Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.

This aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and actual bending properties of particleboard, and to predict the bending properties of three-layer particleboard. Three kinds of raw materials, i.e. Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) strand, knife-milled Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga manziesii (Mirb) Franco), and hammer-milled matoa (Pometia spp.) obtained from wooden industry, were utilized as furnish for experimental panel with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) resin as binder. The NDE test was conducted by hit sounds using an FFT analyzer according to the spectrum peak of wave frequency, while the static bending test was conducted according to JIS A-5908. The results reveal that the dynamic Young's modulus as an NDE test has a potential for being used to predict the elastic bending of particleboards by a specific equation for adjusting its proper values. The values of NDE and static test are significantly different with a deviation range at 3-20%. The bending stiffness of three-layer particleboards manufactured from different wood species is predictable by observing the bending stiffness of two elements based on the thickness of its layers. The predicted values of bending stiffness and static test are significantly different with a deviation range at 5-24%.
When manufacturing beam by laminating particleboards, the mechanical properties of particleboad-laminated beam would be also improved if the properties, especially mechanical properties of particleboad be reinforced. In this study, steel wires were used to reinforce particleboard. This study was carried out to obtain the basic mechanical properties of the board composed of wood particle and steel wires, focusing on bending strength which is the important factors in laminated beam and it was tried to estimate the relationship between the properties of the particleboard-laminated beam. and the proportion of steel wires to wood particles in particleboards. The result obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The more steel wires used in boards, the higher value of modulus of rupture in bending was obtained, For example. the density 5 board composed of 14 numbers of steel wires showing 55% improved value than control board. 2. The board with lower density was also made better in higher value of elasticity, the density 0.5 board with 14 numbers of steel wires improved by 170%, the density 0.6 board by 86%, the 0.7 board by 37% and the 0.8 board by 26%. 3. The work to maximum load was improved with more steel wires. for example, the density 0.8 board with 14 numbers of steel wires improved by 31%.
Laser cutting tests were conducted to investigate the laser cutting characteristics of solid woods such as 25mm-thick white oak(Quercus acutissima) and maple(Acer mono), and wood-based panels such as 15mm-thick medium density fiberboard and particleboard. Test variables were laser power, cutting speed, grain direction, and moisture content. Specific cutting energy was measured and the qualities of cut surface were estimated in constant laser power. Specific cutting energy of white oak was larger than that of maple, and specific cutting energy of medium density fiberboard was smaller than that of particleboard. For both white oak and maple, specific cutting energy of green wood was smaller than that of air-dried wood because weight loss of moisture evaporation in green wood was larger than that in air-dried wood. In laser-cut surface, wood cells were not deformed and damaged, but in circular saw-cut surface fibers were pushed out and cut, and wood cells were deformed severely. However, mechanical surface roughness of saw-cut surface was smoother than that of laser-cut surface because of the existence of undeformed cell cavity in laser-cut surface.
Laboratory particleboards (PBs) were made with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins at four press times and two resin application rates. Enclosed caul system was used for collecting the exhaust gases materials generated during the hot-pressing of PB. Exhaust gases materials generated inside the enclosed caul during the hot-pressing of PB were collected in a controlled air stream. Formaldehyde from the exhaust gases collected was determined per a chromotropic method of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Method 3500. The test results showed that formaldehyde emissions during the hot-pressing of PB increased with increasing press time, UF resin mole ratio, and resin application rate.
This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of wood-based panels and wood-cement board for the possible uses as flooring and wall materials. The optimum cement/wood ratio(C/W ratio) of wood~cement board manufactured by clamp-pressing was from 2.7 to 3.2. The dimesional stability was superior in the C/W ratio of 3.2. Particularly, the dimensional stability of cement board using fine particle for particleboard face layer was favorable through three levels of C/W ratio. According to types of wooden material, bending strength of cement board using coarse particle for particleboard core layer or old newspaper(ONP) fiber was relatively higher than others. Thermal conductivities of wood-cement boards were no lower than that of gypsum board, and higher than those of plywood and boards. In case of wood-cement board of the C/W ratio of 2.7, the fire-proof performances of cement composite boards were greater than that of gypsum board, and weight loss reached to about a half of gypsum board. Then, wood-cement boards showed superior fire-proof performance compared to wood-based panels.

Particleboard(PB) is one of the most commonly used wood-based composite materials, which can be prepared by utilizing any kind of low grade wooden materials like waste wood which contains formaldehyde itself. Therefore, PB have been of considerable interest, in issues regarding the formaldehyde emission problems. Wood wastes are carbonized by the carbonization kiln at $800^{\circ}C$. Charcoal has been known as a formaldehyde adsorber. Thus, in this study, we fabricated PBs with carbonized waste particles cores, to examine the possibility of developing less formaldehyde emitting boards. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated by Korean Standard (KS F 3104). The moisture content of PBs ranged from 6.76 to 8.36%. Internal bond strengths decreased with the increase in the content of carbonized core particles. Formaldehyde emission showed minimum value at 25% of carbonized core particles, but the emission values increased when the amount of carbonized cote particles increased. When 25% of carbonized core particles was used, PBs met KS F 3104 standard properties.
Cutting depths, kerf widths and the maximum cutting speed were measured. Cutting depths were increased as focus of laser beam was moving from above the workpiece to on the surface of workpiece, and also to below the workpiece. Kerf widths were decreased as focus of laser beam was moving from above the workpiece to on the surface of workpiece, but were increased as focus of laser beam was moving from on the surface of workpiece to below the workpiece. Minimum kerf widths were obtained when focus of laser beam was positioned on the surface of workpiece. Cutting depths and kerf widths were decreased with increase in moisture content, and cutting depths and kerf widths of more dense white oak were smaller than those of maple. And also cutting depths and kerf widths of particleboard were smaller than those of medium density fiberboard.
Particleboards (PBs) were made from Pinus densiflora thinning particle with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin added casein and soybean as extender. The performance test results of the PB made showed that Pinus densiflora thinning log was suitable raw material for PB. As the extender addition in the UF resin was increased, the mechanical performance of the PB, bonded with the extended UF resin, were significantly decreased. However, casein and soybean can be used up to 15% and 20% of the UF resin solids respectively.
This study was to figure out proper Formaldehyde/Urea molar ratio of UF resin with satisfactory bonding strength of plywood and properties of particleboard. The six kinds of UF resins were manufactured with F/U molar ratio 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0. The boards were made of three kinds of raw materials : Veneer, Sliver-Particle and Strand-Particle. Manufacturing condition of plywood : amount of mixing resin was 150g/$m^2$. The fourty secs/mm simple-pressing schedule in the pressure 10kgf/$m^2$ was applied for 480mm${\times}$700mm board at the temperature of $110^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. Manufacturing condition of particleboard : Target density was 0.65g/$cm^2$. The stepwise 9 minutes- multi-pressing schedule in the maximum pressure 40kgf/$cm^2$, the minimum pressure 15kgf/$cm^2$ was applied for $480mm{\times}634mm{\times}12mm$ board at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. The results are as follows : I. In bonding strength, plywood which was made by F/U molar ratio 1.2 showed the highest value. Other molar ratio resin also gave the satisfied value of KS standard, 7.5kgf/$cm^2$. 2. In internal bond strength of particleboard, Sliver-Particleboard(SLPB) and Strand-Particleboard(STPB) varied respectively from 5.9kgf/$cm^2$ to 4.8kgf/$cm^2$, from 6.7kgf/$cm^2$ to 5.4kgf/$cm^2$. SLPB with F/U=1.2 and STPB with F/U=1.6 had higher IB value. Also, both SLPB and STPB showed lower IB value in F/U molar ratio 2.0 and 1.0. 3. SLPB and STPB with six kinds of UF resin respectively satisfied bending strength of KS standard 150 Type(130kgf/$cm^2$) and 200 Type(180kgf/$cm^2$). Bending strength data for both of SLPB and STPB showed little or no loss from F/U=1.8 to F/U=1.2. Also, STPB was approximately two times higher than that of SLPB. Therefore, the raw material's shape had more effect on bending strength than the FlU molar ratio. 4. F/U=1.6 and 1.4 showed the lower thickness swelling in SLPB and STPB. All of STPBs satisfied thickness swelling of KS standard, under 12%.
