A study was made to investigate the microstructure and the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel, Al-Mg alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy each representing bcc, fcc and hcp crystal structures, respectively fabricated by equal-channel angular(ECA) pressing. After a series of ECA pressings was performed, most grains were significantly refined below ${\mu}m$ in diameter with high mis-orientation of grain boundaries irrespective of different crystal structure used. Regarding the strain hardening capability, tensile tests of ultrafine grain (UFG) dual-phase (ferrite/martensite) steel which was different from UFG ferrite-pearlite steel were carried out at ambient temperature, and corresponding mechanical properties were discussed in relation to modified C-J analysis. Low-temperature and/or high strain-rate superplasticity of the UFG Al-Mg alloy and UFG Ti-6Al-4V alloy were also studied. Based on the analysis used in this study, it was concluded that UFG alloys exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties as compared to coarse-grained (CG) counterparts.
The effects of eight types of spheroidizing annealing conditions including annealing temperature, annealing time, cooling rate, and furnace atmosphere on the microstructure and hardeness were determined in SCM440 steel which has been widely used for automotive parts. The well-spheroidized structure and minimum hardness were obtained when the steel was heat-treated at $770^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, cooled to $720^{\circ}C$ at a cooling rate of $24^{\circ}C/h$, and then kept for 7 hours at the $720^{\circ}C$ followed by air cooling. In order to increase the productivity and to save the manufacturing cost, it is desirable to apply a faster cooling rate to the spheroidizing annealing. It was found that a cooling rate of $100^{\circ}C/hr$ was the fastest cooling rate applicable to the SCM440 steel among the four cooling rates used in this study. The microstructure consisted of ferrite and very fine spheroidized cementite when the steel was annealed for 13 hours at $720^{\circ}C$ below $A_{C1}$ temperature. This was caused by the short annealing time and the retarding effect of Cr and Mo on both the dissolution of pearlite to cementite and coarsening of spheroidized cementite. The steel heat treated in air showed the decarburized layer of about $125{\mu}m$ in thickness at the surface.
Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. Also, it has been reported that, additional strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron can be obtainded from the proper combination of matrix structures by the heat treatment and addition of alloying elements. In this study the effect of special heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Ni, Mo) on the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures, strength and toughness of ductile cast iron were studied systematically. In water quenching from $770^{\circ}C$, the martensite volume(%) increased, but the ferrite volume(%) decreased with increment of Ni content. In as cast, pearlite volume(%) and hardness increased with increment of Mo and Ni contents. And with the increment of the destabilization austempering holding time, the bainite volume(%) increased but the martensite volume(%) decreased. As destabilization austempering holding time is same, bainite volume(%) decreased, martensite increased with the increment of Ni and Mo contents. The hardness and tensile strength decreased, but impact energy increased with the decrease of Ni and Mo contents, and increment of holding time of destabilization austempering treatment.

The effects of alloying elements on the structure and mechanical properties of compacted/vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin and molubdenum for producing pearlite matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The Brinell hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the specimens with the range of compositions, [1.5% Cu-0.05% Sn-(0.2-0.4)% Mo-(0.2-0.6)% P-(0.035-0.070)% B], was found to fall within in the following range, depending on their composition; Brinell hardness of BHN 250-315, ultimate tensile strength of $28.1-40.3kg/mm^2$. It was also found within this experiment that CV graphite cast irons possessing higher amount of phosphide eutectic exhibit better wear resistance, but the wear resistance became deteriorate when the area fraction of phosphide eutectics exceed more than 10%. From these experimental results, it could be concluded that the CV graphite cast iron containing 1.5% Cu, 0.05% Sn, 0.4% Mo, 0.2% P and 0.035% B showed good mechanical and wear resistance properties.

The effects of annealing temperature and time on mechanical properties and microstructures were already investigated in cold drawn pearlitic steel wires. During annealing, the increment of the tensile strength at low temperatures found to be due to age hardening, while the decrease in the tensile strength at high temperatures was attributed to age softening, involving the spheroidization of lamellar cementite and recovery of lamellar ferrite. Since Between increase of tensile strength and the occurrence of the delamination would be closely related to the dissolution of cementite, the increase of drawing strain by lower annealing temperature caused the between higher tensile strength and the easier occurrence of the delamination in cold drawn pearlitic steel wires.
Correlation between microstructural features and segregation of elements (Si, Mn, P and S) near the mid of thickness in the base metal and the synthetic HAZ was investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the degree of center segregation and weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was also conducted by evaluating the effect of P concentration on the critical applied stress. The results obtained are as follows: 1) Pearlite band, containing the MnS type inclusion and a locally transformed structure with a higher hardness, was observed in the center segregation region. 2) By the weld thermal cycle, center segregation region was transformed to the white band which had a higher hardness than that of base metal due to a greater hardenability of concentrated Mn, P etc.. 3) Weld cold cracking susceptibility in the thickness direction was mainly dependent on the concentration of impurity elements rather than on the number of the segregated particles near the mid of thickness. 4) During welding, the higher concentrated region was easily changed into white band. Therefore, it could be predicted that the initiation and propagation of a cold crack would be promoted by increasing the restraint stress and hydrogen content.
In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of friction stir welding(FSW) for joining carbon steels, microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded carbon steels with different grain structures were investigated. In comparison of O-type stir zone(SZ) appeared in various aluminium alloys, configuration of SZ in friction stir welded carbon steels displayed U-type. Plastically deformed pearlite band structure was identified to surround the SZ, indicating the existence of so-called thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ). However, the TMAZ of carbon steels was much narrower than that of Al alloys. The microstructures of both stir zone and TMAZ revealed bainite matrix in a conventional carbon steel for shipbuilding, while, in the same region, ferrite matrix microstructures were formed in a low carbon fine grained steel. The conventional carbon steel showed superior stirring workability to that of the fine grained carbon steel. The yield and tensile strength of the friction stir welded joints were comparable to those of the base metals, and the elongation in welded joints demonstrated excellent ductility. Absorbed energy in SZ of the fine grained carbon steel was ten times higher than that obtained from conventional submerged arc weld metal of the same steel. Based on these results, the application FSW to carbon steels was found to be feasible.
The effect of $0.01{\sim}0.10%$ Sb and Sn on the wear resistance of ductile cast iron was investigated. The hardness was increased with Sb to 0.10%, but the elongation and the impact value were decreased. The tensile strength was increased with up to 0.05% Sb, however decreased with $0.05{\sim}0.10%$ Sb. The hardness and the tensile strength were increased and the elongation was decreased with up to 0.10% Sn. The nodularity of graphite was decreased with above 0.08% Sb however Sn had no effect on that. When the maximum compressive stress was low ($42kg.f/mm^2$), the weigth loss was decreased with increased hardness and when that was high ($54kg.f/mm^2$ and $65kg.f/mm^2$), the weight loss did not depend upon the hardness. The pearlite stabilization with Sb and Sn increased with the wear resistance of ductile cast iron.
In this study, time-dependent distributions of temperature and stresses, in the box-column welded from ultra thick plates with center segregation, has been analyzed by the commercial finite element package SYSWELD+, for several types and angles of groove. The major points of investigation are the optimum type and angle of groove that minimize weld stress specially at the center segregation, as well as temperature distribution, residual stresses and changes in the mechanical properties. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) Generally the thermal cycle at the root of groove exhibits relatively rapid cooling pattern, however, most of the other part weldment have a slow cooling pattern in all groove types. 2) Most of the micro-structures of weldment are composed of ferrite and pearlite, meanwhile we could find martensite and bainite locally a the root of the groove. 3) Optimum groove type for high heat input welding of box-column corner is a double groove type, and the optimum angle for the groove is 30~$45^{\circ}$ that minimize deformation and weld stress at the center segregation.

As ships become larger, thicker and higher tensile steel plate are used in shipyard. Though special chemical compositions are required for high-tensile steels, recently they are made by the TMCP (Thermo-Mechanical control process) methodology. The increased Yield / Tensile strength of TMCP steels compared to the normalized steel of same composition are induced by suppressing the formation of Ferrite and Pearlite in favor of strong and tough Bainite while being transformed from Austenite. But this Bainite phase could be vanished by another additional thermal cycle like welding and heating. As thermal deformations are deeply related by yield stress of material, the study for prediction of plate deformation by heating should niflect the principle of TMCP steels. The present study is related to the development of an algorithm which could calculate inherent strain. In this algorithm, not only the mechanical principles of thermal deformations, but also the initial portion of Bainite is considered when calculating inherent strain. Distortion analysis results by these values showed good agreements with experimental results for normalized steels and TMCP steels during welding and heating. This algorithm has also been used to create an inherent strain database of steels in Class rule.
