The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of elderly pedestrian accidents and to suggest policy implications to enhance the level of elderly pedestrian safety. Although much efforts has made to enhance traffic safety environment, pedestrian traffic accidents among elderly population are not significantly decreased. This is mainly because current traffic safety measures do not much consider the characteristics of elderly pedestrians in the aspects of physical and psychological conditions. Main findings from vehicle-pedestrian traffic accident data and survey are as follows. First elderly pedestrians have high probability of traffic accident near crosswalks or cross streets rather than on crosswalk or cross streets. Second they need more green light time for crossing the streets. Third, they feel motor cycles running on the side walk and parked vehicles on the side walk are the most dangerous factors. Forth, general drivers do not have reasonable understanding for the walking behaviors of elderly pedestrians. Fifth, elderly pedestrians frequently need to rest while walking. Sixth, elderly people do not see clearly or understand traffic signs. Finally, many elderly pedestrians experience accidents or inconvenience while walking on the sidewalk.

In the case of a pedestrian traffic accident, it has a large-scale danger directly connected by a fatal accident at the time of the accident. The domestic ITS is not used for intelligent risk classification because it is used only for collecting traffic information despite of the construction of good quality traffic infrastructure. The CNN based pedestrian detection classification model, which is a major component of the proposed system, is implemented on an embedded system assuming that it is installed and operated in a restricted environment. A new model was created by improving YOLO's artificial neural network, and the real-time detection speed result of average accuracy 86.29% and 21.1 fps was shown with 20,000 iterative learning. And we constructed a protocol interworking scenario and implementation of a system that can connect with the ITS. If a pedestrian accident prevention system connected with ITS will be implemented through this study, it will help to reduce the cost of constructing a new infrastructure and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents for pedestrians, and we can also reduce the cost for system monitoring.

Seoul has 424 traffic fatalities in 2010 and 227 of them related to pedestrian crashes. In addition, it revealed that 40% of pedestrian fatalities occurred during jaywalking. Through the effective methods preventing jaywalking can save lots of people, and it can reduce social costs pertinent to pedestrian crashes. Therefore, this study is to suggest the methods preventing jaywalking through conducting literature reviews, human factors with pedestrian and vehicle characteristics, as well as geometric features of accident site or spot. Firstly, in order for examining the contributing factors of accident, this research conducts statistical analysis on pedestrian accidents specifically in jaywalking. Secondly, the analysis on human factors about pedestrian and drivers revealed that drivers with high speed play pivotal roles in pedestrian fatalities. Thirdly, Road and environment factors showed both expected and contradictory results through analyzing total numbers of lane or dry/icy pavement conditions. Consequently, this study can be used to prevent and alleviate pedestrian accidents as well as expected to be applied to future researches about pedestrian safety facilities.

This study aims to identify the throw distance in terms of truck weight, bumper height, and speed in a truck and pedestrian collision, and to propose a model for throw distance estimates. For this purpose, a simulation analysis is performed using the PC-crash program with the following experiment conditions: Truck weight of 5t, 15t, and 25t, Bumper height from 0.3m to 0.6m by 0.1m, and speed from 10km/h to 100km/h by 10 km/h. Experimental results show that the truck speed and bumper height are found to be significant factors for pedestrian throw distance, but truck weight is not a significant factor. Also, a regression model is developed for pedestrian throw distance estimate from the multiple regression analysis. The adjusted $R^2$ value of the model is 93.3%, which is very good explanatory power.
In order to reconstruct vehicle-pedestrian collision accidents, this paper presents a fuzzy tool to estimate accurately the impact velocity of the vehicle using parameters which could be easily collectable at the accident scene. The fuzzy rules and membership functions were set up using number of over 200 domestic and foreign data from accidents and empirical tests and 700 data from multibody simulation experiments. The developed fuzzy tool deduces the category of pedestrian trajectory and impact speed of the vehicle using 4 membership functions and 2 logic rules. The membership function of throw distance was differently set according to the deduced category of trajectories. The implemented fuzzy program was validated through comparing with the domestic and foreign empirical data. The output results agree very well in impact velocities of vehicle resulting the accuracy and usefulness of the developed tool in the reconstruction analysis of vehicle-pedestrian collision accidents.

This study proposes a methodology to assess the traffic safety benefits of technical regulation for pedestrian leg. Traffic safety benefit is defined as the injury reduction in this study. Actual accident analysis and simulation experiments using LS-Dyna3d are conducted to establish statistical models for developing the methodology. The relationship between collision speed and parameters of the regulation is explored. An application example of the proposed methodology is also presented for more comprehensive understanding. It is believed that the proposed methodology would be greatly utilized in developing various technologies and policies to protect pedestrian.

Pedestrian safety is becoming a major priority on the nation's roadway policy. Numerous strategies have been experimented with nationwide in an attempt to reduce the accidents of pedestrian-vehicle crashes, especially in pedestrian crosswalk. We suggest the wireless controlled in-pavement flashing light system to reduce the accident at pedestrian crosswalk. We have recommended the use of wireless controlled systems as a tool to manage the In-pavement flashing light system that have retain high visibility goals for pedestrian preserving or enhancing pedestrian safety. Then we have compared this system with any other legacy systems in respect of cost and effects.
There are no specific criteria deciding what type of crosswalk installs although 4 typed crosswalks at signalized intersections classify according to number of stop line, spacing from the border of intersections and existence of traffic islands or not. Accidents involving pedestrians at signalized intersections are classified by type of crosswalks by traffic volume, pedestrian volume at crosswalk, intersection geometry and phase in view of pedestrians' safety at 50 intersections in Gwangju. The Multiple regression models are applied to express the pedestrian accident rate. In addition, process deciding what type of crosswalk installs which includes accident rate involved pedestrian is changed into number of accident is represented to reduce number of accidents. This paper presents what type of crosswalk installs in order to reduce pedestrian involved accidents at new or existing crosswalk.
Traffic islands were introduced for drivers and pedestrians to use the road in a safe and orderly way and were also a specified zone between traffic lanes to divide conflicting traffic flows and to provide pedestrian refuge. However, existing research and relevant standards described its purpose and effects only but not a safety standard to decide whether the traffic island warranted. This study was to introduce a parameter which had a high relationship with accidents by analyzing road and traffic conditions and traffic accident data at urban intersections. Based on the relationship between the parameter and the traffic accidents at the intersection, a pedestrian accident probability model was made by using a logit model. In addition, the study reviewed a pedestrian accident probability corresponding to traffic volume and size of the intersection during design of the intersection and then suggested the effectiveness of the traffic island in terms of traffic safety. In conclusion, when a large-scale intersection has significant traffic volumes, a high probability of traffic island-induced pedestrian accidents appears, while in the case of small volumes, the probability is low. Targeted design and operations of a traffic islands is necessary, because its introduction itself does not enhance pedestrian safety in all cases at all intersections. This study can be a useful reference for further development to set up a scheme of the traffic islands in terms of traffic safety.
The national standards for the installation of pedestrian crosswalks prohibits installation of crosswalks within 200 meters of nearby overpasses, underpasses, or crosswalks. In case the exceptional installation is required, the feasibility study is to be thoroughly conducted by the local police agency. However, it is an undeniable fact that the specific installation standards for optimal types and locations of crosswalks are not yet to be established. This paper examines the development of traffic accident prediction model applicable to different types and locations of bus stops(type A and type B) at mid-block intersections. Furthermore, it develops the poisson regression model which sets the "number of traffic accidents" and "traffic accident severity" as dependent variables, while using "traffic volumes", "pedestrian traffic volumes" and "the distance between crosswalks and bus stops" as independent variables. According to the traffic accident prediction model applicable to the type A bus stop location, the traffic accident severity increases relative to the number of traffic volumes, the number of pedestrian traffic volumes, and the distance between crosswalks and bus stops. In case of the type B bus stop model, the further the bus stop is from crosswalks, the number of traffic accidents decreases while it increases when traffic volumes and pedestrian traffic volumes increase. Therefore, it is reasonable to state that the bus stop design which minimizes the traffic accidents is the type C design, which is the one in combination of type A and type B, and the optimal distance is found to be 65 meters. In case of the type A design and the type B design, the optimal distances are found to be within range 60~70meters.
