Our country is consuming huge source of revenue to improve geometric structure of road with a view to improve safety of the road. However, it is more efficient to provide high-quality pavement markings to the road users. For this purpose, in this study, it is considered the optical theory related to retroreflectivity of pavement marking along with the our country's study literature and foreign. And also considered ur country standard related to pavement marking, made pavement marking sample and measured retroreflectivety. For the experiment, it is selected colors of normal temperature-type paints, grading and content of glass bead as experiment factors. After it is made the same conditions like construction spot, measured retroreflectivity according to the combination of factors and analyzed the optimization of factors.
Pavement markings delineate driver's sight and attentions at day and night. Retroreflectivities of the pavement markings are known to be affected by some factors such as geometrical characteristics of road sections, marking materials, traffic volumes, weather, and so on. Therefore, pavement markings would have different retroreflectivities place by place. The objective of this paper is to contend that there are rises and falls of retroreflectivity of specific geometrical characteristics of road section based on observed field data. For this purpose, retroreflectivities of yellow continued lines and white skip lines were measured on the freeway sections from Hanam to Nami interchanges. And then, the sections are categorized based on road geometric or facility types. From this study, it may be concluded that there exist considerably lower retroreflectivity trends of pavement markings at sharply curved sections, climbing lane sections, ramp sections, and tunnel sections than averaged retroreflectivity trends on freeway sections. This may leads to the necessity of differential pavement marking managements.

In this paper, a detection method of a pedestrian safety road marking was proposed. The proposed algorithm uses laser range and reflectivity of a range finder (LRF). For a detection of crosswalk marking and stop line, the DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) of reflectivity and cross-correlation method between the reference replica and the measured reflectivity are used. A speed bump is detected through measuring an altitude difference of two LRFs which have the different tilted angle. Furthermore, we proposed a velocity constrained a detection method of a speed bump. Finally, the proposed methods are tested in on-line, on the pavement of a road. The considered road markings are wholly detected. The localization errors of both road markings are smaller than 0.4 meter.

Road conditions which obstruct the driver from seeing road markings, such as in the evening or in the rain, due to the lack of a light source gives way to increasing the risk of traffic accidents. In order to increase road safety, the Korea Expressway Corporation set up a pilot project which used high-quality materials along a section of the Gyeongbu Expressway between Daejeon and Pangyo. There is little research on high-quality materials in the field of pavement marking. This study introduces high-quality materials used in pavement materials, presents the results of a survey conducted to examine the effect of the pilot project and analyzes traffic accident data from before and after the implementation of the pilot project. The survey results show that 87% of the respondents were highly satisfied with the pilot project. With the goal of evaluating the effect of the pilot project, this study used traffic accident data provided by the Korea Expressway Corporation accident data and performed a before-after study of the number of traffic. The results of data analysis show that there were 62 and 48 traffic accidents before and after the implementation of the pilot project. In addition, the result of Emperical Bayes Method indicates that there is an 41.7% decrease in the number of traffic accidents as an effect of High-quality Pavement Marking Materials.
The study documents the analysis on characters and symbols shown in the pavement markings in the perspective of mathematics educators. The purpose of this study is to propose a pavement marking method that can enhance readability from the driver's eye position. To this end, this study analyzed the figure of the pavement markings that can be actually recognized by the projective geometry perspective. As a result, it proposed alternatives to the current pavement markings by introducing the concept of the compression ratio. Results of the study are as follows. First, the rule was established to obtain the compression ratio. If the observation of two viewing angles are x and y, then the compression ratio S is ${\sin}y/{\cos}\(\frac{x-y}{2}\)$. Second, we presented two alternatives to the pavement marking method for the displayed information. One is a method for improving the pavement markings in terms of the compression ratio, the other is a method by varying vertical length of the pavement markings while holding its width constant. Based on the outcomes from this study, a mathematical analysis can be further studied for the perception of speed according to the types of pavement marking line.

PURPOSES: Speeding is often the primary contributor to fatal crashes. Surprisingly, driving behaviors are indirectly affected by personal factors such as law-abidance, risk sensitivity, and situational adaptability. This research aims to verify the effectiveness of pavement markings at reducing the speeds of high-risk drivers. The purpose of this study is to establish how drivers (including law-abiding or law-breaking, high-risk or low-risk) react to different pavement markings in a driving simulator. METHODS: The five different pavement markings were selected from markings used in other nations. The forty-two drivers were then surveyed, via questionnaires, and placed into the corresponding groups. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted to determine the extent of speed reduction for each pavement marking. RESULTS: Higher speeds were linked to the high-risk drivers. Furthermore, after analysis of the mean difference of average speeds by pavement marking, it was determined that Dragon's Teeth had the greatest speed reducing effect on these drivers. CONCLUSIONS: Perceptual countermeasures are unlikely to strongly affect high-risk drivers' perception of speed on the curves. This statistically demonstrates that Dragon's Teeth have a subtle effect on reducing speeds in the driving simulator. This study's significance lies in the improved understanding of high-risk drivers in terms of road facilities. It approaches the effects of various patterns of pavement markings for high-risk drivers.
Effective use of traffic marking can lead to driver's safer driving by speed management and visibility enhancement. One of the critical factors in designing traffic marking is how to incorporate human factor issues into the design process. This study presented a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of Hi-pass marking on Korean freeways based on kansei engineering. Hi-pass marking scenarios made by a virtual reality tool were used to evaluate the user's perceptions. Various combination of chevron angles and peripheral transverse(PT) bars were used for the evaluation. The results show that the most effective scenario is a combination of 60 degree chevron angle and an askew parallelogramshaped PT bar shaped. It is expected that the proposed method and outcome will be useful for making safer driving maneuvers.

Traffic pavement markings are one of primary transportation facilities that provide drivers with various road information directly. Thus, a clear understanding of traffic pavement markings is utmost important to improve traffic safety as well as to establish a proper traffic culture. However, no past studies examined drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings in Korea. Hence, this study investigated drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings through an elaborated administrated survey, and analyzed the relationship between various drivers' characteristics and understanding regarding pavement marking via cross-classification table and logistic model. The analysis results show that drivers have limited understanding regarding the purpose of the markings. Specifically, the average understanding of pavement markings is 57.41%: the lowest understanding is 25.88% for yield pavement marking, and the highest understanding is 91.18% for advanced pedestrian crosswalk pavement marking. This study also revealed that the understanding of some pavement markings are somewhat influenced by user group such as drivers with suspended or revoked driver licenses, but the overall understanding of pavement markings are not significantly affected by drivers' characteristics such as gender and driving experiences at ${\alpha}$=0.05. Thus, it might be desirable for policy makers to establish pavement marking-related policies for overall drivers rather than specific drivers.
Performances of retroreflectivity vary place to place, according to traffic volumes and time lengths after striping, depending on pavement marking materials and colors. The present paper uses the nation wide data of retroreflectivity, which has been collected from freeways and then tries to develop the regression curve setting traffic volume and service life as independent variables and retroreflectivities as dependent variables. The DB system includes two year's measurement in $2005{\sim}2006$ over Korean freeway pavement marking at an interval of three months for the period. The mobile measurement system, a laserlux, was employed for the purpose. The DB has provided a lot of information about materials and performance of the specific pavement marking such as geometric features, traffic volumes, material characteristics and the installation date. This study provides the comparison of pavement marking performances under diversified conditions. Based on accumulated pavement marking performances, this study provides performance curves based on the diversified factors. The goal of the retroreflectivity modeling is to develop equations that can be used to estimate an average retroreflectivity of pavement markings as a function time since application and traffic volume. After representing the variation of retroreflectivities and estimating regression curves by linear, exponential, logarithmic and power function, the regression curve which had the highest coefficient of determination and the value similar to the last field measurement was regarded as the retroreflectivity decay model. As a result of verification, the decay model showed the signification within the 90% confidence level and especially showed the clear relation with field data according to increase of cumulative vehicle exposure. Accordingly, these models can be used to determine service lives, retroreflectivity degradation rates, and retroreflectivity of new markings.

Lane marking detection is one of important issues in the field of autonomous mobile robot. Especially, in urban environment, like pavement roads of downtown or tour tracks of Science Park, which have continuous patterns on the surface of the road, the lane marking detection becomes more important ability. Although there were many researches about lane detection and lane tracing, many of them used vision sensors mainly to detect lane marking. In this paper, we obtain 2 dimensional library data of 'Intensity' and 'Distance' using one laser rangefinder only. We design a simple classifier and filtering algorithm for the lane detection which uses only one LRF (Laser Range Finder). Allowing extended usage of LRF, this research provides more functionality not only in range finding but also in lane detecting to mobile robots. This work will be technically helpful for robot developers to design more simple and efficient autonomous driving system using LRF.
