  • The Quenching and Self Tempering (QST) rolling is treated in terms of an advance process on Controlled Rolling and Cooling Technology (CRCT). In the analysis, the effect of this process is governed by both quenching and finishing conditions in the related with temperature. The objective of the QST model is to simulate the temperature gradient of the stock being rolled in the rolling mill. A comparison of computer simulated and manufactured micro structure as well as mechanical properties shows a good consistency. The micro structure of this high-strength round bar consists of tempered martensite and ferrite + pearlite phases.

  • A numerical analysis program is developed by FDM scheme for the prediction of microstructural transformation during heat treatment of steels. In this study, multi-phase model was used fur description of diffusional austenite transformations in low-alloy hypoeutectoid steels during cooling after austenitization. A fundamental property of the model consisting of coupled differential equations is that by taking into account the rate of austenite grain growth, it permits the prediction of the progress of ferrite, pearlite, and bainite transformations simultaneously during quenching and estimate the amount of martensite also by using K-M eq. In order to simulate the microstructural evolution during tempering process, another Avrami-type eq. was adopted and method for vickers hardness prediction was also proposed. To verify the developed program, the calculated results are compared with experimental ones of casting product. Based on these results, newly designed heat treatment process is proposed and it was proved to be effective for industry.

  • The effects of copper as an alloying element on the microstructure of Compacted Vermicular graphite cast iron which was treated with Mg-REM spheroidizer have been studied. With the increase of copper content up to 2.0wt.%, the following results were obtained; First, the ratio of residual magnesium content in the as-cast iron has been found to be increased, possibly due to the decrease of sulfur content in the melt. Thus, the morphology of graphite in the as-cast iron has been found to be more nodular type. Second, the proportion of pearlite in the matrix has been found to he increased, however the matrix being with free carbide precipitates in the copper range of 1.2wt.% to 2.0wt.%. Third, the tensile strength of the as-cast iron in the temperature up to $400^{\circ}C$ was increased.

  • Mechanical properties of high strength ductile cast iron for the brake caliper of truck were investigated. Meanwhile the nodularity and nodule count decreased respectively from 92 and 95 to 80% and $60/mm^2$ with increased thickness, the volume fractions of graphite, pearlite and ferrite didn't change much and were in the ranges of 12.0-13.5, 52.6-55.0 and 33.0-35.2, respectively. Hardness, tensile strength and elongation in the mechanical properties of the castings of brake caliper were BHN 241, 710 MPa and 9.5%, respectively.

  • This study presents a methodology to predict the hardenability of quenched carbon steels. The equation of transient heat conduction is analyzed to formulate a cooling curve by a finite element method which incorperates coupled effects of temperature on physical properties, the metallic structures and also the latent heat by phase transformation. The volume traction of martensite and pearlite are the structural analysis for hardenability analysis. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of adopting a full quench model respectively. This procedure could be used as the database for optimal condition of heat treatment processes.

  • The effect of the microstructure of gray cast iron on friction properties was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Cast iron samples used in this investigation were obtained from "step block" castings, which were designed to produce microstructure with different graphite flake morphologies from different cooling rate and solidification rate. Results of this work showed that the gray cast iron disks with long graphite flakes showed less fading. The rotors containing smaller amounts of ferrite showed higher friction coefficient and better fade resistance than others.an others.

  • This research proposes FEM analysis for Tandem welding process used in wind tower and predicts optimal welding process to improve the stability of welded structures. Three dimensional elasto-plastic analyses are employed to evaluate thermo-mechanical behavior of residual stress and deformation during Tandem welding for different distance between two touches. To confirm the thermal distribution, Goldak's ellipse heat source model and the real size wind tower pipe model are utilized. Four different analyses are being performed, where in each case the distance between two electrode torches is being changed and residual stress and welding deformation are predicted. Depending on base material state, each case is divided into: Liquid (100mm), Austenite+Liquid (200mm), Austenite+Cementite (400mm), Pearlite+Cementite (800mm).

  • Microstructures and tensile properties of low carbon steels, 5083 Al alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were examined in order to understand their deformation response associated with a formation of an ultrafine grained (UFG) structure. Room temperature tensile properties of UFG low carbon ferrite/pearlite steels and UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel were compared for exploring a feasibility enhancing the strain hardening capability of UFG materials. In addition, low temperature and high strain rate superplasticity of the two grades of the UFG 5083 Al alloy, and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were presented. From the analysis of a series of experiments, it was found that UFG materials exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties compared to coarse grained counterparts.

  • Continuous cooling transformation behaviors were studied fur low carbon HSLA steels containing three different level $(1\~3\;wt\%)$ of Ni addition. Thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) simulations to construct continuous cooling (CCT) diagram were conducted by using Gleeble system. As cooling rate increased, pearlite, granular bainite, acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite and lath martensite were transformed from deformed austenite. Fully bainitic microstructure were developed at all cooling rate condition in high Ni containing steel due to hardenability increasing effects of Ni. Ni also influenced the transformation kinetics. At the slowest cooling rate of $0.3^{\circ}C/s$, transformation delayed with decreasing Ni contents because of the diffusion of substitutional alloy elements. However, cooling rate slightly increased to $1^{\circ}C/s$, transformation kinetics accelerated with decreasing Ni contents because nucleation of bainite was sluggish due to hardening of residual austenite.
