In this study, 3-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was induced to simulate air flow and particle motion in the axial flow cyclone separator. The commercialized CFD code FLUENT was used to visualize pressure drop and particle collection efficiency inside the cyclone. We simulated 4 cyclone models with different shape of vane, such as turning angle or shape of cross section. For the air flow simulation, we calculated the flow field using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence viscous model. Each model was simulated with different inlet or outlet boundary conditions. Our major concern for the flow filed simulation was pressure drop across the cyclone. For the particle trajectory simulation, we adopted Euler-Lagrangian approach to track particle motion from inlet to outlet of the cyclone. Particle collection efficiencies of various conditions are calculated by number based collection efficiency. The result showed that the rotation angle of the vane plays major roll to the pressure drop. But the smaller rotation angle of vane causes particle collection efficiency difference with different inlet position.

Charged and uncharged particle motions and collection characteristics around a bipolar charged rectangular shape electret fiber are studied numerically. Particle inertia, fluid drag, Coulomb force and polarization force are considered to predict the particle motion around the electret fiber. The effects of particle sizes, flow velocities, number of charges and polarities are also systematically investigated. For small size particles, the single fiber collection efficiency is greatly dependent on the charge polarity and the number of charges on a particle. However, particles larger than 5.mu.m do not show charging effect on collection efficiencies in the flow velocity ranges from 1.5 cm/s to 150 cm/s when the maximum charges are within +5 to -10. The results show that a strong electric field gradient at the corner of the bipolar charged fiber plays a very important role on collecting particles regardless of its charge polarity because of the polarization force. It also shows that the most penetrating particle size for a single electret fiber decreases as the flow velocity increases and the number of charges of a particle decreases.
This paper presents simulation results of particle transport in low-pressure, low-temperature plasma environment. The size dependent transport of particles in the plasma is investigated with a two-dimensional simulation tool developed in-house for plasma chamber analysis and design. The plasma model consists of the first two and three moments of the Boltzmann equation for ion and electron fluids respectively, coupled to Poisson's equation for the self-consistent electric field. The particle transport model takes into account all important factors, such as gravitational, electrostatic, ion drag, neutral drag and Brownian forces, affecting the motion of particles in the plasma environment. The particle transport model coupled with both neutral fluid and plasma models is simulated through a Lagrangian approach tracking the individual trajectory of each particle by taking a force balance on the particle. The size dependant trap locations of particles ranging from a few nm to a few ${\mu}m$ are identified in both electropositive and electronegative plasmas. The simulation results show that particles are trapped at locations where the forces acting on them balance. While fine particles tend to be trapped in the bulk, large particles accumulate near bottom sheath boundaries and around material interfaces, such as wafer and electrode edges where a sudden change in electric field occurs. Overall, small particles form a "dome" shape around the center of the plasma reactor and are also trapped in a "ring" near the radial sheath boundaries, while larger particles accumulate only in the "ring". These simulation results are qualitatively in good agreement with experimental observation.

Three-dimensional trajectory of fluid particle is simulated by a particle motion, which is able to examine the influences of changes in the several parameters. To calculate the trajectory of a particle, the Runge-Kutta method was utilized. The use of a projectile of particles for the trajectory of liquid jet has been shown to be useful to estimate the influence of different operating parameters such as best particle diameter, density of liquid body, initial take-off velocity, wind velocity, cross wind velocity, take-off angle, and base angle for a released flow from the nozzle. The results give the trajectories of various types of particle of body and at different elevations, base angles, wind velocities and densities of liquid body. The trajectories in a vacuum show that air resistances decreases both the distance and the maximum height of a projectile, and also explain that the termination time is also reduced in air. In addition, the maximum distance in the x direction was obtained with take-off angles from 30 degrees to 45 degrees in still air and the projectile of particles was highly effected by wind and cross wind. Clearly, a particle has to be so positioned as to take the optimum possible advantage of the wind if the maximum distances is requested. The wind astern increased the maximum distances of x direction compared with the wind ahead. Finally, it is possible to optimize the design of pump by using these results.
We present a new finite-element scheme for direct numerical simulation of particle suspensions in simple shear flow of a viscoelastic fluid in 3D. The sliding tri-periodic representative cell concept has been combined with DEVSS/DG finite element scheme by introducing constraint equations along the domain boundary. Rigid body motion of the freely suspended particle is described by the rigid-shell description and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers on particle boundaries. We present the bulk rheology of suspensions through the numerical examples of single-, two- and many-particle problems, which represent a large number of such systems in simple shear flow. We report the steady bulk viscosity and the first normal stress coefficient, which show shear-thickening behavior for both properties.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.
Numerical simulations are carried out for the fluid flow and particle transport around two nearby circular cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement. The present study aims to understand the effects of the particle Stokes number and the spacing between two cylinders on particle dispersion and deposition characteristics. Simulations are based on an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach where the motion of particles is calculated by a Lagrangian approach based on one-way coupling. Results show that the flow structure is very different depending on the cylinder spacing, eventually affecting the overall pattern of particle dispersion significantly. It is also found that particles with smaller Stokes number tend to be distributed more uniformly in the wake of two cylinders, being located even inside the vortex cores. Meanwhile, particle deposition is analyzed in terms of the deposition efficiency and deposition location. The deposition efficiency of particles strongly depends on the Stokes number, whereas it is slightly affected by the cylinder spacing. The deposition location gets wider as the Stokes number increases, and it becomes asymmetric about the center of each cylinder as the cylinders get close.

Effects of porous wind fences on the wind erosion of particles from a triangular sand pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Flow visualization was carried out to investigate the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the particle size, fence porosity $\varepsilon$ and the height of sand pile. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity $\varepsilon$=30% was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles. With increasing the sand particle diamter, the threshold velocity was also increased. When the height of sand pile is lower than the fence height, threshold velocity is enhanced.

A particle method recognized as one of gridless methods has been developed to investigate the nonlinear free-surface motions interacting to the structures. The method is more feasible and effective than convectional grid methods in order to solve the flow field with complicated boundary shapes. In the present study, breaking waves with a floating body are simulated to investigate fluid-structure interactions in the coastal zone.
In the present study, a numerical analysis on electrohydrodynamics (EHD) of the flow and the collection mechanisms inside a electrostatic precipitator with a spiral spike electrode were investigated. The phenomena of the electrostatic precipitator include complex interactions between the electric field, the fluid flow and the particle motion. To validate the numerical method, the numerical computation for the electric field of a simple wire-pipe type electrostatic system having an analytic solution were performed. Using this numerical method, the electric field of the spiked electrostatic precipitator was simulated. And the fluid flow and the particle motion inside the spiked electrostatic precipitator were numerically analyzed.
