  • The importance of Gotjawal located in the mid-mountain area of Jeju Island has been emphasized in various aspects. This study aims to identify the value of Gotjawal as a life-cultural space. This will be illustrated by tracing the locals' previous pasturing activities and the management of village common pastures. Cheongsu Village Common Pasture and Jeoji Village Common Pasture in Cheongsu-Jeoji Gotjawal area, which are the study areas, have been actively used by local farmhouses since the establishment of the pastures in 1930's. In particular cattle were significant means for agriculture and transportation methods in 1960's and 1970's. The farmhouses were needed to breed cattle as one of the main economic means. Pasturing cattle on the village common pastures has developed a unique ranching culture. Furthermore, cooperative work of these farmhouses were performed. These include the establishment of ponds for water supply and the preparation of hay. Ranching facilities for pasturing were built on village common pastures and still remain in Gotjawal area. This has been used in the understanding of the locals' lives in the mid-mountain area of Jeju Island.

  • The Catba national park (20$\circ$42'-20$\circ$54'N, 106$\circ$54'-107$\circ$09'E), which is a representative protected area in northeast Vietnam, was first investigated in terms of phytosociology of the Zurich-Montpellier School. 15 plant communities were identified from the seven vegetation types: Teetaria-Amoora gigantea community, Blechmum-Pitecellobium ferrugineum community, Impatiens-Dracaena cambodiana community, Rhizophora apiculata community, Avicenia marina community, Panicum repens community, Heterosmilax-Zanthoxylum nitidum community, Stachytarphyta jamaiensis-Bidens bipinnata community, microstegium vagans community, Dicranopteris linearis community, Randina-Sapium sebiferum community, Psidium gujava community, Elephantopus scaber community, and chirita aratformis community. Traditional pasturing and shifting agrie\culture by indigenous people in Catba national park were recognized as main disturbance regies, which have been far above sustainable levels. Ecological strategies for conservation and sustainable use on national park' ecosystem were proposed: (1) development of awareness program on sustainable life style of indigenous people, (2) establishment of multiple use module system of national park, (3) ecosystem monitoring of permanent ecological sites.

  • Pasture in woodland have been extensively established to meet the demand of forage for livestock. The survey type of study was conducted to investigate and analyze for the establishment of pasture in woodland from foresters' standpoint. The findings can be provided for basic data to achieve appropriate wooldland use pattern. The study area was confined to Pyungchang county, Hoengsung county, and Hongcheoa county, which are primary pasturing region in Kangweon province. The analysis was based on the field survey of 30 pastures (grouped to 'successful', 'failed', and 'grazing-in-the-wood' site) and returned 133 questionnaires from 398 debriefed pasture owners.

  • The objective of this study was to clarify the most effective component of grazing for improving welfare of fattening pigs. This study compared welfare indicators of 20 fattening pigs aged 100 to 124 days (the prior period) and 138 to 164 days (the latter period) in an indoor housing system (IS), an outdoor pasturing system (OP), a concrete floor paddock system (CF), a concrete floor paddock system with fresh grass (FG), or a soil floor paddock system (SF). The last three treatments include important components of a grazing system: extra space, grass feed, and soil floor. Behavior, wounds on the body, and performances, measured as average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio, were observed. CF pigs behaved similarly to IS pigs. FG pigs showed higher levels of foraging, chewing and activity. SF pigs engaged in higher levels of foraging, exploring, activity, and rooting, and showed a similar amount of playing behavior as OP pigs. ADG was the same in all treatments at the prior period, and increased in the order FG, IS, CF, SF, and OP at the latter. The behaviors and performance of SF pigs resembled those of OP which seemed to indicate a consistently higher standard of welfare than the other treatments. In conclusion, the existence of a soil floor is the most important component of a pasture for improving the welfare of pigs.

  • In the Sumeunmulbaengdui Wetland Protected Area of Jeju Island, there exists a unique pond, a so-called 'Ohmi', which is likely to be an oasis supporting the wildlife and escaped-livestock. We exquisitely described the diversity and distribution of plant community of the Ohmi. Despite its small area, six syntaxa were identified: Sphagnum community of peat bog type, Nymphoides coreana community of the floating-leaf limnetic vegetation, Scirpus triangulatus community and Schoenoplectus hotarui community of the littoral zone vegetation, and Deinostema violacea-Eleocharis congesta community and Eriocaulon atrum-miquelianum community of the ephemeral vegetation. A zonal distribution of plant communities along the water depth was recognized. The Sphagnum islets regarded as a typical component of peat bog, in Korea were first described at the center of the Ohmi. We conclude that the Ohmi is a primeval keystone habitat of the Sumeunmulbaengdui intermediate moor with a less oligotrophic ombrotrophic environment.

  • Based on a long-term ethnographic study, this paper examines how the propositions and practices for desertification management in Inner Mongolia, China have changed over time. Desertification as an ecological issue cannot simply be treated as a something "natural" or "social," while it is an outcome of the construction made by both human and non-human agents. My research has found that the propositions for desertification management have been involved in the process of defining desertification, particularly by selecting different actors related to the ecological process in this region. Ultimately, the crisis in the inner Mongolia has always been constructed by the ways in which the selected actors and their relationships are differently defined. My study also reveals that although the proposed preventive measures, including afforestation, area protection, and pasturing prohibition, have tried to reconcile the conflicts of interest among the different actors, they have always been faced with certain limitations and failed in dryland management. In this historical context of crisis construction, by introducing a new non-human agent, "the chicken," the project of grassland chicken farming has eventually appeared to be an innovative strategy that can overcome the earlier limitations and coordinate the interests of Mongolian pastoralists who have suffered from economic difficulty.
