Train Scheduling and Rescheduling In Pakistan

  • This paper provides an overview of Pakistan Railways scheduling and rescheduling. First of all, Pakistan Railways is introduced with its brief history and importance in this country. Assets of this network with passengers and freight using this are given. Current hope less situation is leading to privatization of this system as well as promoting short distance traveler to use road and Government efforts to retain is also presented. Train scheduling in Pakistan is being done manually, based on manual time distance graph preparation and resolution of conflicts based on manager's experience and ability. In Real-time management of this traffic Lahore head office is connected with six control stations in the Pakistan, decision for resolution of any disturbance is coordinated among them. It is recommended that computer aided tools must be developed for this system to help traffic managers and it is needed to invest on the segments to increase their speed limits which might attract passengers to use this mode of transportation with high priority.

부산광역시 도시철도 혼잡도 완화를 위한 디지털 트윈 시뮬레이션 모델 개발 (A Digital Twin Simulation Model for Reducing Congestion of Urban Railways in Busan)

  • As a representative concept of the fourth industrial revolution era where everything is digitized, digital twin means analyzing and optimizing a complex system using a simulation model synchronized with the system. In this paper, we propose a digital twin simulation model for the efficient operation of urban railways in Busan. Due to the geopolitical nature of Busan, where there are many mountains and narrow roads, the railways are more useful than other public transportation. However, this inversely results in a high level of congestion, which is an inconvenience to citizens and may be fatal to the spread of the virus, such as COVID19. Considering these characteristics, the proposed model analyzes the congestion level of the railways in Busan. The model is developed based on a mathematical formalism called discrete-event system specification and deduces the congestion level and the average waiting time of passengers depending on the train schedule. In addition, a new schedule to reduce the congestion level is derived through particle swarm optimization, which helps the efficient operation of the railways. Although the model is developed for the railways in Busan, it can also be used for railways in other cities where a high level of congestion is a problem.

  • 대도시 고밀도 도시철도에서는 상습 열차운행 지연과 혼잡으로 승객의 불편과 불만이 커지고 있다. 도시철도는 열차운행의 비정규성과 수요의 불확정성 등 지역간 철도와는 다른 특성을 가지고 있다. 도시철도 운영회사에서는 실적자료를 기반으로 열차운행품질과 혼잡도와 같은 서비스품질을 집계하여 관리하고 있다. 그러나 수요와 승객행태에 따라 열차운행이 동적으로 변하는 특성을 가지고 있어 실제 느끼는 서비스품질을 표현하기에는 한계가 있다. 본 논문에서는 승객 관점에서의 서비스품질을 계량화하고, 도시철도에서 수요에 따른 정차시분 및 열차운행상태의 동적변화를 예측할 수 있는 시뮬레이션 방법과 지연/혼잡 해소방안에 대한 실제 사례를 기반으로 운행서비스품질의 변화를 예측할 수 있는 방법론을 제시한다.

Danger Estimation with HIC and Risk Curve in Passengers Falls from Running Rail Cars

  • In 2001, an independent official board was constituted in Japan to investigate aircraft and railway accidents. In the past 10 years, many accidents and serious incidents have been investigated and these official reports were published by the board, on which the author had sat for 9 years as boarding member. In the interim, there were several train disasters which mocked our trust in railways and also many apparent trivial incidents. In recent years, serious incidents, which a door of running rail cars opens suddenly with some trouble, happen 2 or 3 times in a year. For the past 10 years, such incidents have happened 14 times and 13 cases of them were closed by the board mentioned above. In these 13 cases, no one fell off the rail car, so that the death toll was none luckily. In this paper, these 13 serious incidents are picked up among all the reports published by the board and outlined using some tables. Especially, fall accidents of passengers are discussed mainly from the view point of impact force and duration time. Then, the equation of HIC (Head Injury Criteria) and the risk curves in terms of the HIC are dealt with properly.

Retail Distribution Strategies for Train Tickets: The Extended UTAUT Model

  • Purpose: As mobile devices are commonly used and contact-free services are widespread due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the recent distribution environment, this study suggests retail strategies for consumers using high-speed railways. To this end, we analyzed how consumer perception on technologies necessary for use of mobile apps is related to the attitude that drives consumers to continue using the app services. Research design, data and methodology: Based on the extended unified theory of technology acceptance and use of technology model by Venkatesh, Morris, Davis and Davis (2003), we added variables proposed by existing theories that studied the technology acceptance model from multiple perspectives and empirically analyzed the relationship between user satisfaction and use intention with structural equation modeling. Results: As expected, factors necessary for the use of app services such as performance expectancy, social influence, price value, facilitating conditions, security, and aesthetics had positive effects on user satisfaction, whereas the effect of effort expectancy on user satisfaction was rejected. And user satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on intention to use. Conclusions: The results provide implications that strategic retail management of the above factors can motivate passengers to continuously use high-speed railways.

Mobile Hotspot Network System for High-Speed Railway Communications Using Millimeter Waves

  • We propose a millimeter wave (MMW)-based mobile hotspot network (MHN) system for application in high-speed railways that is capable of supporting a peak backhaul link throughput of 1 Gbps per train at 400 km/h. The MHN system can be implemented in subways and high-speed trains to support passengers with smart devices and provide access to the Internet. The proposed system can overcome the inherent high path loss in MMW through system designs and high antenna gains. We present a simulation of the system performance that shows that a fixed beamforming strategy can provide high signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio similar to those of an adaptive beamforming strategy, with the exception of 15% of the train path in which the network can use link adaptation with low-order modulation formats or trigger a handover to maintain the connection. We also demonstrate the feasibility of the MHN system using a test bed deployed in Seoul subway line 8. The backhaul link throughput varies instantaneously between 200 Mbps and 500 Mbps depending on the SNR variations while the train is running. During the field trial, the smartphones used could make connections through offloading.

도시철도 소음저감시스템 시공기술 개발 (Development of Construction Technology for Noise Abatement System on Urban Railway)

  • Recently, the number of passengers using urban railway has been increased by reasons of the reductions of car use due to high fuel prices and the enlightenment about the environment. Above all, the noise and the vibration coming from the friction between the wheel and the rail of trains in operation which is not only a factor that hinders riding comforts but causes civil complaints. Furthermore, the noise has become social issues from tightening the relevant regulations by the government since January 2010. Although ballasted tracks were constructed on urban railways at the time of opening, they have been changed into slab tracks because slab tracks require much less maintenance. However, in view of sound absorptivity of track, slab tracks have 10 times less capability than ballasted tracks(ballasted track : 0.5~0.6/slab tracks : 0.06) results more noise than that of ballasted tracks as much as 3dB(A) since slab tracks emit more reflection noise. Therefore, in order to minimize reflection noise on slab tracks, noise abatement system has been developed as a national R&D program to apply on-site test. It is assumed that the construction technology developed in this study can be used not only as basic data for the on-site test for the noise reduction in urban railway but as an efficient construction method.

철도곡선부 개량에 따른 열차운행시간 단축효과에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Shortening Effect of Train Running Time as Railway curve sections improvement)

  • 교통기관으로서의 역할을 충분히 수행하기 위해서 철도속도향상을 통한 운행시간 단축은 인간의 생활양식 고급화 및 시간가치의 증대로 인해 절실히 요구되는 사항으로 부각되고 있다. 특히 열차운행속도에 매우 큰 영향을 주는 선형 요소는 곡선구간으로서, 우리나라의 경우 곡선구간이 많은 비율을 차지하고 있어 이 구간에서의 속도향상은 전체구간의 운행시간을 단축시킬 수 있기 때문에 우리나라의 선형에 대한 특성을 고려하여 곡선부 전체구간에 걸쳐서는 선형을 지배하고 있는 요소의 개량 및 부분적 개량방법으로 사용되는 완화곡선 연장기법을 각 단계에 걸쳐 주행안정성 및 승차감의 지표로서 이용하고 있는 횡가속도 값을 적용하여 속도향상를 통한 운행시간 단축효과를 얻었다. 이 결과 우리나라 선형조건상 곡선부 전구간을 개량하는 것이 운행시간을 단축하기 위해서는 완화곡선의 연장 방법 보다 효과적임을 나타내고 있다.

고속철도 터널 입구후드에 관한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on High-Speed railway Tunnel Entrance Hood)

  • High-speed railway trains entering and leaving tunnels generate finite amplitude pressure wave which propagate back and forth along the tunnels, reflecting at the open ends of the tunnels and at other discontinuities such as ventilation shafts and the train themselves. In present day railways, the magnitudes of the pressure waves are much too small to cause structual damage, but they are a serious potential source of aural discomport for passengers on unsealed trains. Almost always do the pressure waves propagating along the tunnels lead to a hazardous impulse noise near the exit portal of the tunnel. In order to alleviate such undesirable phenomena, some control strategies have been applied to the compression wave propagating inside the tunnel. The objective of the current work is to investigate the effect of tunnel entrance hoods on the entry compression wave at the vicinity of the tunnel entrance. Three types of entrance hoods were tested by the numerical method using the characteristics of method for a wide range of train speeds. The results show that the maximum pressure gradient of compression wave can be considerably reduced by the tunnel entrance hood. Desirable hood shape for reduction of the pressure transients and impulse noise was found to be of abrupt type hood with its cross-sectional area 2.5times the tunnel area.

철도역사 편의점 매출에 영향을 미치는 입지요인에 관한 연구 : 스토리웨이(Storyway)를 중심으로 (A Study on the Location Determinants for the Sales of Railroad Convenience Stores - With Focus on the Convenience Store "Storyway" -)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 철도역사내에서 영업 중인 스토리웨이 편의점 매출에 영향을 미치는 입지요인에 대하여 분석하고자 함이다. 기존 선행연구는 주거 상업지역 또는 도로변에 위치한 편의점 위주로 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 철도교통로 인한 철도역사의 특성을 반영하여 기존 선행연구와의 차별성을 두었다. 연구의 대상 편의점은 전국 198개 역사 내에서 운영 중인 스토리웨이 301개이며 전국과 수도권으로 구분하여 더미변수와 헤도닉 가격 모형 함수를 활용한 다중회귀분석을 시행하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 철도이용인원과 점포 면적은 매출액에 정(+)의 영향을 미치고 있었으나, 다른 브랜드 경쟁 편의점은 부(-)의 영향을 미치고 있었다. 둘째, ktx정차역 등 국철역이나 전철역 등 철도역사 형태는 매출액에 별다른 영향을 주지 못하며, 환승여부에 따라 미 환승역이 다른 환승역보다 매출액이 더 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 점포 위치에 있어서도 승강장과 연결통로에 위치한 점포는 맞이방이나 광장에 위치한 점포보다 매출액이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 현재 국내의 편의점은 과다 경쟁으로 인하여 쇠퇴기에 들어간 시점에서 향후 철도역사내 편의점 창업시에는 철도이용인원과 면적, 경쟁점, 환승여부, 그리고 맞이방이나 광장 등 고객이 가시성이 좋은 곳에서 창업을 해야 한다는 시사점을 지닌다.
