  • The radioactive compound $squalene-H^3$ prepared from peas (Pisum sativum L.) with 5H -mevalonic acid was administered to two- and four-year-old American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) Plants and cuttings in September. The $squalene-H^3$ uptake was low $(40\~86\%).$ $Squalene-H^3$ was not incorporated into the panaquilin sapogenin panaxadiol. This may be due to its poor solubility characteristics and plant absorption, or to the low specific activity. It is possible, but unknown, if any squalene was metabloized into the carbohydrate portion of the panaquilins.

  • An examination is made of container movements, air cargo/passengers and telecommunications traffic in Northeast Asia during 1995. A drawback to studying flows between major cities is that information on telecommunications traffic is only available between countries. Also container traffic data are restricted to individual ports. Consequently, most attention is paid to movements of passenger aircraft between major cities derived from analysing timetables, particularly as they can be related to regional development concepts applied in Europe such as the 'blue banana' and 'bunches of grapes' concepts. A 'peas in a pod' may be a more appropriate movements are examined again in 1998 to gauge the impact of the Asian crisis.

  • This study aimed to quantify the attitude toward doping among handball players and to identify the influence of players' demographic information, knowledge of doping, education of anti-doping on the attitudes toward doping. 385 elite handball players (193 adolescent players, 165 adult players) were participated in this study and filled in the questionnaire about demographic information, knowledge of doping, education of anti-doping and Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale (PEAS). Collected data were analyzed by Stepwise multiple linear regression. Adult players were more generous about doping than adolescents, and, adolescent players' attitudes toward doping were influenced by their gender and age. In adults, attitudes toward doping were related with only the gender. These results would be useful information to develop the effective anti-doping strategy for handball play.

  • Effects of three types of dietary fibres on blood glucose and liver glycogen were studied in male rats. The fibres were used as 10% of the diet supplemented from dietary sources, white beans, peas and carrots. The experiment continued for 5 weeks. At the end of the experiment, fasting blood glucose and liver glycogen were determined. The results showed that replacing carrot fibres and pea fibres by white bean fibres produced significant reduction of blood glucose by 28% and 43%, respectively, while exchanging pea fibres by carrot fibres produced no significant reduction of blood glucose gy 20%. Liver glycogen level (mg/100 g liver) was not affected by altering the fibre type in the diet.

  • In germinating pea, contents of enodgenous polyamine in the leaf and stem were determined, and protein content, peroxidase activity and pattern of isozymes were examined in the leaf treated with polyamines. During growth of the pea for 14 days in light condition, the polyamines in leaf and stem showed the highest level at the 5th day, and were decreased rapidly at the 7th day, kept almost constant level since then. The putrescine level was relatively higher than those of spermidine and spermine, and cadaverine was also detected. On the other hand, in the leaf treated with spermine (0.01 mM) protein content increased about 250% than that of the control, the peroxidase activity increased ore than 100% in spermine of 0.01 mM and 0.1 mM. In treating with putrescine of 0.1 mM the pattern of peroxidase isozyme appeared 4 new cathodic bands (pI 4.8, 5.6, 5.9 and 6.8) compared with the control, the clear cathodic bands (pI 5.6, 5.9, 6.4 and 6.6) were also observed in spermine of 0.1 mM. These results suggest that polyamines were important factor in the differentiation of pea at the early stage of germination.

  • Polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was conducted with a pea cDNA library using two primers synthesized from homology analysis of amino acid sequences for animal and plant cytosolic FBPases. A PCR product with 650 bp long was cloned into pGEM-T vector and sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence of the cDNA fragment was 98, 91, and 85% homologous with those of cytosolic FBPases from spinach, sugarbeet, and sugarcane, respectively. It was 51% homologous with amino acid sequence of FBPase from pea chloroplasts. Northern blot analysis was proceeded with the cDNA clone resulting that 1.2 kb transcript was highly expressed in light-grown pea leaves but almost not expressed in dark-grown etiolated pea seedlings. When peas grown in the light for 10 days were transferred to darkness, the transcript was gradually decreased with dark treatment, indicating that the expression of the enzyme was induced by continuous white light but suppressed by dark treatment. Pea cytosolic FBPase was highly expressed in leaves with trace amounts in stems. but almost not expressed in roots.

  • This study examined adolescent male and female students' attitudes toward physical education (PE) from the Philippines and South Korea. Participants were 451 middle school students from the Philippines and South Korea. The Physical Education Attitude Scale (PEAS) was used to measure students' PE attitudes. Overall, students had moderately positive attitudes toward PE. PE attitudes of Korean boys were more positive compared with Filipino boys, while the reverse was found for Korean females and their Filipino counterparts. Based on the different aspects of PE, Filipino girls were more motivated to participate in PE activities and more satisfied with their PE class than Korean girls. Korean boys were highly satisfied, more comfortable, and less anxious during PE compared with Filipino boys. Finally, Filipino boys had less positive view towards their PE teacher than Korean boys. This study shows adolescent students' attitudes toward PE were generally positive, complex, and affected by sex and nationality. It also provides additional knowledge on comparative international research on cross-cultural PE attitudes.
