  • The evaporation of sludge particles in a sludge dryer has been numerically investigated with commercial CFX4.1 code. Gas flow field, gas temperature field, sludge particle trajectories, and the moisture content variation of sludge particles are calculated fort various influencing factors, i. e., gas swirl velocity, initial particle distribution, gas temperature. Evaporation of sludge particles increases with gas swirl velocity, several supplying positions, and gas temperature, respectively due to increased residence time, increased contacting surface area, and increased temperature difference between gas and particle.

  • The centrifugal oil purifier is used in an engine for lubrication and to remove impurities. The momentum needed for the rotation of the cylindrical chamber is obtained by jet injections. An impure particle in the oil is separated by the centrifugal forces moving to the inner wall of the rotating cylindrical chamber body. The dust particles are eliminated when the particles are absorbed onto the surface of the inner wall of the chamber body. The flow characteristics and the physical behaviors of particles in this centrifugal oil purifier were investigated numerically and the filtration efficiencies was evaluated. For calculations, a commercial code is used and the SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model has been adopted. The MFR (Multi Frames of Reference) method is introduced to consider the rotating effect of the flows. Under various variables, such as particle size, particle density and rotating speed, the filtration efficiencies are evaluated. It has been verified that the filtration efficiency is increased with the increments in the particle size, the particle density and the rotating speed of the cylindrical chamber.

  • Shock waves are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. In particular, shocks formed by merger of subclumps, infall of matter and internal flow motion in intracluster media (ICMs) and cluster outskirts are relatively weak with Mach number M ${\lesssim}$ a few. At such weak shocks, it has been believed that the diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of cosmic rays is rather inefficient. Yet, the presence of nonthermal phenomena, such as radio halos and relics, suggests that contrary to the expectation, DSA as well as magnetic field amplification should operate at weak shocks in cluster environments. We recently initiated a study of weak, collisionless, astrophysical shocks using a PIC(Particle-in-Cell) code. The PIC code describes the motion of electron and ion particles under the electromagnetic field which is represented in grid zones. Here, we present a preliminary work of one-dimensional simulations. We show how shocks are set up as the turbulent electromagnetic field is developed in the shock transition layer, and discuss the implication on DSA and magnetic field amplification.

  • In this study, the characteristics of turbulent flow and collection efficiency for an one-stage electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with slit type collecting electrode for urban railway underground tunnels were obtained using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial code FLUENT 6.3 and lab-scale experiments. The electrostatic precipitator was operated under high gas velocity(3~12m/s). Five different designs of collecting electrode, flat plate-type and a slit-type of 3mm, 5mm, 7mm and 10mm slit width and four various gas velocity(3, 6, 9, and 12m/s) were used and applied. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model in CFD commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for flow simulation. The flow simulation results showed that the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was higher than slit-type under all gas velocity conditions and also the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was increased continuously, but in case of slit-type was maintained at constant range. And, the turbulent intensity was decreased according to increasing of slit width. The experimental results showed that the collection efficiency of slit-type was higher than flat plate-type under all gas velocity conditions. And, over 6m/s gas velocity condition, the collection efficiency of 5mm and 7mm was highest, when compared to 3mm and 10mm.

  • Rock and discontinuities are main factors consisting of a rock mass and the physical properties of each factor have direct effects on the mechanical stability of artificial structures in the rock mass. Because physical properties of the rock and discontinuities change a lot according to the size of test materials, a close attention is needed when the physical properties, obtained from laboratory tests, are used for the design of field structures. In this study, change of physical properties of intact materials due to the change of their size are studied. Six kinds of artificial materials including crystal, instead of an intact rock, are adopted for the study to guarantee the homogeneity of specimen materials even with relatively large size. Uniaxial strength and Young's modulus of each artificial material are checked out for a size effect and compared with the predicted values by Buckingham's theorem - dimensional analysis. A numerical analysis using PFC (Particle Flow Code) is also applied and primary factors influencing on the size effect are investigated.

  • Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.

  • The turbulent flow characteristics in the channel flow are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES) of FDS code, built in NIST(USA), in which the near-wall flow is solved by Werner-Wengle wall function. The periodic flow condition is applied in streamwise direction to get the fully developed turbulent flow and symmetric condition is applied in lateral direction. The height of the channel is H=1m, and the length of the channel is 6H, and the lateral length is H. The total grid is $32{\times}32{\times}32$ and $y^+$ is kept above 11 to fulfill the near-wall flow requirement. The Smagorinsky model is used to solve the sub-grid scale stress. Smagorinsky constant $C_s$ is 0.2(default in FDS). Three cases of Reynolds number(10,700, 26,000, 49,000.), based on the channel height, are analyzed. The simulated results are compared with direct numerical simulation(DNS) and particle image velocimetry(PIV) experimental data. The linear low-Re eddy viscosity model of Launder & Sharma and non-linear low-Re eddy viscosity model of Abe-Jang-Leschziner are utilized to compare the results with LES of FDS. Reynolds normal stresses, Reynolds shear stresses, turbulent kinetic energys and mean velocity flows are well compared with DNS and PIV data.

  • HVOF thermal spray guns are now being widely used to produce protective coatings, on the surfaces of engineering components. HVOF technology employs a combustion process to heat the gas flow and melt the coating materials which are particles of metals, alloys or cermets. Particle flow which is accelerated to high velocities and combustion gas stream are deposited on a substrate. In order to obtain good quality coatings, the analysis of torch design must be performed. The reason is that the design parameters of torch influence gas dynamic behaviors. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to predict the gas dynamic behaviors in a HVOF thermal spray gun with various torch shapes. The CFD model is used to deduce the effect of changes in nozzle geometry on gas dynamics. Using a commercial code, FLUENT which uses Finite Volume Method and SIMPLE algorithm, governing equations have been solved for the pressure, velocity and temperature distributions in the HVOF thermal spray torch.
