Molecular Structure and Organization of Crustacean Hyperglycemic Hormone Genes of Penaeus monodon

  • The Crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) has been shown to exist as multiple molecular forms in several crustacean species. In Penaeus monodon, a gene encoding CHH (so-called Pem-CHH1) was recently described. In this study, the molecular structures of two other CHH genes (Pem-CHH2 and Pem-CHH3) are reported. Both the Pem-CHH2 and Pem-CHH3 genes contain three exons that are separated by two introns that are similar to the structure of other genes in the same family. An analysis of the upstream nucleotide sequences of each Pem-CHH gene has identified the putative promoter element (TATA box) and putative binding sites for several transcription factors. The binding sites for CREB, Pit-1, and AP-1 were found upstream of all three Pem-CHH genes. A Southern blot analysis showed that at least one copy of each Pem-CHH gene was located within the same 10 kb genomic DNA fragment. These results suggest that the CHH genes are arranged in a cluster in the genome of P. monodon, and that their expression may be modulated by similar mechanisms.

Where You Live Matters to Have the American Dream: The Impact of Collective Social Capital on Perceived Economic Mobility and the Moderating Role of Income

  • The current research develops and tests the theory that beliefs in economic mobility are affected by social capital at the community level, especially for low-income individuals. Integrating concepts from social capital and perceived economic mobility (PEM), this research hypothesizes that members of disadvantaged groups (vs. members of advantaged groups) are more likely to adjust their PEM depending on the social capital at the community level. Using archival data, multilevel analysis is employed to examine whether individual- or community-level social capital increases PEM and the extent to which income moderates this relationship. Consistent with our hypotheses, social capital at the community level is significantly associated with PEM and this relationship is stronger for low-income (vs. high-income) earners. Study 1 shows that individuals in communities with high levels of social relations and participation are more likely to have higher PEM than those in communities with lower levels. Study 2 replicates this finding with a similar dependent variable: negative prospects. Further, the PEM-enhancing and negative prospects-decreasing effects of community-level social capital are consistently stronger for low-income (vs. high-income) earners. This study extends the investigation of PEM and social capital by suggesting social capital as a possible antecedent of PEM.

A PID Control of Supply Duct Outlet Air Temperature in Personal Environment Module

  • The work presented here is a design and an implementation of PID control system to regulate a supply duct outlet air temperature in PEM (Personal Environment Module). In PEM, the air is heated to the required temperature while it flows through the supply duct without any mixing chamber. This makes the control of air temperature in PEM difficult. A simulation is done first to understand the relationship between a temperature distribution in working area, flow rate and the outlet air temperature of PEM. Then a linear dynamic model of heating process in PEM is derived. P, PD and PID type control systems, to provide the rapid response without overshoot and saturation in heater command voltage, are designed using a linear model obtained. Experimentally obtained data shows that the control system satisfies the design criteria and works properly in controlling the supply duct outlet air temperature.

PEM 수전해에서 막과 전극의 내구성에 미치는 구동 온도의 영향 (Effect of Operation Temperature on the Durability of Membrane and Electrodes in PEM Water Electrolysis)

  • PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) 수전해의 성능향상에 대해 많은 연구개발이 진행되었으나, 내구성에 대한 연구는 아직 초기 단계라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 성능향상을 위해 PEM 수전해 구동 온도를 상승시켰을 때, 수전해 내구성에 미치는 영향에 대해 연구하였다. 50~80 ℃ 온도 범위에서 일정 전류 조건으로 구동하면서 전압변화, I-V, CV (Cyclic Voltammetry), LSV (Linear Sweep Voltammetry), Impedance, FER (Fluoride Emission Rate) 등을 측정했다. 운전온도가 상승할수록 열화속도가 증가했다. 50~65 ℃에서는 IrO2 전극 촉매 열화가 PEM 수전해 셀의 내구성에 주로 영향을 주었다. 80 ℃에서는 고분자 막과 전극 열화가 비슷하게 진행되어 short 저항이 1.0 kΩ·cm2 이하로 감소하면서 shorting 현상에 의해 구동한지 144시간 만에 성능이 초기의 약 1/3로 감소하였다.

  • 태양광과 풍력발전의 잉여전기를 공급받아 수전해를 구동하는 경우 날씨 변동에 따라 구동과 정지를 반복해야한다. 수전해를 구동하다 정지하면 잔류 수소와 산소에 의해 PEM 연료전지와 같은 상태가 되고, 구동 중 형성된 수전해의 높은 전위 때문에 전극과 고분자막이 정지 중에도 열화될 가능성이 높다. 본 연구에서는 PEM 수전해가 구동/정지 반복과정에서 전극과 고분자막의 열화가 얼마나 진행되는지 확인하고자, 144시간 동안에 구동/정지 횟수를 변화시키며 성능 감소를 측정하였다. 전극 촉매 활성면적 변화와 고분자막의 수소투과도와 불소유출속도 등을 분석해 전극과 고분자막의 특성 변화를 측정했다. 전체적으로 정지 횟수가 증가할수록 PEM 수전해 성능이 감소했다. 144시간동안에 5회 정지했을 때 IrOx 촉매 활성이 30% 이상 감소하였고, 수소투과도는 80% 증가해서 전극과 고분자막이 모두 열화됨을 확인했다.

  • 재생에너지 자원이 풍부한 제주도에서 수전해 시스템을 활용하여 그린수소를 생산하는 실증단지를 준비 중이며, 수전해 시스템의 장기 운영시 상황을 검토하기 위하여, PEM 수전해 셀을 가속시험평가 하여 수전해 셀의 내구성을 검토하였고, 제주도 풍력기반의 전력패턴을 적용하였을 때 수전해 셀의 내구성을 검토하였다. 가속시험평가 (저전류-고전류 반복 인가)를 800시간 진행한 후, PEM 수전해 셀의 성능이 최대 10%, 운전조건에서 5.5% 감소되었으며, 임피던스 분석결과 PEM 수전해 셀의 Ohmic 저항보다 전극의 분극저항이 크게 증가한 것을 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 제주도의 풍력패턴을 적용하여 내구성평가를 진행한 경우, PEM 수전해 셀의 성능이 최대 1.6%, 운전 조건에서 1% 미만의 성능감소를 보여주었으며, 임피던스 결과 Ohmic 저항 및 전극의 분극저항의 변화가 작은 것을 알 수 있다.

PEM 연료전지 스택의 과도상태 출력특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Transient Characteristics of PEM Fuel Cell Stack)

  • The transient power characteristics of a PEM fuel cell stack was experimentally studied using a commercial 1.2kW PEM fuel cell ($Nexa^{TM}$ Power Module, Ballard Power System Inc.). The conditions in PEM fuel cell stack such as temperature and water content change rather slowly because of their large heat capacity and long channel length, which results in long transient time to converge to a steady state. The steady characteristics of the PEM fuel cell module was determined first, followed by the measurement of its transient characteristics upon stepwise and continuous load current changes. During the stepwise current change from 5A to 25A, the output voltage initially decreased below the steady voltage and then increased gradually. Similar behavior was also observed for the stepwise current change from 25A to 5A. This transient behavior is explained with reference to the evolution of the temperature and water content of the PEM fuel cell stack.

  • 위성시스템의 성능 및 무게, 비용 등의 요구조건이 높아지면서 시스템 설계를 위한 고성능,고효율의 전기전자부품이 요구되고 있다. 이런 요구를 충족하기 위하여NASA나 ESA에서 사용하고 있는 고 신뢰성과 안전성에 바탕을 둔 기존의 표준소자에 비해 신기술과 고성능으로 빠르게 업그레이드되고 있는 상용부품의 수요가 증가하고 있다. 특히 상용집적소자인 PEM은 많은 우주프로그램에서 사용되고 있고 그 영역을 넓히기 위한 연구가 계속되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 우주 프로그램에 사용하기 위한 상용PEM소자의 고려사항과 검증동향에 대해 소개하고자 한다.

OXYGEN CONCENTRATION IN THE CATHODE CHANNEL OF PEM FUEL CELL USING GAS CHROMATOGRAPH

  • Because of the low temperature operation, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell has a water phase transition. Therefore, water management is an important operation issue in a PEM fuel cell because the liquid water in the fuel cell causes electrode flooding that can lower the cell performance under high current density conditions. In this study, in order to understand the reactant distributions in the cathode channels of the PEM fuel cell, an experimental technique that can measure the species concentrations of reactant gases by using gas chromatograph (GC) is applied for an operating PEM fuel cell. The oxygen distribution along the cathode flow channels of PEM fuel cell is mainly investigated with various operating conditions. Also, the relations between cathode flooding and oxygen concentrations and oxygen consumption pattern along the cathode channel configurations of the unit cell adopted for this study are discussed using GC measurement and visualization experiment of cathode flooding. It is found that the amount of oxygen consumption is very sensitive to various operating conditions of the fuel cell and was much affected by the flooding occurrence in cathode channels.
