  • This paper is analyzed for DC-DC chopper performance of high efficiency added in electric isolation. The general converters of high efficiency are made that the power loss of the used switching devices is minimized. To achieve high efficiency system, the proposed chopper is constructed by using a partial resonant circuit. The control switches using in the chopper are operated with soft switching for a partial resonant method. The control switches are operated without increasing their voltage and current stresses by the soft switching technology. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of chopper is high. And the proposed chopper is added in a electric isolation. When the power conversion system is required to electric isolation, the proposed chopper is adopted with system development of high efficiency. The soft switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed chopper is verified by digital simulation and experimental results.

  • A photovoltaic (PV) system uses an AC module integrated converter (MIC) to operate PV cells at a maximum power point (MPP) and for high efficiency. The MPP of a PV cell varies depending on partial shading conditions, and loss occurs differently according to the configuration method of the PV-MIC. Therefore, this study compares the losses of passive components and power semiconductors according to the partial shading conditions of the PV module. Theoretical loss analysis is performed using parameters for the datasheet and PSIM simulation results. Analysis results verify that the one-stage PV-MIC demonstrates high efficiency.

  • In the buck-boost DC-DC converter which is used at a certain situation such as in factories where loads often change a lot, the switches in the device make big energy loss in operating at Buck-Boost Mode due to hard switching and are affected by lots of stresses which decrease the efficiency rate of the converter. In order to improve this problem, to decrease the loss of snubber and switching, it has been investigated that zero voltage switching mode and zero current switching mode which make the operation of switches with soft switching. For the more sophisticated and advanced device, this paper is presented the Partial Resonant Soft Switching Mode Power Converter which is adapted the power converter having the partial resonant soft switching mode, that makes switches operate when the resonant current or voltage becomes zero by making the resonant circuit partially at turning on and off of the switches with suitable layout of the resonant elements and switch elements in the converter. Also, this paper includes the analysis and simulation of the Partial Resonant type Buck-Boost Chopper.

  • Partial shading analysis of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) arrays has recently become a theoretically and numerically challenging issue, and it is necessary for PV system designers. The main contributions of this study are the following: 1) A PSIM-based macro-model was employed because it is remarkably fast, has high precision, and has no convergence issues. 2) Three types of equivalent macro-models were developed for the transformation of a small PV sub-array with uniform irradiance to a new macro-model. 3) On the basis of the proposed new macro-model, a tearing method was established, which can divide a large-scale PV array into several small sub-arrays to significantly improve the efficiency improvement of a simulation. 4) Three platforms, namely, PSIM, PSpice, and MATLAB, were applied to evaluate the proposed tearing method. The proposed models and methods were validated, and the value of this research was highlighted using an actual large-scale PV array with 2420 PV modules. Numerical simulation demonstrated that the tearing method can remarkably improve the simulation efficiency by approximately thousands of times, and the method obtained a precision of nearly 6.5%. It can provide a useful tool to design the optimal configuration of a PV array with a given shading pattern as much as possible.

  • In this study, we try to evaluate the efficiency of the photonics industry using a data envelopment analysis(DEA) model. We first develope four stage procedures for selecting proper input and output variables which consist of selecting the first candidate variables from literature survey, selecting the second candidate variables through experts' discussion, measuring the partial efficiency of the selected variables based on Tofallis' profiling, and clustering some variables through the rank correlation analysis of partial efficiency proposed by Min and Kim(l998). With this procedure, we select 4 input variables(capital, number of employee, R&D cost, operating cost) and 2 output variables(sales, growth of sales) and then utilize CCR and BCC model to measure efficiencies of 26 photonics companies in Gwangju. Moreover, we perform the reference group analysis to figure out what causes inefficiencies and to provide the desirable values for input and output variables at which inefficient photonics companies become efficient. Finally, we classify 26 photonics companies into three groups such as optical communications, optical applications, and optical sources, and perform the Kruskal-Wallis test to check if there exist some differences between efficiencies of three groups.

  • The organic Rankine cycle has been widely used to convert the renewable energy such as the solar energy, the geothermal energy, or the waste energy etc., to the electric power. Some previous studies focused to find what kind of refrigerant would be a best working fluid for the organic Rankine cycle. In this study, R245fa was chosen to the working fluid, and the cycle analysis was conducted for the output power of 30kW or less. In addition, properties (temperature, pressure, entropy, and enthalpy etc.) of the working fluid on the cycle were predicted when the turbine output power was controlled by adjusting the mass flowrate. The configuration of the turbine was a radial-type and the supersonic nozzles were applied as the stator. So, the turbine was operated in partial admission. The turbine efficiency and the optimum velocity ratio were considered in the cycle analysis for the low partial admission rate. The computed results show that the system efficiency is affected by the partial admission rate more than the temperature of the evaporator.

  • Very efficient 6-ary runlength-limited codes for a six-level optical recording channel are presented when d = 3. The 6-ary(3, 15) code of rate 6/7 is given achieving coding efficiency of 98.87%. The efficiency of rate 13/15, (3, 20) code is 99.95%, which approaches the Shannon capacity. To increase the accurary of reading 6-ary signal, partial response modes are also investigated.

  • Electrocatalytic reduction can produce useful chemicals and fuels such as carbon monoxide, methane, formate, aldehydes, and alcohols using carbon dioxide, the green house gas, as a reactant through the supply of electrical energy. In this study, tin-lead (Sn-Pb) alloy electrodes are fabricated by electrodeposition on a carbon paper with different alloy composition and used as cathode for electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into formate in an aqueous system. The prepared electrodes are measured by Faradaic efficiency and partial current density for formate production. Electrocatalytic reduction experiments are carried out at -1.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) using H-type cell under ambient temperature and pressure and the gas and liquid products are analyzed by gas chromatograph and liquid chromatograph, respectively. As results, the Sn-Pb electrodes show higher Faradaic efficiency and partial current density than the single metal electrode. The Sn-Pb alloy electrode which have Sn:Pb molar ratio=2:1, shows the highest Faradaic efficiency of 88.7%.

  • The number of vehicles applied diesel engine are rapidly rising for fuel economy. Accompanying this trend, application of an after-treatment system is strictly required as a result of reinforced emission regulation. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is considered as the most efficiency method to reduce particulate matter (PM) by car makers but also in retrofit market. In recently, various kinds of partial flow DPF are widely used for proper filtration performance and reducing of pressure drop but it is difficult to define the characteristics of these filters because the filtration mechanism is obscure according to the status of these systems. In this paper we investigated the characteristics of cell open type DPF according to the status of filter especially, PM loading. The PM loading mass in the p-DPF are predicted from increase of differential pressure of DPF and the trend of filtration efficiency so that we can measure filtration efficiency and Balance Point Temperature (BPT) of this p-DPF according to PM loading.
