Suspension bridges have the extended in plan configuration which makes them prone to dynamic events like earthquake. The longer span lead to more flexibility and slender of them. So, control systems seem to be essential in order to protect them against ground motion excitation. Tuned mass damper or in brief TMD is a passive control system that its efficiency is practically proven. Moreover, its parameters i.e. mass ratio, tuning frequency and damping ratio can be optimized in a manner providing the best performance. Meta-heuristic optimization algorithm is a powerful tool to gain this aim. In this study, TMD parameters are optimized in different-length suspension bridges in three distinct cases including 3, 4 and 5 TMDs by observer-teacher-learner based algorithm under a complete set of ground motions formed from both near-field and far-field instances. The Vincent Thomas, Tacoma Narrows and Golden Gate suspension bridges are selected for case studies as short, mean and long span ones, respectively. The results indicate that All cases of used TMDs result in response reduction and case 4TMD can be more suitable for bridges in near and far-field conditions.
Lots of semi-active control devices have been developed in recent years because they have the best features of passive and active system. Especially, controllable magneto-rheological(MR) fluid devices have received significant attention in these area of research. The MR fluid is the material that reversibly changes from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semisolid with a controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. If the magnetic field is induced by moving a permanent magnet instead of applying current to a solenoid, it is possible to design a MR damper consuming low power because the power consumption is reduced at steady state. This paper proposes valve mode MR damper using permanent magnetic circuit that has wide range of operation with low power consumption and small size. To design a MR damper that has a large maximum dissipating torque and a low damping coefficient, a design parameter is adopted. The magnetic circuit, material of choke and choke type are selected experimentally with the design parameter. The behaviors of the damper are examined and torque tracking control using PID feedback controller is performed for step, ramp and sinusoidal trajectories.
This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.
The purpose of this study was to quantify the clinical assessment of rigidity at wrist in patients with Parkinson's disease. The experimental system was designed that the effect of gravity was negated by restricting motion at the horizontal plane and inertia was predetermined from a biomechanical measurement. Forty five patients with Parkinson's disease participated in this study. Viscoelastic properties were calculated from the experimental data acquired during intermittent passive movement of wrist. Viscoelastic constants correlated well with the rigidity scores of UPDRS, i.e., Spearman's r=0.733 and 0.905 for spring and damping constants, respectively. The results suggest that viscoelastic properties can be used as quantitative measures of rigidity.

This paper presents the design and the control performance of a novel dynamic compliant-arm support with parallel elastic actuators that was developed to assist with the daily living activities of those whose arms are compromised by muscular disease or the aging process. The parallel elastic-arm support consists of a compliant mechanism with combined passive and active components for human interaction and to reach the user's desired positions. The achievement of these tasks requires impedance control, which can change the virtual stiffness, damping coefficients, and equilibrium points of the system; however, the desired-position tracking by the impedance control is limited when the end-effector weight varies according to the equipping of diverse objects. A prompt algorithm regarding weight calibration and friction compensation is adopted to overcome this problem. A result comparison shows that, by accurately assessing the desired workspace, the proposed algorithm is more effective for the accomplishment of the desired activities.

In this paper, a method for reducing seismic responses of adjacent buildings is studied that involves connecting two buildings with energy-dissipating devices, such as MR dampers. For the vibration control of the adjacent buildings, a fuzzy control technique with semi-active MR dampers is proposed. A fuzzy controller, which can appropriately modulate the damping forces by controlling the input voltage in real time, is designed according to the proposed method. To verify the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations are performed. In the numerical simulations, historical earthquake records with diverse frequency contents and different peak values are used. For the purpose of comparison, an uncontrolled system, a passive control system and a semi-active fuzzy control system are considered. The comparative results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control technique, i.e. the numerical results show that the fuzzy controlled semi-active MR dampers can effectively reduce the earthquake responses of the adjacent structures.
A frequency-domain method is developed for evaluating the earthquake input energy to two building structures connected by viscous dampers. It is shown that the earthquake input energies to respective building structures and viscous connecting dampers can be defined as works done by the boundary forces between the subsystems on their corresponding displacements. It is demonstrated that the proposed energy transfer function is very useful for clear understanding of dependence of energy consumption ratios in respective buildings and connecting viscous dampers on their properties. It can be shown that the area of the energy transfer function for the total system is constant regardless of natural period and damping ratio because the constant Fourier amplitude of the input acceleration, relating directly the area of the energy transfer function to the input energy, indicates the Dirac delta function and only an initial velocity (kinetic energy) is given in this case. Owing to the constant area property of the energy transfer functions, the total input energy to the overall system including both buildings and connecting viscous dampers is approximately constant regardless of the quantity of connecting viscous dampers. This property leads to an advantageous feature that, if the energy consumption in the connecting viscous dampers increases, the input energies to the buildings can be reduced drastically. For the worst case analysis, critical excitation problems with respect to the impulse interval for double impulse (simplification of pulse-type impulsive ground motion) and multiple impulses (simplification of long-duration ground motion) are considered and their solutions are provided.
Pyrotechnic separation devices have been widely used as holding and release mechanism for deployable appendage. However, pyro-shock can cause temporal or permanent damage on shock sensitive components such as electronics, mechanism, and brittle components. This study proposed a low-stiffness blade based passive shock absorber using a multi-layered stiffener laminated with viscoelastic acrylic tapes for reducing transmitted pyro-shock upon explosion of pyrotechnic separation devices. The multi-layered structure with viscoelastic tape has high-damping characteristics to effectively secure structural integrity of low-stiffness blades under the launch environment. The design effectiveness was verified through a shock test by dropping a pendulum. The structural integrity of the shock absorber under a launch environment was evaluated through structural analysis under load conditions with a deployable payload.
In conventional seismic design, structures are assumed to be fixed at the base. To reduce the impact of earthquake loading, while at the same time providing an economically feasible structure, minor damage is tolerated in the form of controlled plastic hinging at predefined locations in the structure. Uplift is traditionally not permitted because of concerns that it would lead to collapse. However, observations of damage to structures that have been through major earthquakes reveal that partial and temporary uplift of structures can be beneficial in many cases. Allowing a structure to move as a rigid body is in fact one way to limit activated seismic forces that could lead to severe inelastic deformations. To further reduce the induced seismic energy, slip-friction connectors could be installed to act both as hold-downs resisting overturning and as contributors to structural damping. This paper reviews recent research on the concept, with a focus on timber shear walls. A novel approach used to achieve the desired sliding threshold in the slip-friction connectors is described. The wall uplifts when this threshold is reached, thereby imparting ductility to the structure. To resist base shear an innovative shear key was developed. Recent research confirms that the proposed system of timber wall, shear key, and slip-friction connectors, are feasible as a ductile and low-damage structural solution. Additional numerical studies explore the interaction between vertical load and slip-friction connector strength, and how this influences both the energy dissipation and self-centring capabilities of the rocking structure.

A 3 kW grid-tied PV inverter with Gallium nitride high-electron mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) for domestic commercialization was developed using boost converter and full-bridge inverter with LCL filter topology. Recently, many GaN HEMTs are manufactured as surface mount packages because of their lower parasitic inductance characteristic than standard TO (transistor outline) packages. A surface mount packaged GaN HEMT releases heat through either top or bottom cooling method. IGOT60R070D1 is selected as a key power semiconductor because it has a top cooling method and fairly low thermal resistances from junction to ambient. Its characteristics allow the design of a 3 kW inverter without forced convection, thereby providing great advantages in terms of easy maintenance and high reliability. 1EDF5673K is selected as a gate driver because its driving current and negative voltage output characteristics are highly optimized for IGOT60R070D1. An LCL filter with passive damping resistor is applied to attenuate the switching frequency harmonics to the grid-tied operation. The designed LCL filter parameters are validated with PSIM simulation. A prototype of 3 kW PV inverter with GaN HEMT is constructed to verify the performance of the power conversion system. It achieved high power density of 614 W/L and peak power efficiency of 99% for the boost converter and inverter.
