  • $Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate composites were fabircated by pressureless sintering. The dispersed phase was SiC of which the content was varied from 1.0 to 10 vol%. Three SiC powders having different median diameters from 0.28 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were used. The microstructure became finer and more uniform as the SiC content increased except the 10 vol% specimens, which were sintered at a higher temperature. Under the same sintering condition, densification as well as grain growth was retarded more severly when the SiC content was higher or the SiC particle size was smaller. The highest flexural strength obtained at 5.0 vol% SiC regardless of the SiC particle size seemed to be owing to the finer and more uniform microstructures of the specimens. Annealing of the specimens at $1300^{\circ}C$ improved the strength in general and this annealing effect was good for the specimens containing as low as 1.0 vol% of SiC. Fracture toughness did not change appreciably with the SiC content but, for the composites containing 10 vol% SiC, a significantly higher toughness was obtained with the specimen containing 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ SiC particles.

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of $Cu-TiB_2$ composites prepared by hot extrusion and cold drawing according to the variation of $TiB_2$ contents and the size of $TiB_2$ particle have been studied. The experimental results showed that the electrical conductivity was decreased with increasing the $TiB_2$ content, and their tensile strength and hardness increased inversely. In the case of the same content of $TiB_2$ particle, the smaller $TiB_2$ particle, the higher their mechanical properties. The electrical conductivity of $Cu-TiB_2$ composites showed more than 70%IACS. Their yield strength and hardness were more than 120 MPa and HRB 60~70, respectively.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of the moisture, volatile matter and particle size in the coal on the pulverized coal combustion characteristics using CFD. The results show that as the moisture content in coal increases, flame temperature decreases because of heat loss driven from latent heat of vaporization and reduction of heating value. As the volatile matter content in the coal increases, the temperature in the region near the burner increases, while the temperature in rear region of boiler decreases. The solution to keep the temperature in the rear region of boiler is suggested that particle size is needed to be larger. As the particle size increases, the temperature in the rear region of boiler show tendency to increase, for combustion burning time of coal could be extended.

  • The study investigated the effect of rice particle size on the physicochemical properties of soybean porridge prepared at different pH. Redness, yellowness and viscosity of soybean porridge increased according to the rice particle size. Protein content of soybean porridge was increased 2-fold, compared to that of rice porridges. Total amino acid content of soybean porridge was 1,821.2 mg/100 g and that of rice was 1,719.1 mg/100 g. Lysine and threonine contents of limited amino acid of soybean porridge were increased. Half grain rice soybean porridge exhibited the highest sensory scores. The results indicated that half grain size soybean porridge is preferred, both physicochemically and nutritionally.

  • Purpose: Physical properties of Detarium microcarpum seeds were investigated as a function of moisture content to explore the possibility of developing bulk handling and processing equipment. Methods: Seed size, surface area, and 1,000-seed weight were determined by measuring the three principal axes, measuring area on a graph paper, and counting and weighing seeds. Particle and bulk densities were determined using liquid displacement and weight in a measuring cylinder, respectively. Porosity was computed from particle and bulk densities. Roundness and sphericity were measured using shadowgraphs. Angle of repose and static and kinetic coefficients of friction were determined using the vertical cylindrical pipe method, an inclined plane, and a kinetic coefficient of friction apparatus. Results: In the moisture range of 8.2%-28.5% (db), the major, intermediate, and the minor axes increased from 2.95 to 3.21 cm, 1.85 to 2.61 cm, and 0.40 to 1.21 cm, respectively. Surface area, 1,000-seed weight, particle density, porosity, and angle of repose increased from 354.62 to $433.19cm^2$, 3.184 to 3.737 kg, 1060 to $1316kg/m^3$, and 30.0% to 53.1%, respectively, whereas bulk density decreased from 647.6 to $617.2kg/m^3$. Angle of repose increased from $13.9^{\circ}$ to $28.4^{\circ}$. Static and kinetic coefficients of friction varied between 0.096 and 0.638 on different structural surfaces. Conclusions: Arithmetic mean, geometric mean, and equivalent sphere effective diameters determined at the same moisture level were significantly different from each other, with the arithmetic mean diameter being greatest. Surface area, 1,000-seed weight, particle density, porosity, and angle of repose all increased linearly with moisture content. Bulk density decreased linearly with moisture content. The coefficients of friction had linear relationships with moisture content. The highest values of static and kinetic coefficients of friction were observed on galvanized steel and hessian fabric, respectively, whereas the lowest values were observed on fiberglass.

  • This study is about the mechanical properties of epoxy composite reinforced with nano $TiO_2$ particle. Tensile strength, fracture toughness, vicker's hardness and Izod Impact test were carried out to investigate the effect of particle size and content of $TiO_2$ on the mechanical properties of $TiO_2$/epoxy composites. The results showed that the strength of the $TiO_2$/epoxy composites were higher than that of the pure epoxy. The best improvement of tensile strength was achieved in case of the particle size was 21 nanometer and the content was 3 weight percent. However, the Izod Impact value and the Vicker's hardness of $TiO_2$/epoxy composites showed no clear tendency.

  • Dispersion behavior of the slurries consisted of bimodal-type AlN powders was examined in non-aqueous solvent system. Azotropic solvent system and copolymer acidic dispersant were applied to the slurries. Measurements of the sedimentation height and the viscosity of the each slurry, and the test of particle size distribution of the each powder sample were conducted as examinations for the dispersion behavior at the various dispersant contents. The bimodal-type particle size distribution was continued after addition of the dispersant and small particle portions were increased as the dispersant content increases. The density of the green sheet was also increased as the dispersant content increases and a green density of $2.114\;g/cm^3$ was obtained at the sample prepared from 2.4 wt% dispersant content. The increase of large particle portions resulted in the surface defects of the green sheets.

  • Wear particles of the model tread compounds for bus and truck tires were made using a laboratory abrasion tester and characterized based on their size distributions, shapes, and crosslink densities. The influence of the carbon black contents and rubber compositions (NR= 100 and NR/BR= 80/20) on the production of wear particles was investigated. The wear particles were separated according to size using a sieve shaker. The shape properties of the wear particles were analyzed using an image analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their shapes were observed as tiny stick cookies or sausages with bumpy surfaces. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing carbon black content. Moreover, the particle size distributions of the NR = 100 samples were larger than that of the NR/BR blend samples. There were different filaments in the wear particles. The filament diameters tended to be thinner with increasing carbon black content. The crosslink density increased with increasing carbon black content, and the crosslink densities of the NR= 100 samples were lower than those of the NR/BR blend ones. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing crosslink density. Based on the experimental results, the wear particles can be produced by detaching debris from the main body through repetitive strain and recovery.
