Comparison of Contrast Sensitivity Between Soft Contact Lens Wearers and Spectacle Wearers (콘택트렌즈와 안경 착용자의 대비감도 비교)

  • The aim of the present study was to compare the contrast sensitivity of soft contact lens wearers, spectacle wearers or emmetropia. Seventy myopic eyes and thirty emmetropic eyes aged 19 to 26 years were collected. The myopic group included 48 eyes corrected with spectacle lenses and 22 eyes of them corrected with contact lenses, too: all had corrected vision acuity of 20/20 or better. Spatial contrast sensitivity was measured using the OPTEC 6500 contrast sensitivity view-in tester included the EyeView  Functional Vision Analysis software at photopic or mesoopic condition. There was no significant difference in contrast sensitivity between spectacle lenses and emmetropes. Myopes corrected with soft contact lenses showed statistical sensitivity losses at 1.5, 12 cycle/degree spatial frequencies. In conclusion, our findings suggest that loss of contrast sensitivity in soft contact lens wearers might be interpreted as evidence for corneal disruption before corneal pathological events occur in contact lens wearers. Contrast sensitivity testing appears to be a useful method for evaluating soft contact lenses.

A Case of Cyclosporine Treatment in Cat with Allergic Dermatitis, Nonresponsive to Prednisolone Treatment

  • A 2-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented to Kangwon National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with pruritus and erythema on the tips of both ears, around the eyes, and in the caudal abdomen. This patient had previously been prescribed prednisolone, but did not respond positively to the treatment. A skin screening test revealed that there were no fleas or fungi, and that only cocci were present. Blood testing revealed no remarkable findings. The patient was prescribed antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 25 mg/kg for 2 weeks) with no prednisolone. After 2 weeks, clinical signs were alleviated and the skin screening test showed no signs of cocci. However, clinical signs recurred even with the prescription of antibiotics. Four weeks after the steroid-free interval, Malassezia spp. hypersensitivity was detected upon a serum allergy test, and pathological analysis confirmed eosinophilic and mastocytic superficial dermatitis in the caudal abdomen. Based on these results, we suspected allergic dermatitis and prescribed 7 mg/kg cyclosporine A once a day. After 3 weeks, clinical signs were resolved. Seven weeks after the first trial with cyclosporine A, we reduced the cyclosporine A dose to 7 mg/kg every other day. The patient's symptoms have since been well controlled for 6 months. This study suggests that cyclosporine A can be a good choice for treating cats with suspected allergic dermatitis that has not responded positively to steroid treatment.

Hepatotoxicity Induced by Microcystin-LR in Rat

  • Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a cyanobacterial hepatotoxin mainly produced by Microcystis aeruginosa. The current study examined the effects of a single intraperitoneal dose of MC-LR in rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were intraperitoneally injected with MC-LR ($100{\mu}g/kg$ body weight) and they were sacrificed at 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 min, or 12 h after injection. Clinically, animals showed lethargy and had ruffled hair beginning at 40 min post injection. In the gross findings, liver was enlarged and its color was changed into dark red beginning at 40 min post injection. Microscopically, dissociation of centrilobular hepatocytes and hemorrhage was observed in the hepatic central legions and such pathological changes were then extended to the portal regions of liver by time course manner. Interestingly at 80 min after MC-LR injection, the entrapped eosinophilic materials that may be necrotic fragments of dissociated hepatocytes were found in the capillaries of lung and renal glomerulus. Ultrastructurally, microvilli of the hepatocytes were disrupted or lost at all time points. Furthermore, the Disse space and gap junctions were widened beginning at 40 min post injection. These results suggest that liver is the major target organ of MC-LR and isolated hepatocytes by the effects of such hepatotoxin may secondarily reduce the physiological function of lung and kidney.

Overexpression of NtROS2a gene encoding cytosine DNA demethylation enhances drought tolerance in transgenic rice (시토신 탈메틸화 관련 NtROS2a 유전자 도입 형질전환벼의 건조스트레스 내성 증진)

  • DNA methylation regulations gene expression, thus having pivotal roles in a myriad of physiological and pathological processes. In this study, the morphology and stress tolerance of transgenic rice overexpressing NtROS2a were determined. Transgenic plants exhibited less and shorter lateral shoots. Under various treatments, rice overexpressing NtROS2a showed alleviation of damage symptoms with higher survival rate. After drought and re-watering treatment, transgenic rice seedlings restored their normal growth. However, wild type plants could not be rescued. These findings indicate that overexpression of NtROS2a gene in rice seedlings can increase their tolerance to drought stresses.

Studies on Bovine Fascioliasis with Special Reference to Infestation Rate and Side Action of DS-6 in Cattle (간질감염(肝蛭感染) 및 구충제(驅蟲劑) DS-6 부작용(副作用)에 관(關)한 조사연구(調査硏究))

  • A servey on bovine fascioliasis in 52,876 cattle of Euiseong, Andong, Yecheon, Wolseong areas in Gyeongbug Province was carried out by the intradermal test, and the clinical side action of the positive cattle administered with DS-6 intramuscularly was observed. In addition pathological examination of 2 cattle died with side action of DS-6 was also conducted. The results of the studies are summarized as follows; 1. The average infestation rate of bovine fascioliasis was 31.1% and regional infestation rates were 35.1% in Eiseong, 34.5% in Yecheon, 32.2% in Andong, 26.9% in Wolseong, respectively. 2. The side actions were occurred in 1.5%(115/7,667) cf cattle administered with DS-6 and the clinical observations were salivation, dyspnea, hyperamia of conjunctiva, lacrimation, perspiration, urticaria, tremor, diarrhea, staggering, convulsion, edema and abortion. 3. Within 1 hour after the injection, side actions were occurred in 61.7% of the 115 cattle while they were observed in 37.4% of the 115 catte from 1 hour to 2 hours post injection. 4. The duration of the side action was less than 2 hours in 29.5%, 2 to 10 hours in 47.0% and more than 10 hours in 23.5% of the 115 cattle. 5. Autopsy findings and histopathological observations indicate that the death of cattle is caused by anaphylactic shock.

Efficacy of atropic rhinitis vaccine in pigs (돼지 위축성 비염백신의 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Atropic rhinitis (AR) is one of major respiratory diseases in pigs. AR causes a great economic losses and is considered to be a multifactorial disease in which herd management, heredity, and environment. Several vaccines against have been developed commercially and used in pig farms but the efficacy of each vaccine is still questionable. In this study, one of commercial AR vaccines, which contains inactivated Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida type D and their toxoid was evaluated for vaccine efficacy by challenge test. Twenty piglets were divided into four groups as follows; group I was piglets from vaccinated sows (twice before parturition); group II was piglets from vaccinated sows (same as group I) and were vaccinated at 1 day old; group III and IV were piglets without any vaccination. Groups I, II, and III were challenged by intranasal instillation of $5.3{\times}10^7$ CFU of B bronchiseptica twice and $1{\times}10^9$ CFU of P multocida five times. Group IV was control group without any vaccination and any challenge. We compared serological results, recovery rate of P multocida by polymerase chain reaction, clinical signs and pathological findings between vaccinated groups and unvaccinated groups for efficacy of the vaccine, Serological responses against B bronchiseptica and toxigenic P multocida type D were not showed evident discrepancy between vaccinated groups and unvaccinated groups assuming that the antibody responses against the vaccine is very delayed. However, growth rate, clinical signs and snout lesion grading in vaccinated groups showed more favorable than those in unvaccinated group. Therefore, AR vaccination in this study is considered to be effective in the prevention of AR in pigs.

  • Avian chlamydiosis is caused by Chlamydophila psittaci and considered as one of an important zoonotic disease throughout the world. Among more than 400 avian species including poultry and pet birds susceptible to the disease, psittacine birds were known to be mostly susceptible hosts. In Korea, no outbreak of the disease and genetic analysis of the agent in poultry and pet birds have been reported. With histopathological findings and genetic identification of a causative agent, avian chlamydiosis was identified in parrots submitted from the same pet bird farm in 2006 and 2009 for the diagnosis. Based on genetic sequences and phylogenetic analysis of ompA gene, the two isolates of Chlamydophila psittaci showed 100% of genetic similarity and belonged to genotype A, suggesting that the same agent might be continuously circulated in the farm. This result indicates that serological survey of the disease in pet bird farms and impact of the disease on significance in public health may be further studied.

Clinical and Pathological Study on the Lung Cancer of the Pusan Paik Hospital (부산 백병원의 폐암 임상 및 병리학적 검색)

  • From June 1979 to July 1988 for 9 years, total 440 cases of lung cancer[including biopsy and surgical specimen] of the Pusan Paik hospital were examined for the clinical and pathology study. The findings of the study are as follows; [1] The incidence of lung cancer started to increase from 1982, and it again remarkably increased since 1987. Such increase was solely brought by the increase of male lung cancer. Male and female ratio is 5.6: 1. [2] Histopathologically, the most prevalent type is squamous cell carcinoma[60.ado], and next are adenocarcinoma[15.6%] and small cell carcinoma[15.0%]. But in female alone, the most prevalent type is adenocarcinoma[40.3%], and next are squamous cell carcinoma[37.3%] and small cell carcinoma[11.9%]. [3] The absolute number of adenocarcinoma are approximately equally distributed among both sexes until 60 years of age. Above 61 years of age, mostly male was shown while female was not. Most probably, many female patient.- of that old age simply did not visit general hospitals for surgery in Korea. [4] Surgical treatment was performed in 8% of total cases of lung cancer. And most cases showed stage I progression of the cancer. Average size of the cancer was 5 cm in diameter in the operated 35 cases suggesting that the cancer could be detected more than 10 years ago before the time of surgery. [5] Lung cancer affected more in the right lung [right: left=1.6: 1], and each upper lobe of both lungs are affected about 1/4 of cases indicating that about 1/2 of all lung cancer develop from the upper lobes. [6] There are more nonsmokers[67.6%] among the lung cancer patients[male 64.6%, female 82.1%]. Probably, this will mean that there are other potent carcinogenic agents in our environment like automobile exhaust beside tobacco smoke. For the past history of lung disease other than cancer, tuberculosis is the most prevalent disease[16.1%, male 17.4%, female 9.0%]. Most of them is probably not related etiologically though this possibility is not completely denied.

Correlation Between Expression of ER, PR and C-erbB-2 Protein as Histologic Grade of Breast Cancer (유방암의 조직학적 악성도에 따른 에스트로겐 수용체(ER)와 프로게스테론 수용체(PR), 그리고 C-erbB-2 종양단백질 발현과의 상관관계)

  • Overexpressions of the estrogen receptors(ER), progesterone receptors(PR) and C-erbB-2 protein are important determiners of the response to chemotherapy in the breast cancer. For detecting ER, PR and C-erbB-2, immunohistochemistry are currently regarded as standard method. The purposes of this study compared to histologic grade and expression of the ER, PR and C-erbB-2 in breast cancer. We examined overexpression of ER, PR and C-erbB-2 protein in 84 breast carcinomas by using immunohistochemical stains. The following results were obtained. For histologic grade, 10 cases(11.9%) showed carcinoma in situ, 16 cases(19%) showed grade I, 36 cases (42.9%) showed grade II, and 22 cases(26.2%) showed grade III among the 84 test samples. The average positive rate ER and PR was 63%, 46% showed carcinoma in situ, 80%, 60% showed grade I, 64%, 41% showed grade II, 34%, 23% showed grade III, respectively. The induction of PR increased when induction of ER increased, thus showing significant relationship(p<0.05). The expression of C-erbB-2 protein was 9 cases(10.7%) in one positive(1+), 9 cases(10.7%) in two positive(2+), and 9 cases(10.7%) in three positive(3+). C-erbB-2 protein expression showed no statistical significance. In conclusion, ER and PR positive rates were inversely associated with histologic grades significantly(p<0.05). C-erbB-2 showed no significant difference with histologic grade. However ER, PR and C-erbB-2 showed significant relationship with each other(p<0.05). Therefore, these findings might be an important prognostic factor and might be arranged as a regular pathological examination in cases of breast cancer.

  • Acute toxicity of WK-38, a herbal preparation for the atherosclerosis, was examined using male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. WK-38 is composed of Rhei Rhizoma, Magonoliae Cortx, Moutan Cortex Radicis. Rats were treated with the WK-38 intragastrically at 0 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg or 2,000 mg/kg and observed for two weeks. No mortality was observed at the doses used. Abnormal clinical signs such as eye bleeding, nasal bleeding and hyperemia had been shown temporary after administration. All rats were appeared to be healthy and normal during the 2 week observation. Also there was no difference in net body weight gain, gross pathological findings, and urine analysis among the groups rats treated with different doses of the WK-38.
