Surface temperature has been derived from the MODIS/ASTER airborne simulator (MASTER) mid-wave infrared single channel data using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model with input data including the University of Wisconsin (UW) emissivity, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, and solar and line-of-sight geometry. We have selected the study area that covers some surface types such as water, sand, agricultural (vegetated) land, and clouds. Results of the current study show the reasonable geographical distribution of surface temperature over land and water similar to the pattern of the MASTER L2 surface temperature. The thorough quantitative validation of surface temperature retrieved from this study is somehow limited due to the lack of in-situ measurements. One point comparison at the Salton Sea buoy shows that the present estimate is 1.8 K higher than the field data. Further comparison with the MASTER L2 surface temperature over the study area reveals statistically good agreement with mean differences of 4.6 K between two estimates. We further analyze the surface temperature differences between two estimates and find primary factors to be emissivity and atmospheric correction.
The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the heat transfer efficiency of using copper pipe, stainless pipe and traditional PE pipe commonly used for geothermal heat exchanger, with aims at seeking improved methods. In addition, the varying efficiency of heat transfer from ground heat and groundwater heat was assessed and its applicability was discussed. Design parameters for empirical field study were derived by controlling flow rate, velocity and caliber of pipes of the heat exchanger after the thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger material was evaluated. The heat exchange efficiency and effective thermal conductivity were measured with changing pattern through field thermal efficiency and thermal response test. Experimental results show that the metal material showed higher heat transfer efficiency than the PE pipe. Although the heat transfer efficiency was not high with the increase of the pipe diameter in the flow rate, it was high with the increase of the pipe diameter in the velocity.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to do numerical analysis of the wavelength dependence in low level laser therapy (LLLT) using a finite element method (FEM). Methods: Numerical analysis of heat transfer based on a Pennes' bioheat equation was performed to assess the wavelength dependence of effects of LLLT in a single layer and in multilayered tissue that consists of skin, fat and muscle. The three different wavelengths selected, 660 nm, 830 nm and 980 nm, were ones that are frequently used in clinic settings for the therapy of musculoskeletal disorders. Laser parameters were set to the power density of 35.7 W/$cm^2$, a spot diameter of 0.06 cm, and a laser exposure time of 50 seconds for all wavelengths. Results: Temperature changes in tissue based on a heat transfer equation using a finite element method were simulated and were dominantly dependent upon the absorption coefficient of each tissue layer. In the analysis of a single tissue layer, heat generation by fixed laser exposure at each wavelength had a similar pattern for increasing temperature in both skin and fat (980 nm > 660 nm > 830 nm), but in the muscle layer 660nm generated the most heat (660 nm ${\gg}$ 980 nm > 830 nm). The heat generation in multilayered tissue versus penetration depth was shown that the temperature of 660 nm wavelength was higher than those of 830 nm and 980 nm Conclusion: Numerical analysis of heat transfer versus penetration depth using a finite element method showed that the greatest amount of heat generation is seen in multilayered tissue at = 660 nm. Numerical analysis of heat transfer may help lend insight into thermal events occurring inside tissue layers during low level laser therapy.
Nanofabrication is an essential process throughout industry. Technologies that produce general nanofabrication, such as e-beam lithography, dip-pen lithography, DUV lithography, immersion lithography, and laser interference lithography, have drawbacks including complicated processes, low throughput, and high costs, whereas nano-transfer printing (nTP) is inexpensive, simple, and can produce patterns on non-plane substrates and multilayer structures. In general nTP, the coherency of gold-deposited stamps is strengthened by using SAM treatment on substrates, so the gold patterns are transferred from stamps to substrates. However, it is hard to apply to transfer other metallic materials, and the existing nTP process requires a complicated surface treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to simplify the nTP technology to obtain an easy and simple method for fabricating metal patterns. In this paper, asnTP process with poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) mold was proposed without any chemical treatment. At first, a PVA mold was duplicated from the master mold. Then, a Mo layer, with a thickness of 20 nm, was deposited on the PVA mold. The Mo deposited PVA mold was put on the Si wafer substrate, and nTP process progressed. After the nTP process, the PVA mold was removed using DI water, and transferred Mo nano patterns were characterized by a Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) and Energy Dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
The evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of R-22 and R-407C in horizontal copper tubes were investigated experimentally. The main components of therefrigerant loop are a receiver, a compressor, a mass flow meter, a condenser and a double pipe type evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 4.3 mm and 6.4 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 100 to $300[kg/m^2s]$ and the saturation temperature of evaporator were 5 [$^{\circ}C$]. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-407C rise with the increase in mass flux and vapor quality. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-22 for inner diameter tube of 4.3 mm and 6.4 mm is about $7.3{\sim}47.1%$ and $5.68{\sim}46.6%$ higher than that of R-407C, respectively.
A new forming technology has been developed to fabricate near-net shape products using light metal. A semi-solid forming technology has some advantages compared with the conventional forming processes such as die casting squeeze casting and hot/cold forging. In this study the numerical analysis of semi-solid filling for a straight die shape and orifice die shape in gate pattern is studied on semi-solid materials(SSM) of solid fraction fs =30% in A356 aluminum alloy. The finite difference program of Navier-Stokes equation coupled with heat transfer and solidification has been developed to predict a filling pattern and the temperature distribution of SSM. The programdeveloped in this study gives die filling patterns of SSM and final solidifica-tion region.
Adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vectors have been used for gene transfer to a wide variety of cell types in vivo and in vitro. The advantages of adenovirus vectors include the high titer of virus readily obtained in large scale preparations, their ability to transduce dividing and non dividing cells, and the high level of transgene expression. Since adenovirus vectors do not integrate in host cell DNA, there is a lack of insertional mutagenesis. However, many human tumor cells lack expression of the adenovirus 5 receptors and contain areas of hypoxia. In order to identify the pattern of replication and gene expression of oncolytic adenovirus in hypoxic condition, multiple different fiber modified Ads (Ad5F/S11, Ad5F/S35, Ad5F/K7, Ad5F/K21, and Ad5F/RGD) was compared. The replication of all fiber modified adenovirus was inhibited in hypoxic condition in HEK 293 cells, but gene expression has variety on different tumor cell lines and the level of coxackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) expression. These data suggest that CAR expression pattern and hypoxic condition of tumor are considered for optimal oncolytic adenovirus application.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge creating pattern of technology catching-up and pioneering phase in the new product development process. This paper first reviews the knowledge conversion, absorptive capability, learning orientation and the trigger of learning. The paper then presents the integrative model of knowledge creating. Based on the integrative model, in-depth case analysis was conducted on the new product development process in Phicom. As a result, the paper discuss that the pattern of absorptive capability building, knowledge conversion and knowledge transfer is different from technology catching-up and pioneering phase. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
The bed combustion in an incinerator interacts with the gas flow region through heat and mass transfer. Combined bed combustion and gas flow simulations are performed to investigate this coupled interaction for various operating conditions and furnace configurations. Radiation onto the bed from the furnace is interrelated with the combustion characteristics in the bed, and is also affected by the flow pattern in the gas flow region. Since the contribution of gaseous emission to the total radiation is significant, an adequate flow pattern in a well-designed furnace shape would lead to an increased heat influx on the bed, especially in the early stage of the waste combustion. Advancing the initiation point of the waste combustion can also reduce the size of the lower gas temperature region above the bed, which can be achieved by controlling operating conditions such as the waste feeding rate, the bed height and the primary air flow distribution.
