Although cleaner and cheaper deinking of ONP could be performed at the neutral or low alkaline condition excessive loss from froth-flotation is unavoidable and so reduction of alkali or caustic soda dosage sacrifices recycling yield. Now the new trade-off regarding alkali dosage versus flotation yield is urgently required in order to set the optimized neutral or low alkaline deinking process of ONP. Lipase from Thermomyces Lanuginosus has an effect on desizing and deacetylation reaction and it could be applied to the stock of pre flotation secondary stage in order to reduce the flotation reject without the sacrifice of optical properties of flotation accepts. Instead of inorganic base, lipase could be applied as a biochemical catalyst for the selective modification of valuable hydrophobic particles in deinking stock, for example cellulose fines and inorganic fillers covered by hydrophobic additives or contaminants. When the enzymatic hydrolysis of ester bond could be made on the surface of hydrophobic particulates, unwanted float of fine particles could be prevented. Now the enhancement of flotation selectivity or the modification of the hydrophobicity of deinking stock is expected to be promoted by the enzymatic pre treatment. And the reduction of recycling cost with the saves of raw material, recovered paper would be possible as a result.
The effects of suspended solids size on culture water quality were determined in a commercial recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. The particulate phase of the culture water was serially divided into six size fractions using 300, 200, 100, 75, 45, and 26 ${\mu}m$ pore size stainless sieves. The total, dissolved, and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus, and suspended solids for each fraction were determined. The concentration ranges in the fractions were: total nitrogen, 164-148 mg $L^{-1}$; total phosphorus, 20.4-15.5 mg $L^{-1}$; and total suspended solids, 8.1-6.1 mg $L^{-1}$. The concentration of total nitrogen and total phosphorus decreased significantly (P<0.05) with a 26 ${\mu}m$ and 200 ${\mu}m$ filter pore size, respectively. Nutrients from dissolved organic substances were much higher than from particulates. Analysis of particle size fractionation and its effects on water quality is useful to estimate removal efficiencies of a commercial effluent screening device for solid management and development of solid removal systems.
An annular denuder filter pack sampling system (ADS) was used to collect acidic air pollutants in Pusan. During the study period (from June 1995 to November 1995), forty eight samples were collected every 12 hours starting from 6:00 in the morning. These samples were devided into two sets of data for day (6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.) and night (6:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m.). The chemical species were analyzed for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$ in the gas Phase, and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ in the particulate phase. The mean concentrations measured from this study were 0.24, 1.91, 30.07 and 4.24 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$, respectively. The mean concentrations of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^+{\ulcorner}$ were 1.95, 7.36 and 3.48 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. The mean concentrations of gaseous species except for HN $O_2$ were higher in daytime than in nighttime, but the reverse was true in the particulates except for N $H_4$$^{+}$. +/..
The phenomenon of yellow sand (dust clouds) occurred in Korea during the spring of 1993 and 1994 is studied in detail. In total 6 cases including 15 days of yellow sand were observed in 1993 and the annual number of these events was found to increased. Examinations in this study include meteorological charts satellite imagery, pilot reports (PIREP) of Korea Air Force, and air concentrations of total suspended particulates(TSP). We present on estimation of total atmospheric loadings based on the observation and theory. According to the PIREP, in general the dust clouds travelled in the lower troposphere up to the level 5km. The visibility within the clouds was in the range of 3-8km The area covered by yellow sand in an event exceeded 0.4 M $\textrm{km}^2$ . According to trajectory analyses, dust clouds invaded Korea in April and May 1993 were landed in the sink area after 2~4 days travelling for 2,000~3,000km from a source region. Estimates of total atmospheric loadings of a dust cloud for April 23~24 in 1993 were 1.5 M ton. In addition, 7 dust storms were also reported in synoptic observations in NW China and Mongolia during the spring in 1994. The yellow sand was not reported with meteorological observations in Korea, however pilots reported significant dust clouds over the Yellow Sea on 8 and 13 April and 20 May 1994.
Mass removed from crystalline silicon samples during high power single-pulse laser ablation was studied by measuring the resulting crater morphology with a white light interferometric microscope. The volume and depth of the craters show a strong nonlinear change as the laser irradiance increases across a threshold value, that is, approximately $2.2{\times}10^{10}\;W/cm^2$. Time-resolved shadowgraph images of the ablation plume show the ejection of large particulates from the sample for laser irradiance above the threshold, with a time delay of about 300-400 nsec. The thickness of superheated liquid layer near the critical temperature was numerically estimated, considering the transformation of liquid metal into liquid dielectric near the critical state (i.e., induced transparency). The estimated thickness of the superheated layer at a delay time of 200 nsec agreed with the measured crater depths, suggesting that induced transparency promotes the formation of a deep superheated liquid layer which leads to an explosive boiling responsible for the sudden increase of crater volume and depth.
Higher plants can be valuable genetic assay systems for monitoring environmental pollutants and evaluating their biological toxicity. Two assays are considered ideal for in situ monitoring and testing of soil, airborne and aqueous mutagenic agents; the Tradescantia stamen hair assay for somatic cell mutations and the Tradescantia micronucleus assay for chromosome aberrations. Both assays can be used for in vivo and in vitro testing of mutagens. Since higher plant systems are now recognized as excellent indicators and have unique advantages over in situ monitoring and screening, higher plant systems could be accepted by regulatory authorities as an alternative first-tier assay system for the detection of possible genetic damages resulting from the pollutants or chemicals used and produced by industrial sectors. It has been concluded that potential mutagen and carcinogen such as the heavy metals among indoor air particulates, volatile compounds in the working places, soil, and water pollutants contribute to the overall health risk. This contribution can be considerable under certain circumstances. It is therefore important to identify the level of genotoxic activity in the environment and to relate it to the biomarkers of a health risk in humans. The results from the higher plant bioassays could make a significant contribution to assessing the risks of pollutants and protecting the public from agents that can cause mutation and/or cancer. The plant bioassays, which are relatively inexpensive and easy to handle, are recommended for the scientists who are interested in monitoring pollutants and evaluating their environmental toxicity to living organisms.
Vehicle emissions from highway landuse include different pollutants such as heavy metals, oil and grease and particulates from fuels, brake pad wear and tire wear. Since highways are impervious and have high pollutant mass emissions from vehicular activity, it is considered as stormwater intensive landuses. Therefore this research was performed to understand the magnitude of first flush and to suggest the criteria of first flush for storm runoff management in highways. The fractions of washed-off mass are very high in first 30% of runoff volume, which suggests a definition of first flush. The washed-off mass stabilizes after 30% of the runoff volume and it is apparent that treatment capacity in the early part of a storm is more valuable than treatment capacity in the later part of the storm. Using the criteria of "high" first flush and "medium" first flush, as 50% of the mass in the first 30% of the volume, and 30 to 50% in the first 30% volume, respectively, more than 30% of the storms showed high first flush. A "first flush friendly" best management practice(BMP), meaning a BMP that can treat a high percentage or all of the initial flow, would be advantageous up to 80% of the events.

Since 1980, the water quality of ultra-pure water has been rapidly improved, and presently ultra-pore water producing equipment for 64Mbit is in operation. Table 1 shows the degree of integration of DRM and required water quality exlmple. The requirements of the ultra-pure water for 64Mbit are resistivity: 18.2 MQ/cm or higher, number of particulates: 1 pc/ml or less (0.05 $\mu$m or larger). bacteria count: 0.1 pc/l or less. TOC (Total Organic Carbon, index of organic snbstance) : 1ppb or less, dissolved oxygen: 5ppb or less, silica: 0.5ppb or less, heavy metal ions: 5ppb or less. The effect of metals on the silicon wafer has been well known, and recently it has been reported that the existence of organic substance in ultra-pure water is closely related to the device defect, drawing attention. It is reported that if organic substance sticks to the natural oxidation film, the oxide film remaims on the organic substance attachment in the hydrofluoric acid treatment (removal of natural oxidation film). The organic substance forms film on the silicon wafer, and harmful elements such as metals and N.P.S., components contained in the organic substance and the bad effect due to the generatinn of silicon carbide cannot be forgotten. In order to remove various impurities in raw water, many technological develoments (membrane, ion exchange, TOC removal, piping material, microanalysis, etc.) have been made with ultra-pure water producing equipment and put to practical use. In this paper, technologies put to practical use in recent ultra-pure vater producing equimeut are introduced.
