  • A study was performed to investigate the properties of base metal and weldment for two HSLA steels and one HY-100 steel. Tensile, yield strength and elongation of HSLA-A steel were superior to those of HY-100 steel and yield ratios in HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were higher than HY-100 steel owing to the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. The impact energy of HSLA-A steel was greater at all aging temperatures than that of HY-100 steel. HSLA-A and HY-100 steels had low impact transition temperature of about -l$25^{\circ}C$ and high upper shelf energy, The peak hardness of weldment in HSLA-A, HSLA-B and HY-100 steels were Hv 299, Hv 275 and Hv 441, respectively. The hardenability of HY-100 steel was largest due to the higher amount of carbon. The y-groove test showed that HSLA steels had superior resistance to cold cracking. Toughness of weld joint at the F. L. and F. L. +1mm in HSLA-A was almost the same as HY-100, but those at F. L.+3mm and F. L.+5mm was greater in HSLA-A steel.

  • Recently, the pile driving or blasting works are increasingly done in many areas to perform large scale construction projects. The vibrations from these blasting works may affect the properties of concrete, especially young concrete. The purpose of present study is to explore the effects of vibration at early ages on the properties of concrete. To this end, comprehensive experimental study is conducted in the present study. The major test variables are peak particle velocity or vibration velocity and the age at vibration. The compressive strengths and bond strengths are measured for all the specimens at 28days after casting. The duration of vibration is fixed to 30 minutes for all cases. The results indicate that the strength increases for vibration velocity less than about 0.25cm/sec and decreases for vibration velocity larger than 0.5cm/sec. The effect of age at vibration is not pronounced and shows almost similar behavior for the age at vibration of 0 to 12 hours range. The present study provides some important guidelines to control the construction or vehicle vibrations for the concrete at very early ages.

  • The effects of green tea powder (GTP) on the rheological properties of dough and gelatinization characteristics were evaluated by farinograph, extensograph, amylograph and DSC. The flours used were high strength flour (HF: 12.5% protein) and blend of 50% high strength flour and 50% low strength flour (HLF: 10.5% protein). As the amount of GTP increased, water absorption, development time and weakness of the dough decreased for both flours, but dough stability increased only for HLF; the extension of the dough decreased but the resistance to extension increased. The pasting temperature increased and maximum viscosity decreased. On the other hand, with the addition of green tea extract to the wheat starch, transition onset temperature, transition peak temper-ature and enthalpy decreased, demonstrating that catechins in green tea facilitate the starch crystal melting.

  • High temperature deformation behavior of Fe-28Al-5Cr alloy has been investigated known to show anomalous temperature dependence of yield strength. Specifically, the effect of Cr addition has been examined. A series of tensile and load relaxation tests have been carried out to obtain the flow behavior of Fe-28Al-5Cr alloy at the elevated temperatures. The flow curves have then been analyzed using the inelastic deformation theory recently proposed. Firstly, high temperature flow stress of iron aluminides can be resolved into internal stress and frictional stress. Secondly, the temperature corresponding to peak strength gets higher level at faster strain rate, which presumably due to the increased contribution of internal stress in observed flow stress. And thirdly, the alloying of Cr seems to cause solid-solution strengthening of frictional stress level and the elevation of 2nd order transition temperature. In this analogy, Fe-28Al-5Cr exhibits better strength especially at relatively higher temperature and lower strain rate than Fe-28Al.

  • To investigate the seismic performance of Y-shaped eccentrically braced frames fabricated with high-strength steel (Y-HSS-EBFs), a shake table test of a 1:2 scaled three-story Y-HSS-EBF specimen was performed. The input wave for the shake table test was generated by the ground motions of El Centro, Taft, and Lanzhou waves. The dynamic properties, acceleration, displacement, and strain responses were obtained from the test specimen and compared with previous test results. In addition, a finite element model of the test specimen was established using the SAP2000 software. Results from the numerical analysis were compared with the test specimen results. During the shake table test, the specimen exhibited sufficient overall structural stiffness and safety but suffered some localized damage. The lateral stiffness of the structure degenerated during the high seismic intensity earthquake. The maximum elastic and elastoplastic interstory drift of the test specimen for different peak ground accelerations were 1/872 and 1/71, respectively. During the high seismic intensity earthquake, the links of the test specimen entered the plastic stage to dissipate the earthquake energy, while other structural members remained in the elastic stage. The Y-HSS-EBF is a safe, dual system with reliable seismic performance. The numerical analysis results were in useful agreement with the test results. This finding indicated that the finite element model in SAP2000 provided a very accurate prediction of the Y-HSS-EBF structure's behavior during the seismic loadings.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate and analyze the behaviour of prestressed I section structural members constructed with ultra high perfomance steel fiber reinforced cementitious concrete (SFR-UHPC). This material is known as reactive powder concrete (RPC) mixed with domestic materials and its compressive strength is over 150MP. The parameters of test specimens were span to depth ratio, prestressing force, prestressing wire placement and web width. Most influential parameter to determine the failure mode between shear and flexural action was proved to be shear span ratio. The characteristics of ultra high-strength concrete is basically brittle, but due to the steel fiber reinforcement behaviour of this structure member became ductile after the peak load. As a result of the test, the stress block of compressive zone should be redefined. The proposed analytical calculation of internal force capacity based by plastic analysis gave a good prediction for the shear and flexural strength of specimens. The numerical verification of the finite element model which constitutive law developed for Mode I fracture of fiber reinforced concrete correctly captured the overall behaviour of the specimens tested.

  • In this paper, a finite element model (FEM) in ATENA-3D software was constructed to investigate the behavior of circular ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) filled steel tube stub columns (UHPC-FSTCs) under concentric loading on concrete core. The "CC3DNonLinCementitious2User" material type for concrete in ATENA-3D software with some modifications of material laws, was adopted to model for UHPC core with consideration the confinement effect. The experimental results obtained from Schneider (2006) were then employed to verify the accuracy of FEM. Extensive parametric analysis was also conducted to examine the influence of concrete compressive strength, steel tube thickness and steel yield strength on the compressive behavior of short circular UHPC-FSTCs. It can be observed that the columns with thicker steel tube show better strength and ductility, the sudden drop of load after initial peak load can be prevented. Based on the regression analysis of the results from parametric study, simplified formulae for predicting ultimate loads and strains were proposed and verified by comparing with previous analytical models, design codes and experimental results.

  • The muscle strengths in various postures are still used in the workplace, although mechanization and automation have been continuously accomplished. The aim of this study is to measure the maximum muscle strength and analyze the muscle fatigue during the various wrench jobs which are one of the upper limbs related works. Four hundreds and eighty five college students (243 males and 242 females) participated in this study. Twelve muscle strengths which are using for pulling, pushing, lifting and lowering the wrench with various postures are measured. For every moment, the muscle strengths for both hands were measured. In each measurement, five seconds averaged value and peak value were collected. The averaged value of preferred hand and non-preferred hand was compared. Also, the averaged value of opposite movement was compared through t-test. The fatigue of agonist for each movement was analyzed using EMG analysis. The result of this study can provide some basic information not only in designing the tools in work but also in selection, training and management of workers.

  • The addition of a limestone filler(LF) to fill into the voids between cement and aggregate particles can reduce the cementitious paste volume. This paper aim to evaluate the influence of LF contents on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength. Hydration kinetics were evaluate using heat of hydration, ignition loss and thermal analysis. The heat of hydration was measured using Isothermal Calorimetry. The degree of hydration was measured using ignition loss. Hydration product analysis was carried out by Thermal Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis. The results show that the addition of LF reduces not only the initial setting time and heat of hydration peak, also degree of hydration and rate of strength development at early age increase with the addition of LF. It can be concluded the LF fills the pore between cement particles due to formation of carboaluminate, which may accelerate the setting of cement pastes.

  • A bipolar plate is an important component in a fuel cell in the sense of cost and weight. This study aimed at developing highly conductive, lightweight, and low cost bipolar plates. Hybrid carbons filled poly(phenylene sulfide)(PPS) composite bipolar plates were prepared by using the compression molding technique. Various types and amounts of conducting carbon fillers such as graphite, carbon black, carbon fibers, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were adopted for the composites. Electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the composites were measured in order to investigate effects of each components of fillers. When the graphite is only used as a conducting filler, the electrical conductivity of the composites increases with increasing the content, but the flexural strength decreases dramatically. However, for CNTs and carbon fibers, the flexural strength initially increases and then decreases with increasing the amount of the conducting fillers. The amount of graphite corresponding to the peak of flexural strength was moved to lower content with increasing the amount of CNTs or carbon fiber. When hybrid conducting fillers such as fibrous and particulate fillers were used, the synergy effect in mechanical and electrical properties was observed.
