  • An acid tolerant R. meliloti "YA03" which was characterized through both acidified tube and pot soil experiment, was examined on its inoculation effect to alfalfa[Medicago sativa (L.)]cv. Vernal on hilly acid soil. It was conducted for 2 years to evaluate inoculation residual effect and there were two-fertilizer factors of nitrogen(0.8kg/10a) and lime(0,162kg/10a)as urea and $Ca(OH)_2$, respectively. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. In the 1st-year experiment, YA03 inoculated without nitrogen and lime application showed higher symbiotic effectiveness than check strains, YA026 and Rm2011 in nodule mass, $N_2$-fixing activity, and dry matter yield, but with N 8kg/10a application lower effectiveness than Rm2011. 2. In the 2nd-year experiment, Alfalfa dry matter yield by YA03 inoculation with N application(without lime) was 74% higher than that(276 kg/10a) in the 1st year, and the value showed 166%, 20%, and 21% increments as compared with noninoculated control(180kg/10a). YA026(399kg/10a), and Rm2011(397kg/10a), respectively. 3. In the 2nd-year experiment of N applicated plote(without lime), especially, YA03 showed higher shoot nitrogen(7.7kg N/10a/Yr.) fixed and soil rhizobial population($1{\times}10^4\;cells/g.\;soil$) than check strains. 4. On the basis of lime application, application effect of three major fertilizers with YA03 inoculation on alfalfa yield and soil rhizobial population was in the order of $N+P_2O_5+K_2O>P_2O_5+K_2O>P_2O_5+K_2O$. 5. On the whole, alfalfa yield by acid tolerant R. meliloti YA03 inoculation on hilly acid soil was enhanced with nitrogen application, and besides it appeared 44% higher with lime than without lime.

  • A pot experiment with $P^{32}$ was carried out to investigate the soil phosphorus availability to four leguminous forage crops and three graminaceous, of black volcanic ash soil and red one. Soil phosphorus was extracted with 6 different extractants and also fractionated in Fe, Al and Ca phosphorus. The results were: 1) Soil phosphorus availability was in decreasing order of Italian rye grass${\gg}$ soybean> cassia> corn> weeping love grass${\gg}$ Korean lespedeza> Red clover and they might be grouped into three levels by A-value, over 1000, 200-500 and below 40 $p_{2}O_{5}\;kg/ha$. 2) The amount of various available phosphorus and phosoborus fraction in the black soil was higher than that in the red soil. No difference in phosphorus availabiliy to forage crops was shown between two soils. Therefore an extractant able to draw out similar amount of phosphorus from two soil will be suitable for determining the phosphorus availability index. 3) Two extractants, one extracting 20 ppm as maximum and the other extracting 100 ppm as minimum will be recommendable for determining the availability of phosphorus; the former for red clover and Lespedeza and the latter for others. Truog method may be good for the former but no appropriate method for the latter was found in the methods used. 4) T/R ratios of legumes were negatively correlated at 5% level with % phosphorus from fertilizer (% pdF). Legumes showed below 50 of % pdF over 5 of T/R ratio and over 80 of % pdF below 5 of T/R.

  • A field experiment was conduted to determine the effects of shading degrees (O: full sunlight, 25, 50 and 75%) on the proximate components, cell wall constituents (CWC), digestibility, water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N) concentration of grasses grown in forest. For the test different artificial shading houses were established and pasutre species used were orchardgrass, timothy, perennial ryegrass and ladino clover. the experiment was performed at LES in Suwon, 1985 1. Considering proximate components, CWC and digestibility of grasses, ladino clover showed the best quality, and then perennial ryegrass. 2. The contents of crude protein, crude ash, and digestibility of grasses were increased with shadking, regardless of pasture species. As the shading degrees are increased, the contents of crude fibe in orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and timothy were decreased, while that in ladino clover was increased with shading. 3. Grasses grwon in spring showed higher digestibility than those grwon in summer season. 4. The content of WSC was the highest in perennial ryegrass, and then ladino clover, orchardgrass, and timothy, in that order. Also WSC was decreased as the shading degrees are in creased. 5. The content of $NO_3$-N was the highest in perennial ryegrass, and then orchardgrass, ladino clover and timothy, in that order. Also the $NO_3$-N was significantly increased with higher shading level. In the regression equation between shading degrees and $NO_3$-N ($r^2=0.90^{**},\;r^2=0.95^{**}$), shading degree of 43 to 44% was critical level, causing nitrate poisoning to animal. 6. Considering grass quality, dry matter yield and $NO_3$-N, less than 40% of shading degree (over 60% of full sunlight) was desirable for better grassland improvement, management and utilization in the forest.

  • With a purpose of finding out the effects of magnesium and boron enriched organic-compound fertilizer application on the dry matter yield, yield components and changes in the botanical composition on the hilly pasture, a field experiment was arranged with five different treatments as a randomized block desigh and lasted from September, 1984 to the end of growing season in 1986. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. As a early plant growth and development, winter hardiness, growth vigour and coverate of grasses at the plots with organic-compound fertilizer application were better comparing to single dressing. 2. Average dry matter yields for two years were shown significantly high due to increasing amount of fertilizer. This trend was same both single and organic-compound fertilizer. And dry matter yields with organic-compound fertilizer application of low (8,693.1 kg/ha) and conventional level (12,758.7 kg/ha) were appeared to increase by 10 and 15% than those of single dressing of Low (7,930.6 kg/ha) and conventional level (11,122.6 kg/ha), respectively. But it was not significant difference. 3. Dry matter yield of grasses was significantly gained by increasing amount of fertilizer. The yield of legumes at the plots with organic-compound fertilizer application the yields of grasses were a litle more increased by 8-14%, and legumes were much more gained by 26-29% than those of the same species groups with single dressing, but it was not significant between the differnet kinds of fertilizer in the same fertilizing level. 4. At the grassland management, the rate of legumes tended to dominate at the plot without fertilization gradually. On the other hand, the botanical compositions and the rates of grasses were much better maintained at the plots with fertilization. But the rates of legumes with organic-compound fertilizer application tended to increase a little more than those of single dressing gradually. 5. All of the soil chemical properties after the experiment were much more improved comparing to before the experiment. But the average contents of soil organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ were slightly higher at the plot with organic-compound fertilization, on the other hand, pH and exchangeable cations tended to a little less than those of single dressing.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of some kinds of tree litters covered the soil surface on the germination, establishment, sward composition, and herbage production of the grasses sown by the oversowing method. The litters were leaves of Pinus rigida Miller, Quercus variabilis Blume, Larix leptolepis Gord, and Alnus hirsuta Rupr. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In the Petri dish, germination was affected by grass species and kinds of litters, especially the percolate from Pinus litter seriously suppressed the early germination of small size seeds such as ladino clover and timothy. 2. In the pot, establishment was slightly suppressed in ladino and timothy by the percolate from Pinus litter, while in others it was decreased relatively. 3. Among the 6 species investigated, the small size seeds of ladino clover and timothy and the large size seeds of red clover, they could be early put into the litter spaces and established well. 4. In Larix litter, the establishment percentage of all species were decreased seriously owing to low moisture retention capacity. 5. Grass height and root length were different in kinds of litters and species. 6. The percentages of establishment on each surface treatments of burning, treading, raking, and the control under Quercus tree were 36, 46, 37, and 31%, respectively. 7. The sward percentage of oversown grasses and legumes was 57.8% in burning, 70.9% in treading, 59.6% in raking, and 54.0% in the control. 8. Treading treatment was most effective to destroy existing vegetation and improve soil-seed contact when oversowing and showed the best result. 9. Yield of dry matter per unit area in treading treatment was higher (p<0.05) than those of the other treatments. The above experimental results suggest the importance of direct oversowing on the litters in the mountainous land and forest land.

  • To clarify the direct effect of potassium and interactions with nitrogen and phosphorus on the yield of pasture plants, fertilizer experiment with varied levels of potassium and nitrogen treatment to grass single seeding, legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding, was conducted for three years from 1977 to 1980. The summary of obtained experimental result may be described as below: 1. Potassium application, at any level of amount, did not show its effect to the establishment of plant population, however potash application responded to help winter hardiness at grass single seeding plot. 2. Potassium effect on the fresh yield at grass single seeding was distinct however, not clear effect was observed at legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding plots. 3. For drymatter yield, the highest yield at legume single seeding was recorded 1.152 Kilograms per 10a are at treatment #4 and the highest yields of grass-legume mixed seeding and grass were recorded 1,093 kilograms (Treatment #3) and 834 kilograms (Treatment #5) respectively. 4. In observation of plant succession, they were found that orchardgrass and tall fescue have increased at grass single seeding plot and Alfalfa was dominant over 90 per cent of plant population at legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding plots. It seems that potash effect was distinct in increasing orchardgrass population. 5. The results of this experiment shown that the maximum yield from grass single seeding was obtained at the plat where applied 20-20-30 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and the maximum yield from legume single seeding was obtained at the plot applied with 8-20-20 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$. 6. Fertilizer cost for producing one kilogram of dry matter in this experiment was lowest at treatment #1 of grass-legume mixed seeding and highest at treatment #5 of grass single seeding. The largest gross income was obtained from the plots where phosphate application was omitted. 7. From the results of this experiment, it may be recommended that economically optimum fertilizer application for grass single seeding will be 20-20-20- kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and for legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding will be 8-20-20 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of the dolomite particle and the shell powder on soil characteristics, dry matter yield and nutritive value of forages in loam soil at the experimental field of National Livestock Research Institute, Suwon, from 1994 to 1996. Application treatments were control, lime, dolomite 0.5, 2.0, 4.0mm, and shell powder in mixed pasture. Rate of dust occurrence was greatly decreased according to dolomite application and the dissolving rate in soil was highest in shell powder application among treatments. Although there was no significant difference, average dry matter yield of forages for 3 years was slightly increased with the application of lime, shell powder, dolomite 0.5mm, 4.0mm, 2.0mm and control in order. Both Ca and Mg contents of forages were no differences among treatments in 1994. However, all treatments were higher than those of control in 1995. And K and Na contents of forages were no differences among treatments. Lime requirement was greatly increased from 2,630 to 6,150kg per ha with the lapse of time. Although soil hardness was optimum level at first, it was likely to become hard little by little after treatments. Solid phase of soil was lowered a little except for control. Organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ contents of soil were highest in shell powder application among treatments, and K, Ca and Mg contents of soil were no differences among treatments. Ca content was increased a little in 1995, but decreased a little in 1996 compared to that of soil before treatments in 1994. AIso, Mg content was lowered than that of soil before experiment in 1995 and 1996. The results demonstrated that use of dolomite and shell powder as lime substitutes could be reduced dust problem and coast pollution as well as soil improvement. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the dolomite and the shell powder every 3 years in loam soil.

  • From the ancient times our forefathers settled down in this peninsular and cultivated the hills and waste-lands into fields. Instead of fertilizing the lands they moved to find other fertile lands and lived a feudal life of agriculture and various machines played a main role in the land reclamation. The best method of land clearing, the time and efficiency in the operation and the effect of growing crops should sysematically analized prior to the time of 3rd Five-year Economic Development(1972-1976) in order to cultivated 210,000 ha of waste-land or the modernization of our country. The present study was investigated to find out a new working-system of mechanical land clearing and development of fertile soil. The results are as follows: 1) The land reclamation in natural slope is much more encourageable in land clearing and farming when the slope is below ten grades than bench terrace. 2) Weeds were mixed with soil in the land clearing work in order to supply organic materials and to make soil swollen instead of burning of just removing. 3) The equipments such as bulldozers, harrows, power tillers and so on should be prepared in order to do a systematic work in the land clearing. 4) The work of pulling-up roots is dependent upon the forms of roots spreading under the ground. The work of the pulling-up the straight roots was most difficult. 5) The land clearing work of the wrinkled style blocks was easy in pulling up roots and in the time of first plowing. The harrowing work could also be simply done. 6) The amount of soil carried was $240m^3/10a$, 15.6% increased amount from the standard block, while the required time of clearing work was 2 hours 15 minutes 45 seconds/10a, the one third of time required for the standard block. 7) The time disc harrowing work increased 50%, or 15 minutes/10a compared to the harrowing work required in the cultivated soil. 8) The time of rotary tilling increased 2.4 times or 1 hour 47 minutes 43 seconds/10a compared to the time required in the cultivated soil. 9) The reclamed land should be fertilized according to the soil quality, especially added fertilizer should be more than 1,200kg/10a, limes 20kg/10a. In order to produce added fertilizer grass fields should be needed. 10) The experiment of pasture growing is now progressing and therefore the effect of land clearing and the degree of developed soil will be investigated before long.

  • The present study evaluated the effect of controlled ryegrass-white clover herbage availability from day 128 until day 142 of pregnancy in comparison to unrestricted availability, on the performance of twin-bearing ewes of varying body condition score (BCS; 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0) and their lambs. It was hypothesised that under conditions of controlled herbage availability, the performance of lambs born to ewes with a greater BCS would be greater than those born to ewes with a lower BCS. During the period that the nutritional regimens were imposed, the pre- and post-grazing herbage masses of the Control regimen ($1,070{\pm}69$ and $801{\pm}30$ kg dry matter [DM]/ha) were lower than the ad libitum regimen ($1,784{\pm}69$ and $1,333{\pm}33kg\;DM/ha$; p<0.05). The average herbage masses during lactation were $1,410{\pm}31kg\;DM/ha$. Nutritional regimen had no effect on ewe live weight, BCS and back fat depth or on lamb live weight, indices of colostrum uptake, maximal heat production, total litter weight weaned or survival to weaning (p>0.05). The difference in ewe BCSs and back fats observed among body condition groups was maintained throughout pregnancy (p<0.05). At weaning, ewes from the BCS2.0 group had lower BCS and live weight ($2.4{\pm}0.2$, $74.3{\pm}2.6kg$) than both the BCS2.5 ($2.6{\pm}0.2$, $78.6{\pm}2.4kg$) and BCS3.0 ewes ($2.7{\pm}0.2$, $79.0{\pm}2.6kg$; p<0.05), which did not differ (p>0.05). Ewe BCS group had no effect on lamb live weight at birth or weaning or on maximal heat production (p>0.05). Serum gamma glutamyl transferase concentrations of lambs born to BCS3.0 ewes were higher within 36 hours of birth than lambs born to BCS2.0 ewes and BCS2.5 ewes ($51.8{\pm}1.9$ vs $46.5{\pm}1.9$ and $45.6{\pm}1.9IU/mL$, respectively [p<0.05]). There was, however, no effect of ewe body condition on lamb plasma glucose concentration (p>0.05). Lamb survival was the only lamb parameter that showed an interaction between ewe nutritional regimen and ewe BCS whereby survival of lambs born to BCS2.5 and BCS3.0 ewes differed but only within the Control nutritional regimen ewes (p<0.05). These results indicate farmers can provide twin-bearing ewes with pre- and post-grazing ryegrass-white clover herbage covers of approximately 1,100 and 800 kg DM/ha in late pregnancy, provided that herbage covers are 1400 in lactation, without affecting lamb performance to weaning. The present results also indicate that under these grazing conditions, there is little difference in ewe performance within the BCS range of 2.0 to 3.0 and therefore they do not need to be managed separately.

  • This experiment was to study the effects of application rates of mineral N and cattle slurry on the dry matter yield of Orchardgrass grown in different cutting frequency. Annual rates of mineral N of 0($N_0$), 90kg($N_1$), 180kg($N_2$) and 270kg/ha($N_3$) in 3 cuttings, and 0($N_0$), 120kg($N_1$), 240($N_2$) and 360kg/ha($N_3$) were applied as urea in 4 cuttings. Cattle slurry applied at rates of $30m^3(S_1)$, $60m^3(S_2)$ and $90m^3/ha(S_3)$, suppling 90kg, 180kg and 240kg N/ha in 3 cuttings, and at rates of $40m^3(S_1)$, $80m^3(S_2)$ and $120m^3/ha(S_3)$, suppling 120kg, 240kg and 360kg N/ha in 4 cuttings, respectively. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Mineral N and cattle slurry application rates(N), and cuts(C) were significant differences at the 0.1% level(p<0.001), and 5% level(p<0.05) for the interaction of $N{\times}C$ in both cuttings. 2. The annual dry matter yields obtained were 8.8ton-10.1ton/ha at rates of $N_1-N_3$, and 7.1ton-9.5ton/ha at rates of $S_1-S_3$ in 3 cuttings. The annual dry matter yields obtained were 10.9ton-13.9ton/ha at rates of $N_1-N_3$, and 6.9ton-11.2ton/ha at rates of $S_1-S_3$ in 4 cuttings, respectively. 3. Relative efficiency of cattle slurry N for the dry matter production of Orchardgrass pasture as compared to mineral N were 91.4%(ranged from 72.2% to 109.7%) in 3 cuttings, and 75.1%(ranged from 48.3% to 107.9%) in 4 cuttings, respectively. 4. The annual cattle slurry application rates required to maintain highest dry matter yields were estimated to be 90m3/ha(270kg N/ha) and 80m3/ha(240kg N/kg) in 3 and 4cuttings.
