  • Reinforced concrete bridge decks are the first to be damaged by vehicle loads and rain infiltration. Concrete deterioration primarily occurs owing to the corrosion of rebars and other metal components by chlorides used for snow and ice melting. The structural condition and concrete deterioration of the bridge decks within the pavement were evaluated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey data. To evaluate concrete deterioration in bridges, it is necessary to develop GPR data analysis techniques to accurately identify deteriorated locations and rebar positions. GPR exploration involves the acquisition of reflection and diffraction wave signals due to differences in radar wave propagation velocity in geotechnical media. Therefore, a full-waveform inversion (FWI) method was developed to evaluate the deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge decks by estimating the radar wave propagation velocity in geotechnical media using GPR data. Numerical experiments using a GPR velocity model confirmed the deterioration phenomena of bridge decks, such as concrete delamination and rebar corrosion, verifying the applicability of the developed technology. Moreover, using the synthetic GPR data, FWI facilitates the determination of rebar positions and concrete deterioration locations using inverted velocity images.

  • Objective: The Hu sheep is a renowned breed known for its high reproductive rate. It is in estrus all year round, and its breeding population is gradually expanding. However, the current techniques for cryopreserving semen have limited effectiveness, which hinders the continuous development of this species. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of different penetrating cryoprotectants (CPAs) and egg yolk (EY) concentrations on the cryopreservation of Hu ram semen to determine the most effective combination. Methods: In this study, the effects of glycerol (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), dimethylacetamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, different proportions of GLY and EG, EY on sperm quality after thawing were investigated by detecting sperm total motility (TM), progressive motility (PM), straightline velocity, curvilinear velocity, average path velocity, amplitude of lateral head displacement, wobble movement coefficient, average motion degree, functional integrity (plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. Results: When GLY and EG were added together, compared to other concentration groups, 6% GLY significantly (p<0.05) increased TM, PM, plasma membrane integrity, and acrosome integrity of thawed sperm. Additionally, it significantly (p<0.05) decreased the ROS level of sperm. In this study, the TM, PM, and membrane integrity of the 6% EG were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of the control, 1% GLY+5% EG and 6% GLY+6% EG groups. Compared to other concentration groups, 20% EY significantly (p<0.05) improved the TM, PM, and plasma membrane integrity of thawed sperm. However, the integrity of the acrosome increased with the higher concentration of EY. Conclusion: In conclusion, the postthawed Hu ram semen diluted with a diluent containing 6% GLY and 20% EY exhibited higher quality compared to the other groups.

  • To ensure the safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities, continuous monitoring during construction and after closure is essential, particularly for coastal sites where seawater can increase the permeability of crystalline rocks and promote fracture zone formation. While borehole sampling provides high-accuracy data, its limited spatial coverage restricts broader interpretations. In contrast, geophysical surveys enable the acquisition and analysis of 2D and 3D data, offering valuable insights into extensive subsurface structures. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is particularly advantageous due to its ability to non-destructively acquire deep subsurface data in a short time. This paper evaluate the possibility of seawater intrusion using the results of long-range GPR survey along the coast near a low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility is located. The applicability of long-range GPR surveys for monitoring seawater intrusion was evaluated by comparing the previously published groundwater flow modeling scenarios and groundwater electrical conductivity data. A comparative analysis of long-range GPR survey data and the conductivity of groundwater validated the accuracy of long-range GPR in accessing seawater intrusion characteristics. Long-range GPR can be employed to verify groundwater flow model for seawater intrusion evaluations, and can also be applied to structural geological investigations related to hydrogeological characteristics, as well as site characterization monitoring.

  • Duodenal injuries following a blunt or penetrating trauma are uncommon and account for just 3% to 5% of all abdominal injuries. About 22% of all duodenal injuries are caused by blunt trauma. An overlooked injury or delayed diagnosis of duodenal injury may lead to increased mortality and morbidity. We report two cases of a duodenal injury following blunt abdominal trauma.

  • Noise emitted by driving cars affects our daily life, penetrating wherever man lives or works. There are three types of possible sound emitting processes that are aerodynamic sources, air pumping and tire vibration. In this paper, a theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation by the surface vibration of running tires and experimental verification has been conducted to evaluate sound radiation characteristic due to tire vibration.

  • So far systematic and reliable methods for the investigation of track substructure (ballast and subgrade) are not developed yet. This study presents the applicability of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and PBS (Portable Ballast Sampler) to the evaluation of railway trackbed conditions. Including FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) often used to evaluate the subsurface conditions of pavement, the standard system for assessing trackbed conditions will be developed in the future.
