  • The Impact Echo method can be used to measure the thickness of concrete plate like structures. Measurements are based on the identification of a clear thickness resonance frequency which can be difficult in very thick or highly attenuative plates. In this study the detectability of the measured resonant frequency is enhanced by time domain summation of signals with different source receiver spacing. The proposed method is based on the spatial and temporal properties of the first higher symmetric zero group velocity Lamb mode (S1-ZGV) which are described in detail. No application dependent tuning or filtering is needed which makes the method robust and suitable for implementation in automatic IE thickness measurements. The proposed technique is exemplified with numerical data and field data from a thick concrete wall and a highly attenuative asphalt concrete layer.

  • Seasonal changes in microzooplankton abundance were identified in the mesohaline Chesapeake Bay and several tributaries from July 1992 through December 1995. Ciliates numerically dominated, comprising over 90% of the total microzooplankton density and aloricate ciliates usually outnumbered loricate ciliates. Copepod nauplii accounted for the highest microzooplankton biomass (>75% in dry weight). Rotifers made small contributions to the total microzooplankton density and biomass (<5%). Time series analysis indicated a twelve month cycle in microzooplankton abundance, and mid-summer(August) peaks for copepod nauplii, and a spring through fall peaks (May-October) for ciliates. Rotifers showed two seasonal peaks: one in mid-summer(August) at the river stations and the other in mid-winter(February) at the mesohaline stations. Seasonal peaks of copepod nauplii and rotifers coincided with the mesozooplankton abundance peak. On the other hand, ciliate maximum usually occurred between the phytoplankton and mesozooplankton peaks. This pattern of microzooplankton seasonality suggests the intermediate trophic role of microzooplankton (especially ciliates) between the phytoplankton(especially picophytoplankton) and mesozooplankton in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

  • Mass spectral fragmentations of six chlorinated organophosphorus pesticides were investigated using electron impact mass spectrometry. Understanding the fragmentation pathways, based on the fragment ions of mass spectra, should be useful in the structural elucidation and chemical identification of these compounds. The pro-posed fragmentation pathways were verified by collision-induced dissociation B/E-linked scan spectra. ln most cases, the structures of characteristic fragment ions could be expected by the observation of the peak clusters due to 35Cl and 37Cl isotopes. According to substituted groups on phosphorus atom, phosphate and phospho-rothioate exhibited significantIy differentfragmentation patterns. Especially, phosphate and phosphorothioate with diethyl ester produced more diverse fragment ions than that with dimethyl ester.

  • An experiment was performed using the large-scale test facility (LSTF), which simulated a 1% vessel upper head small-break loss-of-coolant accident with an accident management (AM) measure under an assumption of total-failure of high-pressure injection (HPI) system in a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In the LSTF test, liquid level in the upper head affected break flow rate. Coolant was manually injected from the HPI system into cold legs as the AM measure when the maximum core exit temperature reached 623 K. The cladding surface temperature largely increased due to late and slow response of the core exit thermocouples. The AM measure was confirmed to be effective for the core cooling. The RELAP5/MOD3.3 code indicated insufficient prediction of primary coolant distribution. The author conducted uncertainty analysis for the LSTF test employing created phenomena identification and ranking table for each component. The author clarified that peak cladding temperature was largely dependent on the combination of multiple uncertain parameters within the defined uncertain ranges.

  • This study analyzed the peak time of drought severity and drought period using meteorological and hydrological drought indices. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) using rainfall data was used for meteorological drought and Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) and Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) using streamflow data were used for the hydrological drought. This study was applied to the Cheongmicheon watershed which is a mixture area for rural and urban regions. The rainfall data period used in this study is 32.5 years (January of 1985~June of 2017) and the corresponding streamflow was simulated using SWAT. After the drought indices were calculated using the collected data, the characteristics of drought were analyzed by time series distribution of the calculated drought indices. Based on the results of the this study, it can be seen that hydrological drought occurs after meteorological drought. The difference between SDI and SPI peak occurrence time, difference in drought start date and average drought duration is greater than SSI and SPI. In general, SSI shows more severe than SDI. Therefore, various drought indices should be used at the identification of drought characteristics.

  • Moraxella sp. CK-l is known to inhibits the growth of Anabaena cylindrica, a cyanobacterium. It has been documented that the ability of this growth inhibition of Anabaena cylindrica was attributed to extracellular autolysin from Moraxella sp. CK-l. However, it remains to be elucidated identification and characterization of autolysin have yet been elucidated. In this study, we tried to purify and identify autolysin secreted from Moraxella sp. CK-l. Cells were grown in a complex liquid medium (BGC-11) and culture supernatants were collected, followed by ammonium sulfate fractionation. Fractions were further separated with anion exchange column, Mono-Q, in FPLC system and analyzed by SDS/PAGE. The fraction containing high autolysin activity showed a single distinct protein peak in anion column and molecular mass of about 17 kDa in SDS/PAGE. Nterminal amino acid sequencing of the protein was analyzed, of which result showed the homology with some proteases, including extracellular serine protease, Dichelobacter nodosus.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) analyses were conducted for the detection of different irradiated dried fishes. All the non-irradiated samples provided PSL counts of lower than 700 (negative: $T_1$). Clear identification of irradiated sample was only possible for irradiated anchovy with PSL counts >5000; however, the results were unsatisfactory (not positive) for irradiated cod, dried filefish, hairtail, and herring samples. The contaminating silicate minerals were obtained by density separation or acid hydrolysis to perform TL analysis, which resulted in a low intensity of TL glow curve with a maximum peak after $250^{\circ}C$ for the non-irradiated samples that are irrespective of their kinds and methods for the mineral separation. The TL glow curves of high intensity with maximum peak in the temperature range of $150-250^{\circ}C$ were observed for all the irradiated samples. However, better results of TL glow curves and particularly of the TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) were obtained when the minerals were separated by a acid hydrolysis method.

  • Soybean seeds contain high amounts of isoflavones that display biological effects and isoflavone content of soybean seed can vary by year, environment, and genotype. Objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci that underlie isoflavone content in soybean seeds. The study involved 85 $F_2$ populations derived from Korean soybean cultivar 'Kwangkyo' and wild type soybean 'IT182305' for QTL analysis associated with isoflavone content. Isoflavone content of seeds was determined by HPLC. The genetic map of 33 linkage groups with 207 markers was constructed. The linkage map spanned 2,607.5 cM across all 33 linkage groups. The average linkage distance between pair of markers among all linkage groups was 12.6 cM in Kosambi map units. Isoflavone content in $F_2$ generations varied in a fashion that suggested a continuous, polygenic inheritance. Eleven markers (4 RAPD, 3 SSR, 4 AFLP) were significantly associated with isoflavone content. Only two markers, Satt419 and CTCGAG3 had F-tests that were significant at P<0.01 in $F_2$ generation for isoflavone content. Interval mapping using the $F_2$ data revealed only two putative QTLs for isoflavone content. The peak QTL region on linkage group 3, which was near OPAG03c, explained $14\%$ variation for isoflavone content. The peak QTL region on linkage group 5, which was located near OPN14 accounted for $35.3\%$ variation for isoflavone content. Using both Map-Maker-QTL $(LOD{\geq}2.0)$ and single-factor analysis $(P{\leq}0.05)$, one marker, CTCGAG3 in linkage group 3 was associated with QTLs for isoflavone content. This information would then be used in identification of QTLs for isoflavone content with precision

  • Conventional fingerprint powders used during crime scene investigations pose potential health hazards. Thus, multiple natural replacement powders, including squid ink powder, indigo and rice powder were used to develop (visualize) latent fingerprints on non-porous surfaces (e.g., glass, plastic and tile). Fingerprints developed using the natural powders were compared using the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) with those developed with traditional black powder. The peak areas of ridges were also compared using densitometric image analyses. Collectively, objective and quantitative evaluation methods were developed. The effectiveness of natural powders varied depending on the surface but, in general, squid ink powder performed well on most surfaces. Indigo powder performed well on tile surfaces, while rice powder performed well on glass surfaces. Plastic was the most difficult surface from which to develop fingerprints. Image analysis using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) demonstrated the importance of the size and shape of natural powder particles to properly adhere to the ridges. Although densitometric image analyses did not correlate the number of minutiae and ridge peak areas, an unbiased, objective evaluation method would be possible using image analyses with a reference image. Additional experimentation will yield safe and cost-effective natural powders with which adequate fingerprint development can be performed.

  • Aim of this study is to identify dyestuff of the Dallryeong(official's robe in Joseon Dynasty, 16th century) excavated from Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, in 1996. For this purpose, extracted dyestuffs from Dallryeong fabric and from natural dyestuffs for red color(safflower, Sapanwood, Madder) which are presumed to have been used in the Dallryeong, are analyzed and compared by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). As a result, HPLC chromatogram of extracts of the Dallryeong's dyestuff and safflower are showed a peak at 17.5 minutes. The UV/Vis spectra of the samples are showed the maximum absorption wavelength at 519nm. This result is identical with the analysis of the previous studies on red dyestuff of safflower. In addition, the analysis of Mass Spectrometry(MS) showed the identical result of the peak with m/z 910. Following these results, excavated pink Dallryeong were considered to have been dyed with safflower.
