This study describes pathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological findings in adult dogs and fetuses naturally infected with Brucella (B.) canis. A total of 42 dogs including 40 dogs and 2 aborted fetuses were examined. The most common gross lesions in infected dogs were swelling of lymph nodes and spleen. The testes showed marked swelling with multifocal to diffuse reddish discoloration. The most significant histopathological lesions were observed in the placenta. Placental trophoblasts were markedly hypertrophied due to the accumulation of intra-cellular gram-negative bacteria. Lymphocytic inflammation of varying severity was observed in the reproductive organs such as male testis, epididymis, and prostate gland and female uterus. Strong immunolabelling was observed in the cytoplasm of most trophoblasts in the placental tissues using immunohistochemistry. However, immunohistochemical staining did not demonstrate any organisms in other organs of dogs and fetuses. B. canis isolates were most frequently obtained from the whole blood (82.5%) and superficial inguinal lymph node (77.5%) in both sexes. In addition, the isolation rate was higher in male genital organs than in those of females. Hence, management of male dogs is most important because infected dogs can play a role as carriers.

Socheongryong-tang has been used for the treatment of inflammatory allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma in Asian countries. This study was conducted to investigate the safety of Socheongryong-tang in rats. The safety of this tang on acute toxicity was evaluated by single dose toxicity study. Rats were orally administrated in a single dose of 0 and 2000 mg/kg (limited dose) Socheongryong-tang. There were 7 rats in each groups. All animals were sacrificed after 14 days of treatment. After single administration, mortality, clinlcal signs, body weight changes and gross pathological findings were observed for 14 days. Three parameters were tested: organ weight measurement, clinical chemistry, and hematology. In this study with rats, Socheongryong-tang treatment did not show any acute toxicity. No mortality was noted for 14 days of treatment. There were no adverse effects on clinical signs, body weight, organ eight and gross pathological findings at all treatment groups. The clinical chemistry parameters attesting to liver and kidney functions as well as the hematological parameters were within the normal ranges. From single dose toxicity study with rats, it is considered that $LD_{50}$ of Socheongryong-tang is over 2000 mg/kg in oral administration. This finding of the safety on single dose toxicity study of Socheongryong-tang are expected to strengthen the position of Socheongryong-tang as nontoxic medicine.
Since the wide spread application of hyperbaric oxygenation in clinical setting, the problems of oxygen toxicity have been attracting a deep interest from the researchers on hyperbaric medicine as a practical issue. Among extensive research trials, the study on the protective agents against oxygen toxicity occupied one of the most challenging field. As the mechanisms of oxygen toxicity, the role of the oxygen free radicals produced by peroxidation process are strongly accepted by the leading researchers on oxygen toxicity, the probable protective effects of antioxidant against oxygen toxicity are sustaining a sufficient rationale. In this study, the author attempted to evaluate the effect of vitamin E as a protective agent against oxygen toxicity through the observation of death rate, convulsion rate, time to convulsion, and macroscopic and microscopic pathological changes of experimental rats exposed to 100% oxygen at 5 ATA for 120 minutes. The findings observed are as follows: 1) The death rate, convulsion rate, time to convulsion, organ/body weight ratio and microscopic pathological findings were identified as reliable objective and quantitative indices for oxygen toxicity. 2) Vitamin E showed excellent protective effects against CNS and pulmonary oxygen toxicity as a strong antioxidant. The most effective dose seemed to be around 400 mg/kg 3) The results of this study are supporting the oxygen free radical hypothesis on oxygen toxicity.
Sebaceous carcinoma is extremely rare in the parotid gland. Recently, we experienced a case of carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation arising from the parotid gland in patient who was diagnosed as parotid adenoma carcinoma and underwent total parotidectomy. A 73-year-old male visited our department for the evaluation of 3-month history of infra-auricular mass combined with pain. Radiologic finding showed lobulated enhancing and solid mass with calcification in the right parotid gland. Initially, total parotidectomy with supraomohyoid neck dissection was performed. Pathological findings showed capsulated whitish mass with hemorrhage and cystic degeneration. Immunohistochemically, CK7, CK5/6, p63 were positive and CEA was negative. The intra-operative frozen section diagnosis was mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The permanent diagnosis was changed to adenocarcinoma, NOS(not otherwise specified). Fourteen months later, the newly developed mass was noticed on the operation bed. The mass was clinically diagnosed as recurred adenocarcinoma. Revision parotidectomy was performed and pathological findings revealed that the tumor was newly developed sebaceous carcinoma. We report a case of carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation in parotid gland with a review of literature.

Background and Objectives: Although the clinical consequences of advanced heart failure (HF) may be similar across different etiologies of cardiomyopathies, their proteomic expression may show substantial differences in relation to underlying pathophysiology. We aimed to identify myocardial tissue-based proteomic characteristics and the underlying molecular pathophysiology in non-ischemic cardiomyopathy with different etiologies. Methods: Comparative extensive proteomic analysis of the myocardium was performed in nine patients with biopsy-proven non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (3 dilated cardiomyopathy [DCM], 2 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [HCM], and 4 myocarditis) as well as five controls using tandem mass tags combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Differential protein expression analysis, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis, and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) were performed to identify proteomic differences and molecular mechanisms in each cardiomyopathy type compared to the control. Proteomic characteristics were further evaluated in accordance with clinical and pathological findings. Results: The principal component analysis score plot showed that the controls, DCM, and HCM clustered well. However, myocarditis samples exhibited scattered distribution. IPA revealed the downregulation of oxidative phosphorylation and upregulation of the sirtuin signaling pathway in both DCM and HCM. Various inflammatory pathways were upregulated in myocarditis with the downregulation of Rho GDP dissociation inhibitors. The molecular pathophysiology identified by extensive proteomic analysis represented the clinical and pathological properties of each cardiomyopathy with abundant proteomes. Conclusions: Different etiologies of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies in advanced HF exhibit distinct proteomic expression despite shared pathologic findings. The benefit of tailored management strategies considering the different proteomic expressions in non-ischemic advanced HF requires further investigation.
The cellular change of the pulmonary tuberculous lesions may be divided into two groups, exudative and proliferative form by their course and fate. In the most cases, the patients usually have very much complex type of cellular changes. Therefore, the shadows of the chest films in pulmonary tuberculosis are also much variable in nature. And Daniel said that knowledge of the pathology of tuberculosis and an appreciation of the method of progression and healing are essential to proper interpretation of the films. Author, having reviewed 33 cases of resected tuberculous lung obtained in N.M.T.H. for one year from Oct. '75 to Sep. '76 by surgical managements, classified the Pathological findings such as: 1) caseation only, 2) tuberculoma, 3) atelectatic lung 4) cavitary lesion and 5) atelectasis with cavity, and examined the relationship between the roentgenological characteristics of the chest films and the pathological process of tuberculous lesions of the resected lungs, The result were obtained as follows. (1) Tuberculoma was commonly appeared in $S_2$ segment in right and $S_6$ segment in left. (2) Atelectasis and destroyed lung were more commonly appeared in left lung than right, and their containing rate of cavity was 82%. (3) Cavities were mostly appeared in $S_1$ and $S_2$ segments of both lung and the appearance-rate of cavity on $S_6$ segment was higher in left than right. And among the cavitary lesions of the resected lung, cavity was not seen in the preoperative chest films in 22%. (4) The configuration, thickness and sharpness of the walls of cavities, which revealed the cavitary shadows in the preoperative chest films, were mostly depended on the degree of increased collagenous fiber of the wall, existence of perifocalitis, and more or less of the caseous masses on the inner surface of the cavity wall.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine structural abnormalities of brain in patients with pathological gambling(PG) using voxel-based morphometry. Methods : We compared gray matter(GM) volumes between 10 patients with PG and 14 age- and IQ-matched healthy controls and examined the relationship of GM volumes with clinical variables in patients with PG. Results : We found significant increase of GM volume in the superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyri, the midbrain, the middle temporal gyrus, the precuneus, and the fusiform gyrus of patients with PG. A significant decrease of GM volume was observed in the parahippocampal gyrus and the lingual gyrus of the patient group. In addition, GM volumes in some of these regions were positively associated with South Oaks Gambling Screen score and negatively with age of onset in patients with PG. Conclusion : Current findings indicate that structural abnormalities in the fronto-temporal cortex, the midbrain, and the precuneus might be involved in the pathophysiology of PG, and contribute to some of the behavioral changes observed in patients with PG.
A population-based relationship between low vitamin D status and increased cancer risk is now generally accepted. However there were only few studies reported on prognostic impact. To determine the effect of low vitamin D on progression of breast cancer, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of vitamin D levels and clinico-pathological characteristics in 200 cases of breast cancer diagnosed during 2011-2012 at the National Cancer Institute of Thailand. Vitamin D levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Clinical and pathological data were accessed to examine prognostic effects of vitamin D. We found that the mean vitamin D level was $23.0{\pm}6.61ng/ml$. High vitamin D levels (${\geq}32ng/ml$) were detected in 7% of patients, low levels (<32 ng/ml) in 93% Mean vitamin D levels for stages 1-4 were $26.1{\pm}6.35$, $22.3{\pm}6.34$, $22.2{\pm}6.46$ and $21.3{\pm}5.42ng/ml$ respectively (P=0.016) and 24.1 and 21.3 ng/ml for lymph node negative and positive cases (P=0.006). Low vitamin D level (<32 ng/ml) was significantly found in majority of cases with advanced stage of the disease (P=0.036), positive node involvement (P=0.030) and large tumors (P=0.038). Our findings suggest that low and decreased level of vitamin D might correlate with progression and metastasis of breast cancer.
Pathological interrelations of two soil-borne diseases in cucurbits (watermelon, oriental melon, shintosa and cucumber) caused by Fusarium isolates (FI) and the root-knot nematode (RKN), Meloidogyne incognita were characterized by the fusarium disease severity index (DI), RKN gall index (GI) and eggmass index (EI) in inoculation tests using FI and RKN. Virulence of FI as determined by DI at 4 weeks after inoculation was mostly in the higher order of Fusarium proliferatum F6, F5 and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis or Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum with no significant differential interactions among the cucurbits and RKN co-infection. Significant increases of DI due to RKN coinfection were noticed in watermelon and oriental melon infected with F. proliferatum isolates, suggesting the DI increase due to RKN coinfection may depend upon the virulence of FI relative to aggressiveness of RKN on the cucurbits. For the coinfection of FI and RKN, GI and EI were mostly reduced logarithmically with the increase of DI, largely more in EI than GI, in all cucurbits except for shintosa. Microscopic examination of the root tissues showed histopathological features characteristic to infection types; formation of fungal hyphae and/or spores and plant defense structures (tyloses and mucilage) in variable degrees and formation of giant cells at variable developmental stages and with variable cytoplasmic depletion or degeneration which were visualized in relations with the values of DI, GI and EI. These findings will be helpful to develop control strategies of the soil-borne disease complex based on their pathological characteristics.
Objectives : The Gyotae-hwan formula has traditionally been applied to conditions of fearful throbbing[怔忡] and insomnia due to disharmony of the Heart and Kidney, of which experimental and clinical research has been carried out while those on its pathological mechanism and constituent compatibility have been inadequate. Methods : Pathological mechanism and constituent compatibility of the Gyotae-hwan formula as listed in the 『Comprehensive Medicine According to Master Han』(韓氏醫通) and the『Simple Recipes for Four Disciplines』(四科簡效方) were analyzed. Findings from recent researches searched using the keywords '交泰丸' and '교태환' in the OASIS and CNKI databases were referenced as well. Results : The Gyo-tae hwan was first mentioned in the text 『Comprehensive Medicine According to Master Han』by Mao Han in terms of constituent medicinals and application while measurements and name of formula were not listed while the concept of harmony between the Heart and Kidney was mentioned. In the『Simple Recipes for Four Discipline s』 written by Shixiong Wang, measurements of constituent medicinals, usages and name of formula were finally mentioned, along with its efficacy to treat fearful throbbing and insomnia due to disharmony between the Heart and the Kidney. Conclusions : In conclusion, the Gyo-tae hwan uses Coptidis Rhizoma as chief herb and Cinnamomi Cortex as assistant herb to change the state of disharmony between the Heart and Kidney to a harmonious state, treating insomnia and fearful throbbing.
