  • This paper presents an active vibration control of a flexible beam structure using a hybrid mount which consists of elastic rubber and Piezoelectric material. After identifying stiffness and damping properties of the rubber and piezoelectric elements, a mechanical model of the hybrid mount is established. The mount model is then Incorporated into the beam structure, and the governing equation of motion is obtained in a state space. A sliding mode controller is designed in order to actively attenuate the vibration of the beam structure subjected to high frequency and small magnitude excitations. The controller is experimentally realized and control responses such as acceleration of the beam structure and force transmission through the hybrid mount are evaluated. In addition. a comparative work is done between the passive and hybrid mount systems.

  • Theoretical analysis of noise reduction by a membrane-duct system is presented. When acoustic waves propagate in the membrane-duct, the part of membrane is also excited and its motion is coupled with interior medium. For an infinite plane membrane-duct system, a simple coupled governing equation is derived and solved. One of the characteristics of dispersion relation is that evanescent waves occur below critical frequency. Attaching damping materials to the membrane may improve the absorption efficiency of acoustic energy. The results show that the membrane-duct system can be applied to diminish and absorb low frequency noise in duct instead of passive muffler, such as simple expansion chamber or absorption material.

  • This study develops a new hybrid passive energy dissipation device for seismic rehabilitation of an existing structure. The device is composed of a friction damper combined with a steel plate with vertical slits as a hysteretic damper. Analytical model is developed for the device, and the capacity of the hybrid device to satisfy a given target performance is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process. The effect of the device is verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses using seven earthquake records. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the hybrid damper and the maximum interstory drift of the SMRF with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

  • An MR(Magneto-Rheological) fluid damper is designed and applied to the semi-active suspension system of a 1/4 car model. The damping constant of the MR damper changes according to input current and the time delay of the damper is included in the system dynamics. The passive method, LQ control and Frequency shaped LQ control are compared in experiments. The advantage of the proposed frequency shaped LQ control is that the ride comfort improves in frequency range from 4 to 8Hz where human body is most sensitive and the driving safety improves around the resonance frequency of unsprung mass, 11Hz. The experiments using a 1/4 car model show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • As a vehicle speed increases, more vibration energy is transmitted from chassis to a driver. Current isolation system for the driver's seat by damping control can reduce the transmitted vibration energy near resonance area. But in higher frequency region than natural frequency multiplied by $\sqrt{2}$, the vibration energy transmitted to the driver has a tendency to be increased. Therefore, the method by natural frequency reduction of the system is preferred to increase the effectiveness of the anti-vibration. However, the natural frequency could not be freely reduced due to the nature of the isolation system structure. A new passive suspension system to reduce the natural frequency is proposed. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show better vibration attenuation compared with the current isolation system.

  • The coupled finite/boundary element method is used in numerical analysis for acoustic radiation from the vibration of rectangular composite plate which is simply supported. This analysis is validated using the Wallace equation for an isotropic plate. Active control of sound fields has been carried out using 3 pairs of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and a pair of viscoelastic material by passive constrained layer damping treatment. The results show that the optimal placement of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and VE patch is required to control the sound fields from a vibrating composite plate.

  • This paper presents a piezoelectric shunt methodology to reduce unwanted vibration of optical disk drive(O.D.D.). After briefly investigating a second-order mechanical vibration absorber model, the O.D.D. structure is incorporated with the piezoelectric shunt circuit. In order to evaluate feasibility of multi-mode passive damping of the structure, admittance measurement of piezoceramic is undertaken. The parameters are optimally tuned by admittance measurement results on the basis of the circuit model and displacement transmissibility is evaluated. To verify validity of admittance measurement result, experiment is performed and vibration reduction is achieved at two different modes.

  • In this paper, a visco-hysteretic vibration absorber (VA) is proposed to increase the flutter speed of an airfoil and enhance damping in the pre- and post-flutter regimes. The passive system consists of a parallel arrangement of a dashpot and a rateindependent hysteretic element, represented by the Bouc-Wen differential model. The equations of motion are obtained and various tools of linear and nonlinear dynamics are employed to study the effects of the visco-hysteretic VA in the pre- and postflutter ranges.

  • In the first part of this paper, an analysis of the cab noise of a selected agricultural tractor was presented. In this study, using the results of the previous analysis, two passive noise control measures of the sound insulation and absorption were conducted to reduce the noise level inside the cab. These measures of noise control reduced the total noise level by 6.2㏈(A) at the operator position inside the cab. In order to further reduce the cab noise, particularly, of lower frequencies than 630Hz, stiffness and damping of the floor panel should be enforced. It was also suggested that a proper suspension for the cab mounting is necessary to reduce the level of structure-born noises.

  • Spectral element method (SEM) is introduced for the fully coupled structural dynamic problems, In this paper, the beam with passive constrained layered damping (PCLD) treatments is considered as a representative problems. The beam consists of a viscoelastic layer that is sandwiched between the base beam structure and an elastic layer, The fully coupled equations of motion for a PCLD beam are derived, The equations of motion are derived first by using Hamilton's principle, From this equations of motion, the spectral element is formulated for the vibration analysis by use of the SEM, As an illustrative example, a cantilevered beam is considered. It is shown that, as the thickness of VEM layer vanishes, the results become a simple layer beam's that.
