  • In this paper, we introduce the methodological system design via feature selection using Principal Component Analysis and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms. The overall methodological system design comes from three kinds of modules such as preprocessing module, feature extraction module, and recognition module. First, Histogram equalization enhance the quality of image by exploiting contrast effect based on the normalized function generated from histogram distribution values of 2D face image. Secondly, PCA extracts feature vectors to be used for face recognition by using eigenvalues and eigenvectors obtained from covariance matrix. Finally the feature selection for face recognition among the entire feature vectors is considered by means of the Particle Swarm Optimization. The optimized Polynomial-based Radial Basis Function Neural Networks are used to evaluate the face recognition performance. This study shows that the proposed methodological system design is effective to the analysis of preferred face recognition.

  • Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is designed to find a single global optimal point. However, the PSO needs to be modified in order to find multiple optimal points of a multimodal function. These modifications usually divide a swarm of particles into multiple subswarms; in turn, these subswarms try to find their own optimal point, resulting in multiple optimal points. In this work, we present a new PSO algorithm, called coupling PSO to find multiple optimal points of a multimodal function based on coupling particles. In the coupling PSO, each main particle may generate a new particle to form a couple, after which the couple searches its own optimal point using non-stop-moving PSO algorithm. We tested the suggested algorithm and other ones, such as clustering PSO and niche PSO, over three analytic functions. The coupling PSO algorithm was also applied to solve a significant benchmark problem, the TEAM workshop problem 22.

  • The performance of speaker identifier is severely degraded in noisy environments. A study suggested the concept of observation membership for enhancing performances of speaker identifier with noisy speech [1]. The method scaled observation probabilities of input speech by observation identification values decided by SNR. In the paper [1], the authors suggested heuristic parameter values for membership function. In this paper we attempt to apply particle swarm optimization (PSO) for obtaining the optimal parameters for speaker identification in noisy environments. With the speaker identification experiments using the ETRI database we prove that the optimization approach can yield better performance than using only the original membership function.

  • The electromagnetic apparatus plays an important role in high power electrical systems. It is of great importance to provide an effective approach for the optimization of the high power electromagnetic apparatus. However, premature convergence and few Pareto solution set of the optimization for electromagnetic apparatus always happen. This paper proposed a modified multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on the niche sorting strategy. Applying to the modified algorithm, this paper guarantee the better Pareto optimal front with an enhanced distribution. Aiming at shortcomings in the closing bounce and slow breaking velocity of electromagnetic apparatus, the multi-objective optimization model was established on the basis of the traditional optimization. Besides, by means of the improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm, this paper processed the model and obtained a series of optimized parameters (decision variables). Compared with other different classical algorithms, the modified algorithm has a satisfactory performance in the multi-objective optimization problems in the electromagnetic apparatus.

  • Deployment of access point (AP) is a problem that must be considered in network planning. However, this problem is usually a NP-hard problem which is difficult to directly reach optimal solution. Thus, improved AP deployment optimization scheme based on swarm intelligence algorithm is proposed to research on this problem. First, the scheme estimates the number of APs. Second, the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is used to optimize the location and transmit power of APs. Finally, the greedy algorithm is used to remove the redundant APs. Comparing with multi-objective whale swarm optimization algorithm (MOWOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and grey wolf optimization (GWO), the proposed deployment scheme can reduce AP's transmit power and improves energy efficiency under different numbers of users. From the experimental results, the proposed deployment scheme can reduce transmit power about 2%-7% and increase energy efficiency about 2%-25%, comparing with MOWOA. In addition, the proposed deployment scheme can reduce transmit power at most 50% and increase energy efficiency at most 200%, comparing with PSO and GWO.

  • Cooperative communications can significantly improve the wireless transmission performance with the help of relay nodes. In cooperative communication networks, relay selection and power allocation are two key issues. In this paper, we propose a relay selection and power allocation scheme RS-PA-PSACO (Relay Selection-Power Allocation-Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) based on PSACO (Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) algorithm. This scheme can effectively reduce the computational complexity and select the optimal relay nodes. As one of the swarm intelligence algorithms, PSACO which combined both PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) algorithms is effective to solve non-linear optimization problems through a fast global search at a low cost. The proposed RS-PA-PSACO algorithm can simultaneously obtain the optimal solutions of relay selection and power allocation to minimize the SER (Symbol Error Rate) with a fixed total power constraint both in AF (Amplify and Forward) and DF (Decode and Forward) modes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the system performance significantly both in reliability and power efficiency at a low complexity.

  • Humanoid robot is the most suitable robot platform for effective human and robot interaction. However, the robot's complicated body structure containing more than twenty joint actuators makes it difficult to generate stable and elaborate postures using the conventional inverse kinematic method. This paper proposes an alternative approach to generate difficult postures of touching an object placed in front of the foot by the left or right hand with its torso bent forward in single support phase using the fast computational optimization method, particle swarm optimization. The simulated postures are also applied to a commercial humanoid robot platform, which validates the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • This study investigates some of swarm intelligence algorithms to tackle a traditional damage detection problem having stiffness degradation or damage in mechanical structures. Particle swarm(PSO) and ant colony optimization(ACO) methods have been exploited for localizing and estimating the location and extent damages in a structure. Both PSO and ACO are population-based, stochastic algorithms that have been developed from the underlying concept of swarm intelligence and search heuristic. A finite element (FE) model updating is implemented to minimize the difference in a set of natural frequencies between measured and baseline vibration data. Stiffness loss of certain elements is considered to simulate structural damages in the FE model. It is numerically shown that PSO and ACO algorithms successfully completed the optimization process of model updating in locating unknown damages in a truss structure.
