed for the non-destructive precise deep surveying of underground utilities. The method is applied in the site where current underground surveys are useless to detect the underground big pipes, because of poor geotechnical environment. As a result, HFEM survey was very successful in detecting the buried shallow and deep underground pipes and in obtaining the geotechnical information, although other underground surveys including GPR were not applicable. Therefore this method is a promising new technique in the lots of fields, such as underground surveying and archaeology.

  • The protein level of cytoskeletons in cultured myoblasts was found to gradually decrease during the course of myogenesis. This decrease, however, could be prevented by treatiag the ceils with calpeptin (benzyloxycarbonyl-Leu-nLeu-H), a cell penetrating inhibitor of calpain. In contrast, E-64, which also is a potent inhibitor of calpain but can not be transported into the cells, showed little or no effect. In addition, the treatment of calpeptin was found to stabilize a number of specific cytoskeletal proteins from degradation but without any effect on the pattern of total cells proteins. Furthermore, calpeptin, but not E-64, blocked myoblast fusion in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that calpain is responsible for the myogenic time-dependent loss of cytoskeletal proteins and that the degradative process is associated with myoblast fusion. These results also suggest that the differential effects of the calpain inhibitors depend on the permeabIlity of the drugs across the cell membrane.

  • The performance of a landmine detection system depends on consistent extractions of the features of landmines. Since landmines have diverse sizes, it is critical to select an appropriate window size to represent the landmine region consistently. Conventional detection systems are incapable of extracting consistent landmine features because they employ fixed window sizes. This paper proposes a window size selection method according to the size of a landmine. The proposed method selects an appropriate window size based on the type of a landmine estimated from the response signal of the system. Data on various types of soils and landmines were generated from a simulation program to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results verified that the proposed method, which employs an adaptive window size, yields a better landmine detection rate than the conventional methods, which employ fixed window sizes.

  • This article aims to examine European reactions against the Ottoman mission headed by Enver Pasha, who was dispatched to China during the 'Boxer Uprising' in 1901. Based on Western archival documents, we can find reliable and informative correspondence about the attitude of the European countries toward the sultan's mission and its pan-Islamic plans in China. The coming of the Ottoman mission caused great reaction in such European countries as Britain, France, Germany and Russia, who were engaged in a competitive power struggle for an influential political and economic position in China. They kept a close watch on the sultan's envoy to find out his secret mission on the one hand and tried to persuade Enver Pasha not to work against their advantage in China on the other. From time to time, Abdul Hamid II (r. 1876-1909), the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, sent China an official mission and secret agents, through whom he tried to subjugate Chinese Muslims for his own advantage. The significance for the Ottoman Empire of any success in penetrating China by way of a pan-Islamic approach cannot be overrated, not only for political advantage but also for commercial and cultural benefit. Like other European countries, Ottomans could retain or gain rights which might bring them opportunities for free trade in opium and in other commodities. The sultan believed that they would constitute a great political factor to his advantage, because most of the tens of millions of Chinese Muslims recognized the Ottoman sultan as their caliph and praised him in their Friday sermon (Khutuba). Taking these factors into consideration, he decided to dispatch the Enver Pasha mission during the Boxer Uprising (1898-1901), responding to the suggestion of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. However, when the Ottoman mission arrived in China, the uprising had already been suppressed. This unexpected situation made the envoy initiate meaningful contacts with Chinese Muslims during its stay in China.

  • The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) launched on June 16, 2009 has six experiments including of the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) onboard. The CRaTER instrument characterizes the radiation environment to be experienced by humans during future lunar missions. The CRaTER instrument measures the effects of ionizing energy loss in matter specifically in silicon solid-state detectors due to penetrating solar energetic protons (SEP) and galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) after interactions with tissue-equivalent plastic (TEP), a synthetic analog of human tissue. The CRaTER instrument houses a compact and highly precise microdosimeter. It measures dose rates below one micro-Rad/sec in silicon in lunar radiation environment. Forbush decrease (FD) event is the sudden decrease of GCR flux. We use the data of cosmic ray and dose rates observed by the CRaTER instrument. We also use the CME list of STEREO SECCHI inner, outer coronagraph and the interplanetary CME data of the ACE/MAG instrument. We examine the origins and the characteristics of the FD-like events in lunar radiation environment. We also compare these events with the FD events on the Earth. We find that whenever the FD events are recorded at ground Neutron Monitor stations, the FD-like events also occur on the lunar environments. The flux variation amplitude of FD-like events on the Moon is approximately two times larger than that of FD events on the Earth. We compare time profiles of GCR flux with of the dose rate of FD-like events in the lunar environment. We figure out that the distinct FD-like events correspond to dose rate events in the CRaTER on lunar environment during the event period.
