We propose the use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm for the improvement of measurement accuracy in wavelengthscanned Fabry-Perot filter based demodulation systems. The peak locations of FBG sensors were calculated from the fitted curves rather than from distorted PD profiles, resulting in much better measurement accuracy than that of the highest-peak search algorithm. Also, the algorithm was proved to minimize measurement uncertainty of spectrally-distorted grating sensors. From our experimental results, a temperature resolution as small as ${\sim}0.3^{\circ}C$ was readily achieved by use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm whereas the highest-peak search algorithm gave a temperature resolution larger than ${\sim}4^{\circ}C$.

An improved method of spectrum detection algorithm for mass spectrum analysis system is proposed. In the conventional spectrum detection algorithm that utilizes the results of the linear approximation and quadratic curve fitting on the ion signal block of each mass index, it is possible to reduce the detection error in the mass spectrum detection by further improving the condition of eliminating the invalid ion signals. Also, the proposed method can reduce the estimation error of the peak value of the mass spectrum by using the result of quadratic curve fitting for the effective ion signal block in which the peak position error is corrected. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, computer simulations were carried out step by step using the measured ion signal. Also, by comparing the rate of false detection for several inputs, the proposed method showed better detection performance than the conventional method.
Plasma-polymerized acrylic acid films were deposited on Si wafer and KBr pellet by remote plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Effects of plasma power, reaction pressure, indirect plasma method on the growth rate, chemical structure, and chemical bonding state of the films were investigated. Chemical structure and chemical state of the films were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and curve fitting technique. Growth rate of the film increased to a saturation value with plasma power of 100 W, but showed the maximum with reaction pressure at 300 mtorr. Whenever W/FM factor (applied energy per gas molecule) increased by increasing plasma power or lowering pressure, the fragmentation of acrylic acid molecules was promoted. From the XPS curve fitting analyses, we found that the intensity of carboxyl COO bonding peak decreased with W/FM factor, and the tendency of intensity change of carboxylic COO peak was contrary to those of ether C-O and carbonyl C=O peaks.

In the mass spectrum of the mass spectrometer, the spectrum of the low peak adjacent to the spectrum having the high peak value is connected to each other and thus the separation is difficult. This inter-spectral overlap causes degradation of the mass spectral detection performance and resolution. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the mass spectrum detection performance and peak accuracy of residual gas analyzer. The type discrimination according to the characteristics of the ion signal block and the pre-correction for the peak position error can separate and detect the spectrum of the low peak connected to the adjacent spectra. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we compared the proposed method with the conventional method in simulations using actual ion signals obtained from the mass spectrometer under development.

In recent years, a non-contact respiration and heart rates monitoring via IR-UWB radar has been paid much attention to in various applications - patient monitoring, occupancy detection, survivor exploring in disaster area, etc. In this paper, we address a novel approach of real time heart rate estimation using IR-UWB radar. We apply sine fitting and peak detection method for estimating respiration rate and heart rate, respectively. We also deploy two techniques to mitigate the error caused by wrong estimation of respiration rate: a moving average filter and finding the frequency of the highest occurrence. Experimental results show that the algorithm can estimate heart rate in real time when respiration rate is presumed to be estimated accurately.
In existing method, the threshold has determined the points to be used in extrapolation and only pre-peak points were used to find t0. However, to reduce error in using this fitting method, in this study, finding t0is considered the correlation between fitting result and each profile in using iteration method. And the proposed method is compared with the existing method.
In this study, the $CaSO_4:Eu$ TLDs are fabricated and their trap parameters are determined. The optimum concentration of Eu for fabrication of the $CaSO_4:Eu$ TLD is 0.5 mol% and optimum temperature is $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours sintering in air. The glow curve of $CaSO_4:Eu$ consists of two glow peaks and these peaks are isolated by thermal bleaching method. Trap parameters of two glow peaks are measured using the initial rise, the peak shape, the heating rate and the least square curve fitting methods. The activation energies of the glow peak I and II are 1.00 eV and 1.09 eV, and the frequency factors are $7.04{\times}10^{11}\;s^{-1}$ and $5.12{\times}10^{11}\;s^{-1}$ and the kinetic orders are 1.11 and 1.33, respectively.

This paper proposes a method to improve the mass spectral detection performance of the residual gas analyzer. By improving the mode estimation method for setting the threshold value and improving the additive noise elimination method, it is possible to detect mass spectrums having low peak values of the threshold level difficult to distinguish from noise. Ion signal blocks for each mass index with noise removed by the improved method are effective for eliminating invalid ion signals based on the linear and quadratic fittings. The mass spectrum can be obtained from the quadratic fitted curves for the reconstructed ion signal block using only the valid ion signals. In addition, the resolution of the mass spectrum can be improved by correcting the error caused by the shift of the spectral peak position. To verify the performance of the proposed method, computer simulations were performed using real ion signals obtained from the residual gas analysis system under development. The simulation results show that the proposed method is valid.
When generating spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion in engineering practices, the effect of the variation in fitting parameters on the distribution of the peak ground displacement (PGD) has not yet drawn enough attention. In this study, a method for simulating ground motion matching for multiple targets is developed. In this method, a frequency-dependent amplitude envelope function with statistical parameters is introduced to simulate the nonstationarity of the frequency in earthquake ground motion. Then, several groups of time-history acceleration with different temporal and spectral nonstationarities were generated to analyze the effect of nonstationary parameter variations on the distribution of PGD. The following conclusions are drawn from the results: (1) In the simulation of spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion, if the acceleration time-history is generated with random initial phases, the corresponding PGD distribution is quite discrete and an uncertain number of PGD values lower than the limit value are observed. Nevertheless, the mean values of PGD always meet the requirement in every group. (2) If the nonstationary frequencies of the ground motion are taken into account when fitting the target spectrum, the corresponding PGD values will increase. A correlation analysis shows that the change in the mean and the dispersion values, from before the frequencies are controlled to after, correlates with the modal parameters of the predominant frequencies. (3) Extending the maximum period of the target spectrum will increase the corresponding PGD value and, simultaneously, decrease the PGD dispersion. Finally, in order to control the PGD effectively, the ground motion simulation method suggested in this study was revised to target a specified PGD. This novel method can generate ground motion that satisfies not only the required precision of the target spectrum, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and nonstationarity characteristics of the ground motion but also meets the required limit of the PGD, improving engineering practices.
An empirical functional form was suggested for the analysis of the emission spectrum of high-power light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a sharp blue peak from the LED chips and a broad yellow peak from the phosphor layer. The peak positions, half widths, shape parameters, and amplitudes of these two peaks were reliably obtained as a function of the temperature, and the results were discussed qualitatively in relation with the junction temperature. The adoption of an inert liquid was found to have significantly reduced the LED temperature and the color shift of the emitted light. The phenomenological approach used in this study may be helpful in the simulation of the LED spectrum under various thermal conditions, and may thus be helpful in the improvement of the device performance.
