An innovative safety concept for a light water reactor has been developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. It is a unique concept that adopts both a fast heat transfer mechanism for a small containment and a changing mechanism of the cooling geometry to take advantage of the potential, thermal, and dynamic energies of the cold water in the containment. It can bring about rapid cooling of the containment and long-term cooling of the decay heat. By virtue of this innovative concept, nuclear fuel damage events can be prevented. The ultimate heat transfer mechanism contributes to minimization of the heat exchanger size and containment volume. A small containment can ensure the underground construction, which can use river or seawater as an ultimate heat sink. The changing mechanism of the cooling geometry simplifies several safety systems and unifies diverse functions. Simplicity of the present safety system does not require any operator actions during events or accidents. Therefore, the unique safety concept of PX can realize both economic competitiveness and inherent safety.
The numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal-fluid phenomena occurred inside the experimental apparatus during a PCCS, used to remove heat released in accidents from a containment of light water nuclear power plant, operation. Numerical simulations of the flow and heat transfer caused by wall condensation inside the containment simulation vessel (CSV), which equipped with 18 vertical heat exchanger tubes, were conducted using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the wall condensation model were used for turbulence closure and wall condensation, respectively. The simulation using the actual size of the apparatus. However, rather than simulating the whole experimental apparatus in consideration of the experimental cases, calculation resources, and calculation time, the simulation model was prepared only in CSV. Selective simulation was conducted to verify the effects of non-condensable gas(NC gas) concentration, CSV internal pressure, and wall sub-cooling conditions. First, as a result of the internal flow of CSV, it was observed that downward flow due to condensation occurred surface of the vertical tube and upward flow occurred in the distant place. Natural convection occurred actively around the heat exchanger tube. Due to this rising and falling internal flow, natural circulation occurred actively around the heat exchanger tubes. Next, in order to check the performance of built-in condensation model using according to the non-condensable gas concentration, CSV internal flow and wall sub-cooling, the heat flux values were compared with the experimental results. On average, the results were underestimated with and error of about 25%. In addition, the influence of CSV internal pressure and wall sub-cooling was small, but when the condensate was highly generated due to the low non-condensable gas concentration, the error was large compared to the experimental values. This is considered to be due to the nature of the condensation model of the CFX code. However, in spite of the limitations of CFD, it is valid to use the built-in condensation model of CFD for PCCS performance prediction from a conservative perspective.
Recently, the coverage of urban forests has been rapidly decreasing as the cities are created and expanding. Consequently, there arise urban problems such as heat island effect, urban flooding, urban desertification and so on. In this context, green roof systems is considered to be an efficient alternative to deal with these problems. However, it is difficult to apply green roof to new buildings since the majority of the buildings in cities are already constructed and the demand for new building constructions is not high enough. Therefore, it should be considered to apply green roof system to existing buildings for resolving various problems. This study evaluates heating and cooling energy consumption based on the combination of passive design factors such as wall, roof, window insulation in addition to a green roof system applied to an existing house by using an energy simulation program. Total 8 potential improvement cases are developed. Each case is applied to the same house with different insulation standard for simulations. Through the analysis of the simulated cases with the chosen test house, it is confirmed that heating energy consumption decreases as improvement cases are applied, but cooling energy consumption is relatively not much affected by each improvement case. In addition, when each improvement case is applied to already highly insulated house, the effect of thermal energy improvement decreases while the same improvement that is applied to the case with low insulated house tends to yield higher improvement rate.

A new advanced integral reactor of 330 MWt thermal capacity named SMART (System-Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor) is currently under development in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for multi-purpose applications. Modular once-through steam generator (SG) and self-pressurizing pressurizer equipped with wet thermal insulator and cooler are essential components of the SMART. The SMART Provides safety systems such as Passive Residual Heat Removal System (PRHRS). In this study, a computer code for performance analysis of the PRHRS is developed by modeling relevant components and systems of the SMART. Using this computer code, a performance analysis of the PRHRS is performed in order to check whether the passive cooling concept using the PRHRS is feasible. The results of the analysis show that PRHRDS of the SMART has excellent passive heat removal characteristics.
Cooling the building by natural ventilation is one of the passive methods widely used from ancient times. It can be effectively applied especially in case of cooling load during the intermediate season of the year. In this study, the effect of 4 cases of window ventilation control mode which are 'Always Close', 'Temperature', 'Enthalpy' and 'Always Open' is simulated by Energyplus program and analyzed to improve the comfort of occupants and reduce energy consumption of the school classroom.
The scaled water-cooled Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) experimental facility reproduces a passive safety feature to be implemented in Generation IV nuclear reactors. It keeps the reactor cavity and other internal structures in operational conditions by removing heat leakage from the reactor pressure vessel. The present work uses Flownex one-dimensional thermal-fluid code to model the facility and predict the experimental thermal-hydraulic behavior. Two representative steady-state cases defined by the bulk volumetric flow rate are simulated (Re = 2,409 and Re = 11,524). Results of the cavity outlet temperature, risers' temperature profile, and volumetric flow split in the cooling panel are also compared with the experimental data and RELAP system code simulations. The comparisons are in reasonable agreement with the previous studies, demonstrating the ability of Flownex to simulate the RCCS behavior. It is found that the low Re case of 2,409, temperature and flow split are evenly distributed across the risers. On the contrary, there's an asymmetry trend in both temperature and flow split distributions for the high Re case of 11,524.
Purpose: In Korea, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy performance standard of buildings is being reinforced with goals of Passive House until 2017 and Zero Energy House until 2025 in order to reduce emissions from buildings which constitute a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to achieve the target of Zero Energy House, it is certainly necessary to develop renewable energy that can replace cooling and heating energy occupying a significant amount of building energy consumption after increasing the energy performance firstly. Method: In this study, effects of heat in greenhouse heated by solar heating on indoor heating were analyzed by constructing a greenhouse in front of the Low Energy Building. Result: As a result, indoor temperature was increased by peak average $27.8^{\circ}C$, peak average $6.8^{\circ}C$ was increased from when heat in greenhouse has not been used for heating and indoor surface temperature was increased by average $5.1^{\circ}C$. It shows it can be possible to use heat in greenhouse for heating, if the heating effects can be same as this experimental result because Energy Saving-Type buildings such as Low Energy House or Passive House keep from 18 to $20^{\circ}C$ in winter. Therefore, even if energy supply is cut off by disasters and other reasons, cooling and heating can be possible for some time.
The advanced passive pressurized water reactor (PWR) is being constructed in China and the passive residual heat removal (PRHR) system was designed to remove the decay heat. During accident scenarios with increase of heat removal from the primary coolant system, the actuation of the PRHR will enhance the cooldown of the primary coolant system. There is a risk of power excursion during the cooldown of the primary coolant system. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the thermal hydraulic behavior of the reactor coolant system (RCS) at this condition. The advanced passive PWR model, including major components in the RCS, is built by SCDAP/RELAP5 code. The thermal hydraulic behavior of the core is studied for two typical accident sequences with PRHR actuation to investigate the core cooling capability with conservative assumptions, a main steam line break (MSLB) event and inadvertent opening of a steam generator (SG) safety valve event. The results show that the core is ultimately shut down by the boric acid solution delivered by Core Makeup Tank (CMT) injections. The effects of CMT boric acid concentration and the activation delay time on accident consequences are analyzed for MSLB, which shows that there is no consequential damage to the fuel or reactor coolant system in the selected conditions.
Remodeling for an aged building is emerging as a potential alternative towards the future of the building industry. It is a more effective method than the new construction in environmental friendly view. Most of remodeling were aimed at the improvement of the function of the deteriorated finishing materials. But, at the early stage of remodeling process, energy performance of a building can be improved by adopting passive design solutions such as daylighting and natural ventilation. The purpose of this study is to explain the passive design strategy in remodeling process and to suggest a application of LT method. LT method is an energy-design tool which responds to parameters available early in design development. It provides an output of annual primary energy for lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation in non-domestic buildings. LT method basically uses the concept of passive zone and non-passive zones and should be used to evaluate the energy performance of a number of options and to make comparisons. In this paper, the process of LT method is introduced and investigated an applicability in our office building.
Today, the world energy consumption in buildings occupies more than 30%. In our country, the energy consumption in buildings also occupies 25% of the entire national energy consumption. With the increasing demand of energy saving in architectural fields, there is a more interest in low-energy construction. For these low-energy housings, our country is planning to apply the energy-saving design standards at the level of passive houses in 2017. However, there is still a limitation in energy saving only with the standards on the performance of envelope in buildings. This means that unless a building is airtight even though it was well-insulated, cooling and heating energy consumption will increase due to the infiltration and leakage. Therefore, this study aims to make a comparative analysis of airtight performance by conducting a blower door test on the housings applied with passive designs, analyze the reasons why most houses fall short of the airtightness standards, and complement the airtightness problems in the inadequate parts of the buildings in order to save building energy.
