  • As an effort to clarify the ecosystem of Osaka Bay, a semi-enclosed coastal area under the influence of stratification, a three-dimensional water quality model with combination of the baroclinic flow model and primitive eco-system model was constructed. The proposed model succeeded in simulating the time-depending flow and density structure and the baroclinic residual currents in Osaka Bay. In present study, we tried to improve the model by taking account of the benthic-pelagic interaction and exchange of nutrients between sea bottom sediments and overlaying water. On vertical structure, the model consists of 13 layers of water and eight layers of sediments. Long-term prediction of water quality was conducted from 1964 to 1985. This period is characterized by rapid water pollution and its decrease by the cutoff reduction of COD and P flowed into Osaka Bay. By combining the sediment model into original model, the numerical model was confirmed to shows more reasonable results in simulating the water quality in Osaka Bay.

  • The tribe Erythropini Hansen, 1910 belonging to the subfamily Mysinae Haworth, 1825, is one of the peculiar groups mainly found in the pelagic or deep sea. Of these, the genus $Erythrops$ G.O. Sars, 1869 including two mysids, $Erythrops$ $minuta$ Hansen, 1910 and $Erythrops$ $nana$ W. Tattersall, 1922, is reported for the first time from Korea. The genus is easily distinguished from other genera by the antennal scale with a terminal strong spine, the carpus of third to eighth thoracopods divided into the propodus by an oblique articulation, and the trapezial telson. The morphological descriptions and the illustrations of these species are given with photographs. As a result of this study, 49 species of mysids including these two species are now recorded in the Korean fauna.

  • The movements of skipjack schools during purse seine operations were observed by scanning sonar in the Southwest Pacific Ocean in April 2004. Swimming speed and directional changes were analyzed in relation to heading of the purse seine during shooting, speed of the purse seiner and distance to the net. Escaped schools turned clockwise (relative to the heading of the purse seiner during shooting) significantly more frequently than captured schools, who primarily turned counter-clockwise. The swimming speed of a fish school, whether it was caught or escaped, was somewhat related to the ship's speed, but swimming speed did not differ between captured and escaped schools. The behavior of skipjack schools during purse seining consists of very complex movements with changes in swimming speed and direction in relation to the nets or purse seiner. Therefore, these responses of skipjack schools to purse seining can be useful for modeling the capture process of purse seining in relation to fishing conditions.

  • The last Sea is a typical bark-arc basin consisting of basins, plateaus, ridges, and seamounts. The Ulleng Basin, located in the southwestern corner of the last Sea, contains thick Neogene sedimentary sequence. Analysis of over 2,500 km of single-channel seismic reflection data suggests that hemipelagic sedimentation prevailed over much of the basin during the late Miocene and pelagic sedimentation became more dominant during the Pliocene. During the Pleistocene terrigeneous sediments transported by turbidity currents and other gravity flows, together with continuous hemipelagic settling, resulted in well-stratified sedimentary layers. Influx of terrigenous sediments during the Pleistocene formed depocenters in the western and southern parts of the basins. In the Ulleung Interplain Gap, where the Ulleung Basin joins the deeper Japan Basin, sediment waves suggesting bottom current activities are seen.

  • Two pelagic species Siriella izuensis Murano and Fukuoka, 2008 and Siriella japonica Ii, 1964, are reported for the first time from the Korean waters, together with descriptions and illustrations. S. izuensis can be distinguished from its closest relative, Siriella japonica, by the normal inner flagellum of the antennule of males, as opposed to the swollen proximal part in S. japonica, and by the slightly more distinct tendency of alternate arrangement of spines on the distal third lateral margin of the telson than in S. japonica. S. izuensis and S. japonica differ distinctly from other related species by a combination of the triangular rostral plate, the moderate size of the eyes, the form and arrangement of the lateral spines of the telson, and six or seven graded spines on the distal outer margin of the uropodal exopod. A taxonomical key is given for the genus Siriella from the Korea waters.

  • This paper describes and assesses the parameterisation of MP, the microplankton compartment of the carbonnitrogen microplanktondetritus model. The compartment is 'the microbial loop in a box' and includes pelagic bacteria and protozoa as well as phytoplankton. The paper presents equations and parameter values for the autotroph and microheterotroph components of the microplankton. Equations and parameter values for the microplankton as a whole are derived on the assumption of a constant 'heterotroph fraction'. The autotroph equations of MP allow variation in the ratios of nutrient elements to carbon, and are largely those of the 'cellquota, thresholdlimitation' algal growth model, which can deal with potential control of growth by several nutrients and light. The heterotroph equations, in contrast, assume a constant elemental composition. Nitrogen is used as the limiting nutrient in most of the model description, and is special in that MP links chlorophyll concentration to the autotroph nitrogen quota.

  • Three species of pelagic sergestid shrimps, Deosergestes seminudus (Hansen, 1919), Sergia lucens (Hansen, 1922) and S. talismani (Barnard, 1947), were identified based on collections by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute from the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea between 2003 and 2011. They are herein reported for the first time from the Yellow Sea. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with color photographs of all species are also given. With the addition of these species, the family Sergestidae in the Korean waters now comprises five species belonging to three genera. Finally, a key to the Korean genus and species of the family Sergestidae is presented.

  • In pelagic longline, deploying the gear such that the depth of the hook is the same as that of the target fish is important to improve the fishing performance and selectivity. In this study, the depth of the tuna longline hook was estimated using the mass-spring model, catenary curve method, and secretariat of the pacific commission Pythagorean method in order to improve the performance of the longline gear in Fiji. The former two methods were estimated to be relatively accurate, and the latter showed a large error. Further, the mass-spring model accounted for the influence of tidal current in the ocean, which was found to be appropriate for use in field trials.
